Which Games Have Just BORED You to DEATH?

Please don't misunderstand me, I'm not saying disliking a popular game is inherently disingenuous, but posts with a list of five or ten hugely popular games, with no reasons given, just didn't ring true to me.

Portal 2 is like doing a test, it reminds me of homework. It is sleep inducing.

Dragon Quest 8

It was fun for the first 10 hours, ok for another 10 but then the slow, repetitive battles just ground me down.
I totally agree, the story and characters didn't do much for me and the charm of a traditional RPG with great 3d graphics really wore off after about 10 hours.

Each to their own and all that, but really? I mean, saccharine, twee, not challanging enough, maybe, but boring? It's just so inventive and colourful. What aspects bored you? I'm genuinely interested.
Wouldn't be able to explain it , I don't remember much about the game , it just felt bland to me , just "more of the same" after the first galaxy .

Got bored when I got to 20 stars or something , never went back .

You know what, there's some truth in that. But as I say, most people seem to have a genuine reason for disliking whatever game they posted, while others just copy and paste the top 10 from metacritic and be done with it. Maybe if they validated their opinion, it wouldn't come off quite so obnoxious.

Well I'd trash Mass effect again for the worst of it's kind AI (hell make that worst of any "AAA" game ever), total lack of character growth in the story and a big lack of character exposition for certain key characters, dull point and click lastershoot excuse for gunplay, bad and akward GUI for weapon modules, copy pasta planet 'dungeon' design, planets that look like they were created in 3 minutes with 2 brushes in the UDK map editor while not even bothering to use the smooth tool , ultra repetitive gameplay, bad uncanny valley animations, buggy selfshadows 'fixed' by removing said shadows in a patch, constant reuse of assets in environments.

The game screams lazy design and mediocrity (and worse) from every pore.

But that'll just get the fanboys on my back because how dare anyone criticise their goty/rpg carrot/sex simulator.

So I just list it without commenting, because it did bore me, to no end.
One of the few games where I thought 'I want those hours of my life back' after listening to all the 'you really have to play this' fawning.

Oh and I already played this game before anyhow, it's called KOTOR.
At least kotor was more interesting and did something new for it's time.

The first Mass Effect is really boring, yeah. The second is a little more interesting for a while, as the combat is certainly more exciting and involving, but it does wear thin after 15-20 hours.

Trying to play my way through the entire Final Fantasy series. Got through 1 and 2 relatively fine, hit a brick wall after about an hour of FF3DS. That game is slowwwwwwww.

Same here. What in the hell are people doing when they buy games from series they don't enjoy? It's like they're trying to force themselves to enjoy these series.

If you don't enjoy the damned series, vote with your wallet and use your money on games you'll actually enjoy. If you don't do that you're just succumbing to the marketing blitz.

The only standout I can really remember recently was Fallout 3.

Played for about 4 or so hours and really wanted to like it, but just found it incredibly dull. Brownest game ever.

Resident Evil on PlayStation, although I haven't played the GC/Wii remake yet to see if anything has changed. I started the game, got to a certain point where I decided to put it on the backburner, restarted it, forgot what to do next, then started back over again. I'm near the end of the game (the guardhouse) at this point though.

And I echo Assassin's Creed. I got to Nazarene (or one of the places at the beginning) and had to journey through the desert. That was enough for me...I may pick it back up later or just go ahead and start on ACII/Brotherhood.

Final Fantasy XIII, I gave the game a few tries and it's probably the only game that has almost put me to sleep.

Any open-world/sandbox game (i.e Oblivion, Red Dead Redemption, ect.): I've only ever finished one (FO:NV) and that was with cheats enabled to essentially bypass most combat.

Pokemon Series: I've just lost interest in them now.

Mario Series: Similar to Pokemon.

Dragon Quest IX: For all the complaints about JRPGs being stagnate, it's rather interesting that the most stagnate of them all is so popular (in the west). I'm not a huge fan of the series in general but having blank slate party members completely killed the game for me.

Dude, DQ is rather niche here in the West. It's Japan where it's considered the bee's knees.

And for the series' unabashed traditionalism (which is actually refreshing in many ways), there's actually a decent bit of variance between each game. I can understand people finding the DQ series boring, but if Pokemon and Kingdom Hearts manage so much attention over here, then I daresay it deserves it as well, as it's arguably the most consistent jRPG series.

