I think a big part of the problem is 1) they have engineered a plethora of sex/intimacy substitutes and 2) there is no deep-rooted puritanism in their culture instilling sexual shame and preventing most people from getting too deep into these synthetic sexual experiences.
Of course the invention of these substitutes could easily be a result of their human intimacy problems rather than a cause. That question can be answered by comparing the tech innovation timeline with the diminishing intimacy timeline.

Japanese men are often called 'herbivores' (I resent that, I'm a vegetarian and I get plenty ;p) and often it is not hard to see why. It's really interesting if you watch a lot of anime and look at their society because there is rarely if ever any sort of straying from the norm as relates to sexual identity or how sex and such is viewed. And by that I mean how the media is portraying it or wants people to feel or see sex as.
Just think of the last time you had a character in an anime want sex of some sort that didn't involved having a child. It almost always involves some sort of want of a family or child. Really odd to see it happen in almost every character no matter their personality otherwise. Things like marriage, children, shit like that...it becomes really noticeable after a while.

This was touched on in the Vice thread on the same issue, but it seems to be a result of outdated aspects of the culture clashing with modern economic realities. You're starting to see it happen in slow motion in western countries too -- young men putting off marriage and children because they can't find a good job.
From there, I'm wondering how long this might persist until the work culture begins to change. Aren't a lot of the leaders over there really old? I feel like it'd take at least another generation for this to shake out. It's almost like an accelerated version of what young Americans are about to go through as the Baby Boomers retire.
Japanese porn is pretty awful with the shrieking and what-not, but it's not like Westerners' fantasies are much different. I remember one dude bragging about how he "flipped (this) bitches uterus" and sent her to the hospital. Men don't feel like men unless their penises can do irreparable harm.

Pretty much. Weird rumours that spread online don't really make for a realistic image of Japan. There are a lot of things contributing to the low sex rates in Japan, but I honestly don't think "men being man-children who only like body pillows and anime robot waifus that don't smell" is a factor. These people are really ostracised by the general public. There are herbivore men, but it's not really the same thing.
Japan has a really messed up work system. Mothers simply can't work the 14+ hour days, five days a week that are required of them. It's not healthy for anyone really, married or not.

As a side note, the pill was only legalised in Japan in 1999. It's still not very popular because there was a lot of misinformation published about the dangers of taking it.

IT's a symptom of gender roles shifting. Men no longer being the sole bread winner and women no longer being the only one child rearing. Everyone's trying to re-discover their role in the world. Throw economic shifts on top of that and you basically have an entire generation "lost."
