why can't we have serious gaming polls in this forum?

Should GAF have serious gaming polls on this forum?

Results are only viewable after voting.
If you want to champion how polls may help a discussion and not just be "Nuh uh, Cloud from Advent Children is totally stronger than Naruto" GameFAQS may not be the best example.

what a disappointing outcome for a very easy question.

personally I couldn't care any less about what % of GAF wants or doesn't want polls, considering I wouldn't want regulars to be able to do polls, I'd leave that for the mods, just like it is now.

I wanted to know why mods, who are the only ones allowed to use them, have never ever come up with a poll that could be interesting and actually useful for gaming discussion.

Is there some rule for all mods stating "Polls are allowed as long as they are used to derail threads or make jokes, otherwise please refrian".? it's just weird how those joke polls appear, it's a guilty pleasure I guess?

I don't know if that's fair.
There are times when there are interesting polls, like recently on what people thought of a female Link.

any link to that? I missed it.

I've been here in neogaf for over 8 years and other than the Subzero vs Scorpion poll, I honestly don't remember any other one without a joke inserted in there.

I think the Thor meme can be funny sometimes, but I would like to see more serious polls sometime. Seeing the joke option in every single poll (except this one!) gets old.

blame space vs. Timedog

That was not a fucking laughing matter

Polls? To what end? Spurring discussion can be done as effectively (moreso?) by simply stating an opinion and (hopefully) a compelling reason for that opinion. No need for polls.

I never understand why people took issue with Thor 2 almost always been option. If you ignore it you can get whatever consensus you want and frankly it's simply a way for someone that does care about said to display how little they care. Which for me ends up quite often.

The iconic videogame music thread turned out pretty well IMHO. Sure polls are trite but that one was enjoyable. The results eventually got rigged but it was even more fun without using a tired joke.

Now some mod will ruin it by turning all the options to Thor 2's soundtrack.

Just ignore the Thor 2 or joke answer de jour results and you have pretty normal polling most of the time.

Gaf is way too cool to just do normal polls, especially the mods. Funny too.

Boy oh boy, everyone and their alts coming out to vote for Thor 2. Good stuff.

And yeah, golly, when I think serious poll I think of GameFAQs. Link vs Bowser omg GO

think again sucker

I laughed.

Seriously though, it would be nice to have serious polls now and then.

if I ever visit Gamefaqs, I'd take a look at the daily poll.

I was indifferent before, but just like that you've convinced me that serious polls are an absolutely terrible idea.

Anyway, in a more general sense: GAF is supposed to be a discussion forum for adults. At a forum, you present ideas and counter-arguments on the basis of reasoned (and sometimes impassioned) discussion for the purposes of not just disseminating, but refining ideas.

Polling is useful for determining the zeitgeist but honestly tends to undermine serious discussion. I mean, look at how often people retreat to what few polls we do have (GOTY) in lieu of offering any actual argument. (Case in point: deflecting criticism of MGS4 with "It won GAF GOTY. TWICE.")
