Where Does David Jaffe Rank Among Game Designers?

You can also take this question to be how does David Jaffe compare to other game designers? Or how will David Jaffe be viewed years from now? So if you don't like the word rank, please no shrieking. In addition please leave the legends (Miyamoto, Wright, etc.) out of this dicussion as that just tends to shit up the thread. Compare to contemporaries like Ueda, Koizumi, Bioware doctors. He is most famous for being the creator of the God of War series, one of the highest rated gaming series of all time. I guess you could say he perfected that kind of action game, though I would like to know what Cory Barlog's contribution was. I'm not a huge fan of the Twisted Metal series but I did enjoy what I played of it. He also apparently made a Mickey Mouse game. He has gotten some praise and a lot of backlash for being very opinionated. What say you GAF?

lol.

Mikamiyagaki laughs at this.

I'm looking forward to the new Twisted Metal, but asides from that... no idea where he'd go. Maybe in the middle of an impractically long list.

#2, right after Kazunori Yamauchi.

edit: Not for real, but I admire his honesty and openness towards his fans.

Why does he have to be singled out and ranked? He is recognized and appreciated for the projects he worked on. That should be enough.

Jaffe has made some good games, but people love giving him more credit than he deserves.

No one will care about Jaffe even close to as how people remember and talk about Wright and Miyamoto. Not even in the same stratosphere.

I've got a lot of respect for the guy. He manages to pull of 'always swearing like a sailor' and 'seeming like an incredibly nice guy' at the same time. That is a rare feat.

Yeah I agree with this.

GoW1 was good, GoW2 was hugely superior though. Twisted Metal was a great early example of 3D gaming and holds up better than a lot of games of the era.

He is definitely one of my fave developers and it's fun to watch his interviews. But I don't think he has made enough games to rank him high amongst Miyamoto and etc. Out of all the games he made I could only think of Twisted Metal 1, 2 and Black and God of War that I enjoyed. Though making God of War is a huge accomplishment and Twisted Metal doesn't get enough credit. I just can't wait for Twisted Metal for PS3, it is my most anticipated game for PS3.

I like God of War, but I'm not really a fan of his other games. He's good at what he does though, I guess.

And fuck the ridiculous difficulty of the PS1 version of Mickey Mania, David :(

God of War 2 is easily in the running for best PS2 game and best game of that generation. So much intensity! Even the story which would normally be considered lame, was compelling in the context of the game.

Found the list:

Jaffe's work is good but will be forgotten in the grand scope of things, luminaries like Wright and Miyamoto's have influence that have shaped the games industry.

He made Mickey Mania? Damn, that puts him up a spot or 2 in my book

I'm not sure. I'm sure he's a solid developer, but I myself am not drawn to his games. God if War is hardly noteworthy if you ask me. Solid maybe, but nothing special. And Twisted Metal is nothing to me. Nothing in his games scream personality or uniqueness. They are just ok games.

He's one of my favorites because he shares the same views as me when it comes to multiplayer games and online gaming in general. Less COD (spawn, take 2 steps, shoot, die, respawn) and more like Uncharted 2 beta (more health, more time to develop player-to-player relationships, having to 2nd and 3rd guess what you should do in any situation, etc). He explains my views on this perfectly so I respect him for that.

God of War was a solid action game, but nothing spectacular--more impressive for what they managed to pull out of an aging PS2 system, imo.

Twisted Metal is just gold, though. I've nothing but love for those games.

He's no Kamiya. Hell, I'd even rank him lower than Itagaki if we're purely talking about action games.

It's kinda strange, the Twisted Metal franchise seems to be absolutely loved in the US, while the rest of the world just doesn't give a fuck about it. Always surprised me how much love US gamers have for the franchise.

Just playing with friends, blowing shit up, hilariously awesome characters... so good.

It's fun.
When done right, so Twisted Metal 2; all the others can go to hell.

He created God of War, I love the GoW games. For laying the foundation for the franchise I'd rank him among one of my favorite designers. :)

They might be fun (I only played a demo of one of the PS1 games and thought it was meh), my comment was more about how the franchise seems to be loved in the US, while the rest of the world seems to ignore it (well, I could see why Japan would ignore it though, but why does it get so much more love from the US than from Europe?)

Well I probably just missed the boat on those. I only had an N64 during those days.
Think of it as a more mature Mario Kart with less focus on racing and more focus on violence and it had a darker tone.

Speaking as an American, I don't understand it either.

Oh I know what they are. I've played the PSP game, 1, and Black on the PS2.

Who knows.

Maybe it's something ingrained in the culture. I thought Twisted Metal and Destruction Derby on PS were hideous white trash abominations; but Twisted Metal is like Street Fighter 2 with cars. Maybe Mortal Kombat since Jaffe seemingly doesn't get Capcom fighters, but it has more depth than MK so I like to give him the benefit of a doubt.

Sort of how America never cared for the Densha de Go series, or Japan doesn't care for Marvel Versus games. :1

I'm not sure what Europe doesn't like other than games coming out late.
