Where's the hype for Xenoblade Chronicles X?

One of my favorite things from the original Xenoblade, the character interactions, doesn't look like it'll be in X.

How am I suppose to enjoy the game without being born in a world of strife, against the odds, and choosing to fight?

Certainly seems like a less personal story this time around. Which is a shame, given how awesome the first one was.

This is definitely a game that could have benefited from the one year announce and release schedule.

It's been too damn long. I can't sustain hype for 2 and a half years.

But I will buy it the first week and probably play it for a hundred hours.

I finished the second-to-last story mission and needed to do a good bit of grinding before the final story mission would open up. That happened to coincide with The Witcher 3 launch, which totally stole my attention and I never went back.

I really should return to the game and finish it up at some point.

Largely, my impressions in the import thread were pretty negative, but I think there's definitely something compelling to the game. Flying around in the mechs is a lot of fun, too.

I'm still pretty excited for it, though it is kind of downer to know right out of the gate that it's probably not as good as the first Xenoblade. Plus like others have said, it was announced almost 3 years ago, which while at the time made for an awesome January 2013 Direct, it led to both this and Yoshi just kind of feeling weak.

18 months should be the max for a game to revealed vs actually coming out. 2 years isn't super terrible if it's an expectedly big game like Xenoblade or a Zelda...but any later than that is really pushing it.

If the western release had coincided with the Japanese one, I think I would have been more hyped.

But the length of the localization process has sort of dulled my interest, especially when I started watching gameplay videos and seeing things about the plot and gameplay.

This. I think they could have knocked it out of the park if this had hit in like August. But now it's been a prolonged time to get it to the west, and in the meantime there has been a pretty fair amount of so-so impressions and reviews from the Japanese release which I know has definitely tempered my expectations. It certainly doesn't help that almost every time I've seen the game come up in the last few months it's regarding what a 13 year-old character in the game is wearing.

Aside from all of that though it's a Wii U game which inherently works against it, and it's releasing in December right after a crazy blockbuster Fall release calendar (Fallout 4, Halo 5, Battlefront, Black Ops 3, etc etc). Even if it had reviewed well in Japan it still would be getting sent to die as a Wii U release in December. This really, really, really needed to be out this past Summer. Even as a huge fan of the original I'm debating canceling my CE order since I don't know I'll have the time or money at that point in the year after a crazy fall schedule and mediocre/mixed reviews.

I'm not as hyped for it after hearing people's impressions. Supposedly the characters and story aren't as good this time around.

I'm sure I'll still have fun with the exploration and combat, but right now I'm a lot more hyped for FFXV because I love the idea of a road trip with your bros, and the environments and gameplay look great.

My hype died when the Japanese version was not super well received. Or am I imagining this?
Your imagining things, it was well recieved

As for me I've been hype for a long time, have the special edition on preorder for months now

RPGs these days have such a long development and localisation to a point that worrying about a title or two just feels damn tedious.

Yeah, it's tiring tbh. Even big rpgs like FF have made me lose hype.

I've never really been hyped for Xenoblade X though, other than the reveal trailer.

This game is a perfect cautionary tale for an over-extended hype cycle.

If this was announced at the beginning of the year, I'd be extremely excited. As it is, it's coming out in less than a month and I'm just feeling tepid about it.

Don't announce games three years ahead of launch again Nintendo.

What mediocre/mixed reviews? You mean that one guy from Kotaku who hated the first game as well?

Nintendo has been weirdly reticent about the localization. I don't think I've seen a single video with the English dub. It seems like it's been radio silence since the Japanese release. I watched a few streams back then, but that's the last I saw of it.

Looking forward to next month. :)

Nintendo should pull a direct for it like they did for Wonderful 101.

A big videoblow out like that would be needed. (Plus it'd get me more interested probably..)

Yeah, RPGs used to be my favorite genre. Then now less time to give + my favorite games getting changed around (RIP Fantasy Life 2) has made me love them less. Although Undertale was awesome!

Don't announce games three years ahead of launch again Nintendo.

I think I can agree. My hype for FF15 fizzed out awhile ago. Doubt anything Zelda Wii U can get me excited.

Its been a long wait but I'm still pretty hyped for it. The collectors edition thread was quite active if that means anything.

I too was worried about story and such at first but I read some spoilers, (to my dismay), found out about some sick story stuff, so I no longer need to worry.

