Why are people OK with 1080p/30fps, but not 720p/60fps?

I'm seeing this sentiment around here a lot, with some users using the 720p games as proof that the consoles are weak, even though all of them (AFAIK) are running at 60fps. By contrast 1080p/30fps games are largely given a free pass despite requiring almost exactly the same amount of power compared to 720p/30fps:

720p/60fps: 2x
1080p/30fps: 2x
1080p/60fps: 4x

Do you just value resolution over framerate?

The same reason people are happy with interactive movies rather than an investment into better gameplay mechanics and systems.

I honestly have no clue why people hate 720p so much when a majority of games this generation weren't even running in that resolution.

Being able to run at 1080p doesn't take the same amount of resources as 720p 60fps. Just because you can push more pixels doesn't mean you can update physics, AI, game logic etc at double the rate. Especially when these consoles are likely to be very CPU bound.

I prefer a resolution native to my display. I have been gaming mostly on my PC monitor (HP2501b I think) and it has a native resolution of 1080p.

Playing 720p games on it isn't too bad. But I'd rather play games in 1080p. They look much better. I don't find 30fps to be that big of a deal, the lower resolution is worse to me.

A game running at 1080p looks much better than at 720p (and is also running at the native resolution on most tvs) and the average person can't notice the framerate as long as it's stable and above 30.

720 60fps fine with me if the AA is there.

Problem is quite a few engines are post processing the AA nowadays so 1080p is preferable but unlikely in the long term.

If it's a matter of "would you rather" I would pick 1080p 30 fps every single time. If there was a menu toggle with those 2 options I would select it even before starting the game.

if I have to choose, I choose the frame rate. its no less disappointing to hear when consoles arn't even out yet.

again, pc gaming people, there is no substitute.

Im not ok with any, but since it seems is what we will get on the notsoNextGENconsoles:

Im ok with 1080p@30fps for the majority of games

Im ok with 720p60fps for Online FPS

and Im ok with 180p@6ofps for games like Forza and GT

Most people have native 1080 displays now. Native resolution will be much better (provided games actually run at 1080 and not upscaled variants, like 1440 or 900). As for 30fps versus 60fps, I would take true 1920 x 1080/30 fps over 1280 x 720/60fps (+associated scaling) any day of the week.

I'm not an fps whore at all though. I remember running source at like 180fps on a GTx6800U when they were the new tech. At times on consoles you get slowdown or frame rate drops, but this is usually down to poor porting (Skyrim for example), hardware in last stages being pushed to the max (The Last of Us) or poor coding (ME3). In 95% of cases 30fps is fine.

So people don't want video games with quality gameplay?
No, they do. But others are fine with a quality story at the expense of agency. Should you level the same criticism against classic point and clicks or adventure games, you are likely to run into a bit more resistance as people forget that those types of games have not gone away.

I am okay with 720p/60fps and 1080p/locked 30 FPS for next gen consoles. Ideally I'd want devs to strive for 1080p/60 FPS.

For the most part, I would much prefer 720p60 over 1080p30. For some game genres like RPGs, 1080p30 is fine.

These are my thoughts too. There are some genres where fidelity is more important/noticeable than framerate, like RPGs. But there are others (such as fast-paced shooters) where 60fps makes a huge difference. So the Battlefield 4 backlash surprises me a little.

On my PC, if a game doesn't run well, instead of dropping it down to 1280 x 720 to get 60 frames per second, I drop down the image quality.

I think 1920 x 1080 at 60 frames per second is the absolute minimum games should be targeting. I don't care if the game ends up looking worse for it.

720p without AA looks woeful by today's standards.

I'm fine with 720p/60fps for a high end game if there is enough AA. What's generally easier to achieve though? 1080p @ 30fps or 720p @ 60fps?
