Why does the PS3 beep when you turn it on/off?

What I also dont understand is why I get a health warning every time I turn on ps3 and vita. Also why do I need to accept terms of service every time there's an update?

Audible feedback, that's pretty much it. Same reason why you hear something every time you scroll through the options in a (non web-based, web-users hate sound) menu or select something.

They included that stupid health warning in one of the newer updates, hate that, takes atleast a couple of extra seconds to get to the xmb.

I despise the beep.

God forbid someone might want to turn on the PS3 while someone else in the house is sleeping -- a regular occurrence in my apartment, where my beloved partner sleeps like a normal person and my night-shift-working self is occasionally awake at night and wants to play a game.

It's ridiculous.

And these days seemingly everything beeps. The PS3, the fan, the space heater -- all things that you might want to use when another person is sleeping. I was able to turn off the computer's startup sound, at least. (Haven't figured out how to turn off that sound that plays when you plug the iPhone into the Mac to charge it.)

A peaceful and quiet environment free of high-pitched beeps; is that too much to ask?

Glad to know it's not just me with the cracking. Even if it's universal, it can't be good.

The cracking doesn't do any harm. Everything that gets even mildly warm needs to expand.

Ya I saw the thread but never read enough into it to know it was top loading. Seems like a backwards choice. No excuse for the wording change imo.

Does not make sense! Not to me at least! >_<

Why does it not make sense to you? The top loader does not eject the disc.

Flip the mute switch for a second while you plug it in?

It needs to beep because it's so easy to accidentally turn on. Why oh why did Sony not make you have to hold the button down on the controller for a few seconds to turn it on (like 360)?

The amount of times I've accidentally turned my PS3 on is ridiculous. As soon as I hear that beep I get infuriated and then have to run over to the console to turn it off - ONLY THEN IT WON'T LET ME FOR ABOUT 15 SECONDS! Stupid Sony.

What are you doing with your controller that you might hit the button of your not playing it, do people just like to randomly man handle their controllers? lol.

And if it takes 15 seconds regardless of any button presses on the console, why bother getting up when you can do it from the controller?

I've never accidentally turned on either of my PS3's, but then I put the controllers down when I'm not going to use it.

Because audio cues are usefull, because if you press it longer you can get into the system recovery screen and the beep is different.
Also, 99% of the time I turn my PS3 with the DS3 and sometimes I have to press the PS button more than once so when I hear the beep i know it worked.

i think its because Sony hates us.

Can't stand that beep. Although similarly I can't stand the little twinkly thing the Wii does every time its turned on. For some reaosn on my TV the composite audio comes out way louder than eveything else so this little jingle blows me 8 feet accross the room every time i power up the Wii.

I really hate it. I'm usually playing from 11-12 PM to like 3-4 AM and that fucking "BEEP" has waken the other people in my house many a times in the past.

I googled to disable it but apaprently you can't :[

I've never accidentally turned on either of my PS3's, but then I put the controllers down when I'm not going to use it.

My PS3 doesn't get that much use, so the controller gets put away in a drawer. Whenever I rummage through the drawer, I accidentally either nudge that or the PS3 Bluetooth controller. It's not hard to accidentally turn my PS3 on. I've never ever accidentally turned my 360 on.

And as my television isn't on and/or the PS3 isn't selected as a source when this happens, then I can't use the controller to turn it off! Well, I could remember the button combination of PS button, down, down, X or whatever, but come on now!

I've wondered this ever since I got a PS3 back in 2009. It's pretty annoying and unnecessary. Why does it have to beep?

It's an indicator. Common of lots of appliance to let you know it is coming on and going off. The sound confirms your action, instant feedback and removes uncertainty of something not working.

People are of different ages, abilities and needs. Simple things like sound indicators have their genuine uses.

The beeps signify specific things. One beep is switched on or off.

You will notice that if you hold down the power buttong to switch off, it beeps twice if a game has frozen.

Doing so to switch on (and reset the display settings) will beep twice with a pause.

I always assumed that it worked the same way as BIOS beeps, that the beep pattern signifies different things, rather than just feedback for pressing the button.

After all, the lights come on, so you know it's started up without a beep.

I've never had any problem with the beep. Does it really bother people that much?

Reasons to not mind the beep:
If you sit on your controller / remote, it lets you know it's on.
If you're turning it on manually, it lets you know when to let go so you don't do a settings reset.

Reasons to not like the beep:
You have waged a war against anything that makes a tiny noise.

Why are people talking about using the Power button to turn their PS3 on? Who the hell does that? Just press the PS button on the controller! Anyway, I think the beep is a useful indicator that my attempt to turn it on was successful. Sure, I could probably hear it whirring on anyway (unless there's a lot of other noise), or I could look at it, but the beep lets me instantly know that it has turned on. It's helpful.

It doesn't beep when you turn it off (unless it freezes and you get three beeps).

If you do it from the Power button it does (which is also helpful, because you have to keep the button pressed for a few seconds before it happens).

Still doesn't make sense.
If you're at the XMB menu, selecting 'Remove Disc' would not (as far as we know) pop open the disc drawer.
So you'd still have to hit the physical button on the machine and pull the disc out.
So the command would be useless on the new machine.
It's not as if anybody is going to open the drawer, then select 'Remove Disc' and then take the disc out.
It should've remained as 'Eject Disc' on machines that actually eject the disc and just been a blocked out option on the new machine.

Unless the top loader has some sort of lock to keep the disc cover closed, and remove disc unlocks it.

Stop spinning + door unlock? The disc needs to stay revved up to stream the attract mode movie on some titles.

I did think about that, it's certainly a possibility but seems a little counterintuitive to force multiple buttons presses through a menu to remove a disc when both previous systems have offered an instant one-press ejection. Time will tell though I guess.....

Aye, good point!

Nevermind the beep, why can't I turn the PS3 power off without file system scan afterwards? This annoying feature apperaed in one of the firmwares and I can't find how to turn it off.

It means you aren't turning it off correctly, or something is wrong with your hard drive.
