I find the beep kinda cute but is misguided and unnecessary now on Slim, where there are actual buttons. They should have at the very least used some softer, quieter sound, but ideally it should just not be there for regular power on/off functions, and just be relegated to warnings.
I can help you with that at least - just make sure the physical switch on the phone is set to silent mode when you're plugging it. Then when you unplug it switch back to audible mode.
Well, I turn PS3 on only few times a month, why should it be on standby?

Sure it beeps, and will beep like what, 3 times if you try to turn it off and it has a problem, but it isn't that bad, talk about being overly nit picky.

Yes, PS3. I want to turn the system off. If you put a power button on this remote like a normal human remote control, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
I can clearly hear it all the way downstairs, so I'm sure the gf can hear it 15 feet away in the bedroom.

You can avoid the beep by shutting it down with the controller.
I sold my PS3 and stopped videogaming because of that.

I hate/love my remote.
It is sensitive as all hell. I have to hold it like a Father holding a baby up high in sky so I don't turn it on by accident when I am just moving my remotes to the side.
The functions are great, I control my ps3 and tv but also use third option to control my AppleTV.
My biggest gripe though is that it is not usb chargeable, I hate battery operated devices.
When they made the slim, they probably went like "ok, if we remove the beep, it doesn't sound as much as a PS3". Or something.
Does the button have 2 fonctions? If you hold it longer does the PS3 turn on but resetted? (I dunno 'cause I don't have a slim)

We aren't talking about a button that opens the door, we are talking about an XMB command that would have to be used before the door would open.
Atleast, that's what I was talking about.

The beep is pretty loud, dude.
It's funny because the system is capable of turning on without the beep. When you use automatic updates, for example.
It definitely should be an option in the firmware to turn off that sound.
It might also be used as code to tell techs it is operating correctly, just like computers. I think some motherboards beep when going through POST, and if it fails you get a beeping code to tell you what went wrong.
Might be why you get 3 beeps if the PS3 locks up and you have to force shut it down.

I doubt it would be an XMB command only. More than likely there would be a physical eject button to accompany it.

Then we are back to the question, what does the XMB command do? Does it pop the door open? Seems pretty useless considering you have to walk over to it to get the disc out anyway.
Of course, the eject XMB command on the prettier PS3's is also pretty useless for the same reason.

Like Solstice said, I very much doubt that is how it is going to work.
Considering the firmware changes we already had leading up to this discovery, it will probably work the same way as it is now, you can either press the eject button on the front or the remove disc option just like it does now, but obviously it will unlock whatever mechanism they have holding it closed instead of feeding it out.

Very likely, unless it slides, at which point it will probably just unlock and stop the disc and expect you to open it yourself.
We will find out soon enough either way, lol, GamesCom can't get here soon enough, problem with all these leaks is not knowing how things are going to work.

i have a 60GB fat ps3, so it has touch sensitive controls for power/reset and eject. the beeps are necessary because it gives me audible feedback on what its doing (is it ejecting a disc? powering on/off? error?).
You can turn off the clicky noises in the XMB an stuff so why not the startup sound? Besides the system gives you an audio cue when turning it on aside from the beep. The sound of its engine revving up and soon to be released hot air!
I'm thinking of it like in movies an such. "Hit the eject button!" often what happens first is something opens up then the things ejected. So maybe the disc won't go flying out but the top will pop making it sorta the same principle.
Or this but that would be pretty dumb to not have it pop it open!
Thats just way to convoluted. How many people even know about the triangle menu to begin with? People even on GAF don't know they can turn off that defaut to "what's new" section x.x
Whys the disc need to be stopped all of a sudden? Plenty of consoles have been top loading. An plenty of times I've hit the eject button without powering 'em off/resetting to swap games or simply get back to the system menu to check memory cards. If this really is the case then its just like I said, sony likes needlessly changing stuffs.
The PS3 is not a microwave.
That explains why these noodles are taking so long.
The Mac beeps you can silence in sound prefs or the keyboard button. To disable the beep on the phone itself just flip the switch on the side to mute the whole phone. (it will post likely just vibrate when it connects to the Mac instead of beeping)

I may need someone to confirm this as I live in the UK, but as far as I know people in the US cannot turn off the ticker, only the launch menu. In the UK we can swtich off both.

Ya I was talking about the launch menu. Someone in another thread was like "ps3 don't even default to the games category at boot!" an people were like "um there is an option for that". As for the ticker thats there to stay an have its rectangular outline burned into your tv screen! Although I did once read if you start the system without an internet connection it'll not show up, or set your system date ahead/behind that would also get you tickerless but I never tried.
