why can't we have serious gaming polls in this forum?

Should GAF have serious gaming polls on this forum?

Results are only viewable after voting.
I agree I love polls but all you will see here is that overused Thor 2 meme. It was funny the first 5 times it happened not the next 100 times.

'Comedy' Gaf polls always remind me of this...

They're never funny.

The rare legit ones that get made are welcome though.

The last Persona 5 dealy poll was legit funny even Hardin mentioned it on Tiwtter.

The "Thor 2: Dark World" meme will be the death of me.

It's been run into the ground so goddamn hard at this point.

Mods, pls, no more Thor 2 memes in our polls.

The reason is, this is a discussion forum, and they don't harbor discussion. Imagine if every thread here was a one-word answer. Example - Name the best Mario game. All the replies are 'Mario 3' or 'SMW.'

This is a discussion forum.

A much better thread to create would be 'Why is your favorite Mario game better than the others?' or 'Make the case for best Mario game.' That way, you offer your detailed, nuanced opinion, and others can agree or disagree, while all enjoying each others enthusiasm.

Polls don't do that. Polls fuckin' suck, breh.

I am not convinced.

polls don't automatically block you from posting whatever you think.

besides, there are specific cases where a poll would be nice, like my one example with the Switch presentation.

GAF would still be 98% regular threads

I prefer it when people answer questions or cast a vote with a proper post. That way they can explain their reasons, and others can engage more easily. The aggregated numbers we end up with matter very little to me in the end, so I'm not sure what thing of substance the poll would add. Without polls, the only opinions we're going to miss out on are the ones from people who don't have the time or willingness to engage properly, and the opinions of people who want to contribute anonymously.

Poll doesn't even exists on mobile site...
I did not even realise this.

For those curious, the Thor 2 meme comes from OT side. In review threads for DC films, defenders of the poorly received movies always seemed to point at "b-b-but Thor 2!" in some attempt to show either critic bias for Marvel or prop up a bad DC movie. It happened in every single review thread or LTTP thread for BvS and Suicide Squad. The joke was that all comic book movie threads are eventually about Thor 2
and Iron Man 3
. Thor 2 is the Godwin's Law of cape movies.

edit: thanks for the explanation.

I like that meme because while it's true the joke itself is old, it's a solid reminder of 'Hey, this a is just a dumb poll on the internet that you shouldn't take too seriously.", which is something most people who make or participate in polls on the internet seem to forget.

Why not? We just ignore the meme option on discussion. The guy that vote for the meme will not post a opinion, so no problem.

Also this.

people can stll post and encourage discussion in polls, I don't see the downside
People spamming poll answers or lists is a death knell for engaged debate. People usually don't bother to articulate their thoughts when they're also allowed to just list a couple names instead. Neither polls nor lists promote or encourage competent discussion, which is what this place aims to do.

on the other side, there are a shitton of lurkers who don't feel confident writing to strangers or don't feel confident with their writing skills in english

a poll would give them some sort of voice.
Not GAF's job to "give these people some sort of voice". If you want to be heard, speak up.

You know they could just not add a joke option but i think we are stuck in this cycle where everyone here is obsessed with getting a funny tag under name or some other shit. This site is mostly comedy discussion with how thread titles are constantly changed cos bruh im funny right or oh look at me funny first post
Then cue 15 pages of everyone quoting first with bruh ur so leet haahahahah 11111111
Then someone does a gif and cycle restarts.

Thats basically every thread here lol

So that's why polls are silly here

Have to agree with some of the guys here. Polls kinda distract from the "discussion" part of the discussion forum. Why make a comment if you can just click to vote?

Besides, the Thor 2 meme is priceless :D

can't wait to make the following polls:

which platform has the best games
which platform has the worst games
which platform maker will die first
which platform maker should die first
which souls game has the best waifus

I'm now curious about this Thor 2 meme. Where did it start?

The funny part is that it's not absurdly abhorrently bad, which would make it's meme status more understandable. - it's not a Wolverine Origins kind of thing.

It's just so very very very mediocre.

Poll: "What is the most mediocre movie of all time?"

A statistically relevant poll would require a random selection of samples. Polls in forums are worthless unless you want to see poll results that are applicable to one sample (NeoGAF) only.

I don't think the OP is referring to running polls to statistically determine the true viewpoints of some other population (who would do that in the first place?) but to gauge the viewpoints of specifically the thread readers. We already have tons of threads which are about listicles or deal with some sort of voting process where people usually post one word/image without further elaboration (exceptions being proper end of year voting threads). I guess the concern is with the presence of polls these threads will become more prevalent or even less conducive to discussions.

I'm now curious about this Thor 2 meme. Where did it start?
I think it was in the Batman V Superman review thread where people were using Thor 2 (considered the worst MCU film) as a benchmark of how bad a superhero movie can be and if BvS is worse.

Intrigued.....tell me more please, I am completely in the dark here.

Thor 2: The Dark World is pretty much the pinnacle of the comic book movie genre. It takes the best elements of Spider-Man 2, The Dark Knight and the first Avengers, puts them in a blender and the result is something that is even better than the sum of its parts.

Thanks for this. I knew Thor was a meme here, but I never knew the origin. Also lead me to find out about Godwin's law which I was also somehow unaware of.

I think the only times I've thought a topic could really do with a poll is when its devolving into opinion versus opinion and people are making statements like "x is way more popular than y" or "way more people would rather see a y remake than a z remake" and a quick straw poll would show up one side or the others confirmation bias quickly (for the sample size of people looking at that thread anyway)

OP, this is the absolute most roundabout what you can bring up a topic about Thor 2: The Dark World. This doesn't belong on gaming side. If you wanted to talk about Thor 2, why didn't you just say so for the beginning?

OK so still waiting for the root of this Thor thing. Seen plenty of polls and never that (IIRC). Edit:
