Why does the PS3 beep when you turn it on/off?

I think this is because it's not a button or anything that gives you a tactile confirmation that it worked.

If it's a button, you know when it's pressed. No sound is needed. If you touch something and want to know it worked, you need other cues like sound or video feedback.

As silly as it may sound, if the "beep" wasn't there, most people would keep their thumb there until the console shuts down or until the console shoots an image. Sony didn't want that because "holding power on" for a long time is used for another function already.

But my slim PS3 has buttons :(

So you can't do any late night gaming.

It lets your parents know you snuck out of bed so they can find you and beat that ass/

Pretty much the right answer

Funny thing is the PS3 Slim made them actual buttons while X360-S has the touch-surface thingy. And X360-S does make a sound when you it on or off, so it's not just PS3.

Which begs the question...

buttons, man... What?

It always reminded me of a Bose-kinda thing... same with the design.

to let me know when someone has touched the most sensitive remote control ever designed lol. lightly tap that remote and the PS3 turns on.....its like it WANTS to be on always... :P

The beep is also useful when you need to A/V reset the PS3. You know the video reset works with that beep

Better question: why did one of the recent firmwares change the triangle menu text from "Eject Disc" to "Remove Disc". Eject catches my attention, remove does not an makes me stupid for a couple seconds before realizing I should select it. I'ma just start using the not-button-button thing to get my discs from now on -.-;

It doesn't beep if you turn it off by going through the menu (well the slim makes a tiny beep)
It does make a sound when you turn it off that way? I always use the menus so I never knew, besides the triple-beep when the system freezes!

Holy shit, I thought I was crazy for thinking it used to be eject. Seriously why did they change it.

For the aforementioned reasons above, as well as the fact that the "beeps" are actually tied to certain machine functions, whether it be the beeps that signify the system has frozen and is resetting, to the ability to turn on the fan test mode for certain models. There's always a reason. ;) While I guess it could be annoying, I've never really had a problem with it.

Have you not seen the leaked new PS3 model pics?

I've actually never spared this any thought. Thinking about it now, though, and the beep is somewhat useful for me. I always turn the system on via the controller, and sometimes it doesn't turn on the first time I press the PS button for whatever reason. So it's useful in letting me know it actually turned on.

If I unplug a PS3 controller from my gaming PC it will start my PS3. Why? I have no idea, but the beep is a good way to make me notice it.

Cause they like needless changes for the sake of saying their new firmware did *something*!

Ya I saw the thread but never read enough into it to know it was top loading. Seems like a backwards choice. No excuse for the wording change imo.

Didn't think of it that way. Makes perfect sense, thanks.
Does not make sense! Not to me at least! >_<

The best is when you hit power and it doesn't even turn off. Instead you get three beeps and god knows what is happening.

I keep my BR remote in a caddy with my other (many and varied) AV remotes; if I bump it, my PS3 turns on. How do I know? It beeps. It's handy, and it alerts me to the fact that I need to turn it off again.

That happens to me and alerts me to how stupid the remote control is.
