To be fair, India and China for example are still fairly isolated in terms of spread. Stuff gets produced for them, but they don't reach many markets.

Western culture dominates the world.

Like many of the best who have come before him he has appeal in South America; footballing greats are known to people in the third world and are idolised as a way of escaping poverty and as people who lift their nation into the global spotlight by performing on the world's stage at tournaments like the World Cup and the Champions League.
