Where do you see Square Enix next-gen?

The fact that demo was so good-looking pretty much tells you we're going to get cinematic streamlined experiences from them and I'm not okay with it. There was a time when I was joking about Square's future being Advent Children: The Game (a la Dragon's Lair style). Damn.

HD towns are definitely possible!

Clearly from the Luminous Engine demo they have some heavy talent. Square's position next-gen is all dependent on management. I can see Square drifting and squandering whatever resources they have left. Or, they can be pushed and push back with some crazy next gen Final Fantasy 7 style old school RPG and rise like the Phoenix from the ashes. It's up to them.

I see a sea of Eidos console releases, a bunch of games from Western devs like Avalanche and United Action Front via their Square Enix London studio, and a bunch of mobile and handheld games from Japan.

I also see like 2-3 Japanese consoles games within 4-5 years of the start of the generation.

Pretty much this. They've already said the first game using Luminous won't be out for around 3+ years.

What do you think of Versus/XIV 2.0/Potential XIII-3? Do you think these will be released in a fashion to bridge the gap between the end of this gen and the start of the next?

Yes. XIV 2.0 is already confirmed for next year. I think Versus will come at the end of it right before PS4 launch.

At this point, every mention of vXIII's release date seems like a joke (100 years from now!) or too reasonable and therefore too optimistic (at the end of this gen).

I hope they'll still take some chances with games like The Last Remnant and NIER... S-E did come out with some great games earlier this gen.

I would say its a bit of both I guess. probably Eidos was already on the right path but SE gave them the opportunity.

But yea, I think it was SE benefiting more from this deal.

I think Eidos even existing right now under a company that's not trying to drastically change them is a bigger benefit for them than SE. lol

We're going to see in just a few more weeks if they actually screwed the pooch on one of the most sure-fire franchises in all of video gaming or if they just fucked it up in Japan.

As for actual speculation, I think they are going to double down on F2P sometime this gen and have it pay off big. They have the right franchises for it, they just need the right game.

More or less the same position they are in now, with a chance that their Japanese studios will become more efficient and expedient. I don't think they will be going away or anything. Also I figure FF Versus XIII will be out early 2014.

Squeenix (japanese part at least) will be even more irrelevant next gen than this, the western side will tick over and maybe cover its ass tho

Ideally, they'd sell off Eidos and use that money to restructure and expand their Japanese studios... then go back to resurrecting the classics - new Chrono Trigger, new Mana, new SaGa, and an offline DQ in the spirit of 8.

I mean, no offense to Eidos since they make (some) solid games but they just don't really seem to fit the S-E "profile".

Why do you want SE to die?

Nothing I want. Not really interested in the Eidos side of things. Versus is never going to get released nor is Kingdom Hearts 3. They can't even get out HD collections of FF and KH, when smaller companies get out HD collection of games fast. I will laugh if it takes 2-3 years to get Final Fantasy X HD out, already been one.

Hopefully a lot better. Being on the front foot with one of the first next gen engines makes you think they have learned. In the end they are too big not to get their shit together eventually... right?

Square-Enix is the saddest casualty of the HD Generation, IMO. Square used to have is great mystique about them, that has completely evaporated. I blame that mostly on poor management and a toxic reliance on IP that has severely fatigued their brands.

I'm hoping if they standardize on Luminous, they can recapture some of their old spark, improve dev cycles, develop new IP and reinvigorate their existing ones. Sadly, I think many here are spot on - Edios console games and iOS/handheld from Japan.

Honestly, i wish SE would give up on their MMO ambitions already. While i believe that creative implementation of online/social elements (e.g. Demon's Souls) is a critical next step for the FF franchise, the MMO model is simply not the way. I'm rooting for FFXIV to pull through, but i still think that a traditional MMO does not play to their strengths.

Strangely, i'm totally fine with this.

I agree with this.

Remember the days of Einhander, Brave Fencer Musashi, Bushido Fucking Blade and Xenogears?

What happened to you Square? What happened?

Depends on whether they understand that FFXII was the last good FF game.

In the short term, they should cash in by using their new engine for FFVII and FFXII remakes.

Nomura no longer makes games, opens up a square enix clothing line.
It'll be even better if they add the Bleach mangaka to the fashion brand.

If SE Japan is unable to output like they did in the past, they're going to be primarily developing mobile and social games, I think. That would be unfortunate, but it's better than death.

While I agree that at the moment EIDOS is the good part of Square Enix, I wonder how it goes on the financial side.
Are EIDOS games doing fine enough, sales-wise, for Square Enix?

If it's S-E in name only, then it's pretty much the same thing as it being dead.

Their Eidos studios are embodying the old SE in a way that SE Japan currently doesn't - they are making critically-acclaimed, story-focused single player games with excellent production values.

In a way, the old SE is now their western studios, and their Japanese studios are relics of the past that are merely struggling to keep up.

Games like Arkham Asylum and Deus Ex basically carried the whole company behind their backs.

Hopefully the Luminous Engine is not vaporware and we actually see games with the level of fidelity shown in the demo... (Project Offset & RTE1080-engine comes to mind...)
Actually if they even come close to the visuals shown in the demo they would be on a good path.
Considering SE does great CG work it would be incredible to see them leverage this talent during real-time game play.

Considering the long wait for Versus I would not mind if they move the game to the new engine and give it another 2 to 3 years of development for the next-gen platforms. This could slate the game for a late 2014 release once the next-gen consoles have a year on the market. I'm not sure if releasing Versus as a PS3 exclusive in 2013 would be a good move.

At this point I wonder if versus is going to be released period...

Just hope that the titles of their games aren't ridonkeylous and that they've thrown out whichever random title generator that they're currently using.

And you don't think that the Eidos part will help them in the long run? People from Crystal Dynamics were involved in the Luminous tech demo and I think (read: hope) the western efforts will put a bit of pressure on the Japanese side to deliver games on the same quality level.

I think they will ship something earlier this time. They can't afford to have games in the pipeline for so long

Don't think I didn't catch your pre-edit ಠ_ಠ

Why's that? Their portable output have been great so far. And I mean REALLY great. They just had problems on HD console like every any japanese developer in this gen. They're now working on that.

I honestly think from an in house development standpoint they need to scale back the "production value" of the games.

They need to try to make a smaller, tighter experience that is very focused in vision.

They need to figure out what makes games fun again...and not for anybody else...for themselves

</see souls series....not that SE needs to make a Souls game>

I just watched the Agnis Philosophy tech demo.

Square-enix is finished lol. It's like HEY WE WANT TO WESTERNIZE OUR GAMES, SO LET'S PUT AK47s ON EVERYBODY'S HANDS.

Terrible, just terrible. And people buy that shit :P

I lol'd, on the youtube video there were several posts saying "why can't the next FF be like this?". No. Just, no. No!!!

Cause Final Fantasy games have never featured guns?

Here's my fool-proof plan to save SE next gen:

1. announce a game
2. release said game in a timely manner
3. ????
4. profit

I just hope it happens.