Xenoblade was my game of the generation last gen, so I'm excited, but... I can't say I'm as hyped as I was when the game was first announced and shown off. There's just something about the game that doesn't give me that same feeling as the first Xenoblade. I'm not going into X thinking it'll be as good as the first one because I can't imagine it'll overtake it which is a little sad, but I'm sure I'll still enjoy it.

Also part of my hype is gone because of what I'll be doing that month and afterwards. I'm returning to college for the first time in a while in January, so I'll be reviewing stuff for parts of the next couple months. I don't want it taking up too much of my time lol

Hype through the roof here. Everything I've seen of the game looks phenomenal.

edit: The reviews I read from dualshockers and NWP seemed very positive overall. Praising the combat and online component. One of the negative points was that you have to do mandatory quests sometimes. Not really a problem for me since I poured 150 hours into the original Xenoblade doing every quest I could find lol.

It's a Wii U game, that was released in Japan months back, and the buzz around it isn't super positive. Pretty clear recipe for middling hype.

I think you misspelled DOLLS

I'm never accepting the skell localization

You will accept that and more.
I don't understand why our western minds couldn't conceptualize a mecha being called a Doll, but I'll let Nintendo make that call for me.

Seriously though I'm really confused as to why there's this huge pervasive myth that X was poorly received in Japan

It wasn't extremely positive, either... certainly not compared to its predecessor.

That kotaku article

I mean yeah, that seems to be where it started, I just find it really weird how one bad preview (From a guy who didn't like the well received first game either) somehow meant that it was poorly received in general. Because it really, really wasn't. Most Japanese players really enjoyed the game based on surveys I've seen

Game was met with basically meh reviews. Gameplay seems to be the same boring MMO-like from XBC, but with an even more uninteresting storyline and no really cool characters since MC is customizable and the other two are generic anime girls.

So basically it's a game being carried completely by the mecha, which I hope is good since I do have it preordered.

I'm hyped and tempted to buy both digital and physical.

Also, seems that it got the award of Best RPG at PGW. Pretty cool!

congrats to them

this alone earned them an award

Glad to see lot of people excited for the game!

Pretty sure it will be lot of fun to do online quests with you guys. :)

This is completely false

I was incredibly hyped when the game was revealed. But the following has dulled my hype so much that I don't even know I'll buy it release day (may pick it up a few months later for cheaper).
- Custom main character
- Poor story/characters as per impressions

My favourite aspect of the original Xenoblade was the setting, story and characters. And this game sounds like it took most of that out.

This is a Vita game, right? Someone whom I greatly respect and admire inferred this was a Vita game last week but I can't find it on any release calendar so I'm confused.

(Incidentally, yeah... I'm still way stoked for Xenoblade X. It's what's left for the Wii U after it comes out that has me rather nonplussed.)

I don't know. Here's one metric for you:

Xenoblade: http://wiimk2.net/title.php?title=757

Highest rated Wii RPG on the site.

XenobladeX: http://wiimk2.net/wiiu/title.php?title=124

Far fewer reviews, but fairly middling compared to its predecessor. (A 59 on MK2 is actually fairly decent, relatively).

Even Famitsu (lol) rated it a bit lower than the original at a 34 (vs. 36). I don't know what surveys you're referring to, but the general reception is not nearly as strong as Xenoblade for the Wii was.

I actually prefer this games setting, where earth is already destroyed and your a lone colony on a alien planet.

I did like the previous games story/setting, but it only got more interesting with the addition of characters later on in the game, in my opinion.

The topic of story, it's mostly in the kizuna quests/heart to hearts. The story is spread out and meant to be played for the long term. I do understand people having issues not having all the story in cutscenes but there's far more in the side quests which builds it outward. It's meant to feel like you're exploring this planet.

Speaking of Xenoblade Chronicles X hype, I guess Nintendo is going to release the last 3 parts of the Wii U - Xenoblade Chronicles X: Survival Guides this month? They've only released episodes 1 and 2 so far.

I really don't think they did a good job with the execution, regardless of the intent.

There are quite a few things that really don't reward (and even penalize) free exploration in XenobladeX to the point that I much preferred the more linear path of the original game. It felt like far more of a grand adventure.

There's a gaf thread I've been trying to find where Famitsu posted some survey stats about how the people who played the game recieved it, it was overwhelmingly positive, but I have a haRd time finding that thread

If X is half as good as the original, I'll be happy. Xenoblade Chronicles was an all time masterpiece that I don't expect to be topped anytime soon.
