When do you think we'll start seeing next-gen handhelds?

I just realized that it's been a little over three years since the DS and PSP launched. By this time in the GBA's life (which would be around mid-2004), the DS and PSP had been announced, displayed at E3, and were set to release in the next few months (though the PSP would be pushed back a bit for all but Japan). But now, there hasn't really been any talk about the next generation of handhelds.

I guess neither Sony or Nintendo really have all that much incentive to push a new handheld out the door. Sony's probably not eager to launch another system at the moment, what with their problems on the console side of things. On top of that, the PSP is still more expensive than the DS, and any upgrades a PSP2 might have would only make it more expensive. And I think that, with the PSP not taking off as they'd hoped and their problems with the PS3, they've realized that pricing is an important part of a system's success. And the PSP seems to be seeing some more interest with the recent price drops and bundles.

As for Nintendo, I think they're perfectly happy with the DS dominating the world right now.

I think the GBA's life was kinda cut off abruptly. Sony announced the PSP to combat the GBA, so Nintendo had to hurry and get the DS out there earlier than they were planning. Unless Microsoft announces a handheld, I don't think that'll happen again this gen. I think we still have at least two years of life left in the DS and PSP.

I expect we'll first see the DS2 and PSP2 in early 2010, and they'll launch later that year.

Nintendo's will probably be roughly the PSP's power, and they'll probably keep the two screens and touch screen and DS brand, and probably add some new little unexpected thing. I'm still hoping it'll be Gamecube-powered and play Gamecube games, but I think that's very unlikely. They'll probably stick to flash cartridge things for games, probably the same shape and size, too, so they can have DS backwards compatibility. And speaking of which, I think it's likely there won't be any GBA compatibility.

The PSP2 will probably make less of a leap in power, something more like the Gamecube to Wii, if even that. I expect they'll have a second analog nub as well... but then, I also expected they'd fix the PSP's nub when they redesigned the system, and they didn't, so who knows? It'll probably still use UMDs and be backwards compatible with PSP games, and have a bit of built-in storage. And I don't know about dual screens, but I'll be pretty surprised if it doesn't have a touch screen.

Personally, I'd be perfectly happy if we didn't get new handhelds until 2012. The ones that are out now are perfectly fine machines that complement each other nicely, and I think there's still a lot of life left in them. Besides, I've had a DS since launch and I just got a PSP, and it's really nice to be able to look at future handheld releases and know that I'll be able to play all of them regardless of the system it's on. I don't want to have to go through the whole, "Dammit, I wish I could afford both," thing again.

Hopefully not for a long time. Both of the current handheld consoles look to have a long life ahead of them, and plenty of top-tier titles to look forward to.

Before they release NEW hardware, I think both sony and nintendo will release a smaller/better version of current hardware once again.

The DS is still being sold with every new born baby in Japan, and if I remember correctly, wasn't Nintendo of Japan mad at Reggie when the GBA continued to do well, because he wasn't pushing the DS hard enough or something? So, if they follow that, it will be a while before we something completely new from them (they could might maybe possibly do another redesign?)

As for Sony, the PSP has just started to really pick up in Japan, so I don't think they want to lose that just yet. Maybe next year we'll start to see some rumours, and the following year some announcements.

It would be interesting if the next PSP is the first download-only gaming platform.

Judging from my PSP owning friends; and software sales in general, an astronomical amount of owners don't buy physical copies of games, and this could be a solution.

I think Sony and Nintendo will each get one more major revision of the current hardware out (like a new iteration of the Lite or Slim) before we start hearing rumbles of new stuff.

I am not so sure Sony themselves care so much about the piracy. I mean, they have to update the firmware and fix holes in order to please software developers, but look at it this way: PSP piracy becoming huge has FINALLY made their memory stick format popular. They have been trying to get that format to take off for years, and this is what it took. But boy did it take. Sometimes I can't even find memory sticks in stock anymore.

So what make you think they're willing to pay for downloaded copies?

Eh, well, I think this year we'll start hearing about some rumblings of the next iterations in each respective line. I don't know what the status of E3 or any conventions are this year, so I wouldn't know WHEN this would happen.

I'm saying mid 08.

Next-handheld-gen announcements late '09, at the absolute earliest.

Sounds reasonable. I think we'll see some hints in '09 at least. A year is a long time, so it's hard to say how the DS will be doing at the end of this year, compared to last. Though it certainly looks like it'll be going strong, with DQ9 coming (and possibly, maybe, another restyle).

Of course, the GBA was alive and kicking when the DS was announced, but as said by the OP, that was different due to the 'threat' of the PSP.

Didn't the original GameBoy stay around for something like 10 years before Gameboy Advance? I bet we'll see a lifespan like that. The DS is the best selling console in the world right now. Nintendo is not going to move on anytime soon.

No need at all because these two machine are still

Both handhelds have strong momentum. I don't think we'll even see concept stuff for at least 2-3 more years.
LETS HOPE SO

(i've a brand new polar white DS and don't want it to get older! :D )

I can conceivably see announcements from both companies sometime next year (2009) and the machines possibly being released in 2010.

I can also see Nintendo doing another redesign of the DS this year, not as sure about the PSP.

I dont think PSP is going anywhere, I think DS might get another hardware change.

Personally, I would want Nintendo to show off a new handheld this year (almost forgot it was 2008). I just hope that they dont do 2 screens anymore, I would much rather have one large touch screen, the only problem with that is people would be wanting BC with the DS. I cant really think of a single game where having two screens was part of the appeal past puzzle gimmicks and the few FPS games.

I still think Sony is going for another medium format or another variation of the UMD. They're not stupid to shut off countless PSP games and go dl only.

Itunes works doesn't it?

It would make the games cheaper, and sony might be able to increase anti-piracy measurements by registration procedures.

I don't see any reason to change from UMD, unless they wanted to go with some mini-Blu-Ray UMD equivalent, but that would probably increase the cost of the system a lot.

Yes.
We will see a generational shift when the market for the current generation has been saturated, i.e. hardware sales drop sharply and software sales start to slow down.
This isn't going to happen, for the DS at least, before 2009. At the earliest. Its software lineup is stronger than ever now and sales remain absolutely rampant in all territories. It is possible that 2008 (the next holiday season to be exact) will mark the peak of the DS's success, and things will slow down 2009. It is not likely though.

I would predict hearing about one of the new home consoles before hearing about one of the next handhelds from either Sony or Nintendo. The DS is absolutely on fire and poised to be the greatest selling gaming unit of all time. The PSP's sales have leaped frogged previous years and its sales have finally hit their stride.

Like others have said, unless a newcomer to the handheld market announces something, I think it will be a while before we see something from Nintendo or Sony.

I hope we don't see a new handheld generation for at least 2 more years. I love my DS and PSP and the software is only getting better at this point in time.
