When did Spiderman get so strong?

The above old 70-80s newspaper comic, written by Stan Lee himself, gave some idea of Spiderman's strength level. He was... okay, just street level. He cannot flip tanks. Kingpin and Daredevil can give him trouble. This is the Spiderman I remembered as a kid. So the question... when did Spiderman get so strong until he could throw buildings and stop trains?

(repost from Civil War topic)

Comic book powers are inconsistent and can vary depending on the needs of the story. That's really about it.

Spider-Man has shown remarkable feats of strength well beyond the example you posted for long enough that it's pretty much accepted by writers and fans that he's one of the strongest around.

He always had super strength... it just increased over the years. Some say it's from years of web-swingimg, but I think that's partially a joke lol.

Inuniverse reason why is he just gotten stronger as he finished growing.

People really didn't know Spiderman was strong as fuck?

News strip Spidey has always been kind of worthless and inconsistent power wise. Makes it easier to write cliffhangers I guess. Guy constantly gets knocked out by nobodies.

Supposedly he contains his strength somewhat sub consciously.

He got progressively stronger as he aged.

He was always, he just holds back to not hurt people.

Dont anger him, he will go nuts.

These basically. He was a teenager when he got bit and continued getting stronger as he aged. Plus he is always holding back his strength to avoid collateral damage or hurting enemies too much, so you rarely ever see how powerful Peter ACTUALLY is.

FWIW he is probably #3 in the MCU behind only Hulk and Thor.

Peter is crazy strong but he's not proportionally durable. That's why upper end strength human blows can hurt him. He also has a healing factor but it's much slower than someone like Wolverine or Hulk.

He also only needs 40 minutes of sleep a night, the lucky SOB.

He's super strong because spiders are super strong. They can jump like 50x their own body length and carry like 170 times their own weight without falling off a wall or anything. Proportionally that makes him pretty damn strong.

I remember one of the old Marvel trading cards from the early 90s say he can lift up to like 10 tons or something like that

Yeah I used to have those. It was a number of cards detailing his powers if I remember correctly. He was lifting a car on the Spider Strength card I think.

Edit: I was way off. Here is the card.

Spider-Man has always been that strong he just hold his strength back and only unleash his full strength when he needs to, usually when the situation is dire.

Heck Ock/Superior Spider-Man was caught off guard by Parker's strength when he punched someone hard.

Dude stopped a runaway train, the organic webs is worse than that

Oh yeah, I hated the organic webs. Completely misses the point of Peter being a gifted genus.

Yeah, but nobody seems to remember and they never attempted to show his strengh when I recall correctly. Didnt he struggle with a car in the ASM movies?

The only time they showed his strength was in Spider-Man 2 with the train scene, though ruined as Spider-Man had his mask off, and when he stopped a building from collapsing on Mary Jane.

There's also the sky rail in Spider-Man 1.

insects and arachnids are generally strong when you apply square cube law

where is my centipede-themed hero, comic books and kamen rider?

Doesn't he also get strong as fuck when he's angry? Who said 'don't piss him off?'
He doesnt get stronger, he just doesnt play safe anymore and breaks the bones of his foes for example.

Slayven, please post that one pagewhere he electrocuted the Sinister Six in Orgin of the Species.

He easily is. MCU doesnt have that many people around who could compete, everyone uses Gimmicks.

I had some books from the old marvel pen and paper RPG that also had him in the 10 ton range. This had to be in the 80s or so?

Raimi's Spiderman had me going: WTF no way he can lift a cable car with one arm or stop a fast big train.

His movies were the reason I went to wiki the character to see how strong he was.

Nah, he lifted a car with ease. Also stopped a runaway bus. They've just never done anything where they're like "goddamn! Spider-man is fucking STRONK"

Spider-man has always been super strong.
And super-fast
And super smart.
And has a inbuild danger warning sense.

Spider-man is pretty OP.

he stopped a whole train in spiderman 2.

people just forget because he's not really fighting anybody who is shown to have incredible physical strength.

The longer a superhero is around, the more bullshit they end up pulling. Once he's lifted a train, cars aren't impressive anymore. Escalation is the norm.

Same way Batman is essentially omniscient and Superman started dragging planets around on a chain. Too much one-upmanship.

Spider-Man is a street level character but not his powers.

Most of these scenes where it shows his unbelievable power is due to Spider-Man being in a tough spot and getting a sort of adrenalin rush overcoming the hurdle.
There aren't that many situations (at least up to the 90's comics) where he can show his raw strength though.

he stopped a whole train in spiderman 2.

What I mean is a feat of strength where the strength is the emphasis, like Hulk punching the chitauri worm or Steve punching through a window of a submerged submarine or Iron Man's tank missile in IM 1.

Closest thing I can think of is him catching a cop car on his back in ASM2 and casually flipping it off. His strength is most often portrayed while he's at a disadvantage, like the train scene or holding the cable cars.

Peter felt weak as fuck in ASM1.

He lifts that big thing in the back. In the 1960s.

Yeah, and it takes him half the book. It's a total "holy shit, breaking through the ceiling of his potential by sheer will" moment.

There's a difference between that sort of story angle and the "he can do it whenever he wants, he just holds back because he's such a nice dude" angle.