Lulz on Half-Life 2 in the OP. Came just to post that. I didn't find it so much as boring but as too tedious to play. It also gave me a migraine when I would play it.

L.A. Noire :P

It was a good game but I had more fun watching someone playing it while doing something in the background than actually playing it.

every RPG (besides Pokemon)

i honestly cant fathom how anyone can play any form of RPG (that isn't Pokemon). i have tried so many of them, and i rarely stay playing for more than 10 minutes. mass effect, kotor, bioshock(which is only slightly RPG), all so god damn boring.

i don't understand what Pokemon does differently, because i have almost a hundred hours in white.

whatever, I'm content with my bro shooters.

Wow, to me it was the exact opposite. I found the second game to be boring (except for some stories of the crew), and the first game to be incredible interesting just to learn everything about that future and how humans get to their role, specters, all the species, some talks with the Reapers, etc etc.

Anywho, tastes tastes :P

Just play the Famicom version. Plus, FFIII is really forgettable, it just isn't that great.

Maybe you would like Dragon Quest or Earthbound?

RPGs live and die by how fast their battles can be and how annoying they are. If you make the person hate how slow or bad the battle system is, your more or less have lost them. They need to enjoy the battle system and actually be able to get into things like boss battles.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. At this point, I'm convinced that post-KOTOR BioWare games are simply not for me. It's like reading a really bad, really long novel. My time is worth more than that. I only finished it so I could play the second one (which was much more interesting, but still kind of boring).

Final Fantasy XII. I was pretty pumped after seing screenshots and reading reviews, but I couldn't get through even an hour of the game.

MGS4: WAY too little game in this overstuffed cinematic package. Kojima really needs an editor for many of the talking points too, so much repeat dialogue drives me fucking insane. Many of the dramatic reveals came across with far less impactful for that reason too. Hell, I still haven't finished the game! (I had enough when I noticed the wasted potential of Shadow Moses...little robots? god damnit did Kojima whiff on that section).

Devil May Cry 2: The game felt like a slog.

EVE Online: I recognize the potential this game has, but man can it be utterly dull sometimes (or all the time, really).

Suikoden I: I like Suikoden games, but after playing through III and II, this game was so difficult to get through.

Legend of Heroes: Tear of Vermillion. I usually have a pretty high tolerance for most jrpgs, but this one really made me want to fall asleep. I only lasted 5 or 6 hours before shelving it for good. Bought it in anticipation for LOH Tits, but I should have listened to the people saying it was shit. Anyway, this game bored me so much because it felt like one of the most generic jrpgs I have ever played. And any charm the characters might have had was lost due to the broken translation.

A lot of games actually fall into this category for me.

Metal Gear Solid 4
Final Fantasy XIV (which ever was the latest MMO)
Call of Military Shooter: Insert Cash Cow Sequel Here
Grand Turismo #
Everything after Halo 1
Everything after Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Everything after Fallout 3
World of Warcraft
And many more...

I was bored to fucking death with this game and I have tried 3 times to complete it and never can, it just runs on, and on, and on, the characters have no life, the story is well, none existent, it was a graphical giant in 2004, got it for free so I don't feel like I wasted money...

Uncharted 2.

I dug the first one. It was something different (so to speak... Han Solo + Tomb Raider + Gears).

I can't get into the second one, no matter how hard I try. It feels like The Hangover 2, basically the same thing in a different setting (oh no, another ambush!). The problem is that neither the platforming or shooting bits are solid enough on their own to make up for it.

I keep trying, though. I rented it twice and returned it without finishing it, and I just bought the GOTY version. I'll get through it, but it's a slog.

Dude, just let it be. You don't owe it to Naughty Dog or anything.

All GTAs up until 4.
Halo 3: ODST
Uncharted 2
Half Life 2
Fallout: New Vegas
Shadow of the Colossus
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I see I'm not alone with my choices. I always thought I was missing something.

I was referring specifically to RPG fans (or at least people that claim to be) in the west. It's probably most noticeable among the gaming press, as many of them will complain about JRPGs being shit now because they never change (which isn't true but that's another topic) but treat DQIX, one of the series that have changed the least, as this amazing handheld gem. The primary reason why DQ fans are so dedicated is because the developers don't mess around with the formula too much so it's just a weird dichotomy.

