Why do people want Half Life 3 so much?

Of course, it definitely lives or dies on the strength of the procedures involved, as well as the quality of the tiles you can produce (and in what quantities). Still conceptually would fit L4D quite well. Assuming it'd work :p

I would actually be very glad if those rumors running around a year ago (or so) were true and Valve was working to make HL3 an open world, non-linear game.

I know that a lot of people hear "open world", think about Skyrim or GTA and start to freak out, but I'm thinking more about a formula like "STALKER meets Half-Life".

I'd love a Stalker meets Half life game, but it's really just not Valves style and never has been. I'm not even sure I'd trust them to do it well.

But time has really passed them by. It's been nine years since HL2 and five years since Episode 2. A HL-style pure shooter -- with the mute protagonist, lack of inventory, no stats or progression, linear levels and everything else -- just wouldn't cut it today.

None of those things have anything inherently superior about them, they're modern "standards" that are just bloat (and very imbalanced) in most cases.

I do expect HL3 to experiment with stuff like that, but I'm also expecting it to do something different with them and not just clone them because they're in fashion at this time.

I played and loved all the Half-Life games as they came out.

For HL3 to even be good in this day and age is going to require it to be pretty different from HL2.

Inventory?
Stats?
Unlocks?

I still play the Half-Life games regularly and prefer them to most modern shooters.

Black Mesa was the best shooter of 2012.

All that Valve need to do is concentrate on making a fantastic, lived in world, with great set pieces and characters. There's nothing else out there that feels like a Half-Life game.

For me it was simply the best game in 2012 period, not just best shooter. I had a huge grin on my face the entire time I played it. I think the Half-Life formula holds up extremely well still. It didn't feel dated at all.

Agreed - just took the orange box out for a replay inspired by this thread. No complaints from here, game is still stellar entertainment.

I agree as well. I think there was some shock and awe that came with the earlier COD games that took the 'Michael Bay' approach to the single player campaign, but hopefully, the sheen of 'summer blockbuster set piece explosion thingy' has worn off with repeated exposure, and people are starting to get sick of that. Honestly, no other studio has done single player FPS as well as HL1/HL2.