As for people being surprised about some not liking the major AAA titles (top 10 bestsellers or whatever), I too don't like the bulk majority of them. I don't play shooters or brawlers/3rd person action games so about 85% of those AAA games are instantly put on my ignore list. Everything else it hit or miss. I didn't list any of those though because, as I said, I simply don't bother to play those games but a lot of people feel pressured to play them because they are considered by most to be the best games (It's how I got suckered into playing RDR. Never again.).

Super Mario Galaxy
Every Halo
Metal Gear Solid 4
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Assassin's Creed
God of War 3
Mass Effect 1 & 2
Kingdom Hearts (what was all the hype about?)

Has anyone had gotten bored with Folklore or Heavy Rain, those 2 games are on their way to me.

I'm going to throw in something very different.

I played these games and I didn't find them boring. I found them very entertaining, but only because I played them in co-op.

Halo 3 and Gears of War 2.

Halo 3 looked amazing (them trailers, man), and after having friends tell me about how great the story is, I had to chuckle and tell myself I should have known better. I honestly believe this must have been a low point for the series and the first two games must have been a lot better because playing the campaign in single player would be a chore.

I'm going to pick up Halo Reach so I can co-op complete that too.

Gears of War 2 is similar also. No one told me about how "great" it is. But it's popular and one of the main franchises on the 360. It's mundane when you play it on your own though. Much, much better with a friend.

Final Fantasy XII: Screw this game's:

Non-existent story (Politics? Just what I'm looking for in my Final Fantasy!);

Bland characters ("Hey Vaan, wanna tag along and help save the nation?" "Sure!" "Okay, let's never speak again then");

Boring-ass MMO-like gameplay (Walk for 30 seconds, slash slash, walk for 30 seconds, slash slash, take forever to reach the next town -- have nothing interesting happen there -- walk for 30 seconds, slash slash).

Boring. Most disappointing Final Fantasy for me.

I can see how some people think it's a good game but it's just not for me Actually I can't.
Oh man, this game. This game let me down so much.

I still remember the first picture I saw. The art looked amazing. So much potential. Then I saw the picture of the Judges and then I discovered it would be a political story. Hype went through the roof.

Then about two years later, I saw a trailer on play.com, realised it was out and bought it.

Wow, did it let me down.

It has some good ideas but it's bloody boring overall. I can't believe people try and say this game's half-assed story executed so poorly is something okay or even good. It falls apart so quickly and squanders what potential there ever could have been.

It doesn't help that you have one of the crappiest cast of characters I've ever seen in any game. Bloody Vaan and that annoying sidekick of his. Infuriating they are. The Princess doesn't help either. Shit character. You're trying to make a serious and more subtle game and you have a character dressed like that? I won't go into her boring character arc.

Balthier is the only redeemable aspect of this game, along with some gameplay features and mechanics (overworld, hunts, enemies can be seen for the first time, changes of season etc.). Everything else sucked.

There were some really good ideas in this game. They were just coated with crap a lot of the time.

Shenmue 1 and 2.

I have given both games a shot 2 or 3 times, but end up quitting after a few hours.

I will never understand why people love these games.

No mention of Ar Tonelico? The first one at least was a boringly easy RPG with stupid dating sim elements with pointless character development and innuendos everywhere in the script. Stopped playing about midway through it.

Walk straight line, Long Cutscene. Battle! X, X, X ... Paradigm shift X, X, X, walk another straight line , battle without cutscene, X, X, X ... Paradigm Shift X, X, X , walk the line, Long cutscene, and we know what else goes there.

Underdeveloped Characters, Lack of Exploration, Lacking Story and super repetitive combat.

The Graphics were outstanding and the combat was fun for a bit.

This is pretty non-controversial, but after playing my share of flawed-but-interesting games like Nier and Alpha Protocol, I guess it's good I played through the Penny Arcade Episodes (which I bought a while back on Steam for about $3) to remember what honest mediocrity is like. Some real tedious design without much good payoff.

Then again, fishing in Nier actually put me to sleep on more than one occasion.

Half Life 2 - i tried two times to play/finish it (pc/ps3) but it is so fucking boring - impossible; and i loove Half Life 1
