Why doesn't anybody care about Tearaway?

For me it fails for the same reason LBP fails. Incredibly creative style and mechanics that are a bore to look at thanks to the horribly desaturated colors and obnoxious cut scenes.

If either game had a more vibrant colors palette they would be much more enjoyable.

I picked this up when it was $20 last month and beat it. The last third of the game was great but it takes too long to get there. Also, the camera in this game is fucking atrocious. You'll be fighting it all game long. If you can get past that, there's some great platforming towards the end of the game.

I played it on Vita and it was great. I don't think it's a Nintendo-tier platformer or anything, but as a fan of the genre it's always cool to see more of these types of games.

here are my thoughts from the other thread telling people to buy it

i heard people raving about this game on vita and i finally caved last year when it was like $15. i played through the whole game, which had some cool moments, but i largely did not like it all that much. if you're into art and crafting things, the game will probably be awesome for you. it's got a lot of really cool looking environments, character designs, and art direction. but as a game, that is, basically a platformer with some light combat, it's awfully weak. the platforming is not very challenging at all, and the enemy encouters largely repeat themselves over and over. the ps4 version does some new things (like throwing objects towards the screen before launching them back), but probably not enough to change my opinion on it.

so if you like the art direction, you like creating things with (digital) paper, some cool music and fun moments. this game is for you. If you want a challenging 3D platformer and don't care about taking selfies within a game world, you probably won't like this

i don't mean to come in here and shit on the parade or anything, but when you're telling people to simply run out and spend $20 on something, they should hear alternate points of view

it's just not a very good platformer all around. if you were to take that art style and make a truly challenging platfomer, i'd totally be onboard

As someone who loved the game on the Vita, I will admit it is based on the charm and aesthetics rather than the gameplay. I will however, buy this game now it is on sale.

I really love the aesthetics of this game. Playing with the camera and filters are fun. The world is ripe with creativity and the art direction is great. Really like it so far but the moment to moment gameplay is a bit of a rut.

I dont like creative games that let me play with my imagination and whatnot.

I want to shoot, stab, punch, smash shit all over the place.

Does this game have parries? Just defends? can I use my meter for a special finishing move? Is there an infinite climax difficulty?

It was the worst selling bundle of the PS4 Christmas campaign in the store I was (PS4 with Tearaway and Lego Jurassic World) even coupled with Fallout 4 and PES2016 extra. People do not dig the game at all and even kids scoff at the game.

That generally describes Media Molecule's output, IMO. Their games are well-made, but just not juicy with a fun, kinesthetic loop of activity and feedback, but checks off so many superficial boxes outside of gameplay control and its feel all the same. My brother called their games "great looking turkey, but dry as yarn and construction paper when you sink your teeth into them."

I enjoyed Tearaway on Vita, clicked with it instantly where as I never liked LBP. My other half is quite arty/crafty and even she thought it was adorable looking game. I liked that it brought a lot of the origami onto the real world with downloadable papercraft. I wish there were more of this - I must just be in a minority.

I bought the vita game on day one. It was adorable but i didnt actually enjoy playing it much. I think about 2-3 hours havent put the cart back in yet

Loved it on the vita but ps4 demo didn't click with me, and was missing the key vita elements of your face in the sun on a live stream!

Honestly thought I was the only person who felt this game was...not good. Even the aesthetic didn't appeal to me. As some others have said, it felt purposefully artsy and therefore insincere to me.

Then again, there has yet to be a Media Molecule game I've enjoyed.

Which is strange, I love love love platformers. Ori, DK:TF, Mario Maker...just never Media Molecule's output.

Are we talking about the same Tearaway?

Played it on Vita, but honestly the game is not very fun. It is pretty, charming, but once you finish it, why would you even come back to it ? Definitely not for me.

When I want to play video-games, I am looking for actual games. Which games like Tearaway are not by my standarts.

It's more charming than it is good.

It's good, it just isn't good in the way people wanted it to be. Little Big Planet was just the same in that people wanted it to be straight-up platformer, while the creators wanted it to be something different.

People wanted Tearaway to be a straight-up 3D platformer, and it turned out not to be that.

There's plenty of "game" in Tearaway, it just isn't always traditional platforming. A lot of the gameplay involves environmental puzzles or novel methods of traversal.

I played the demo and while it was cute and charming, I didn't find it very fun to actually play. I think the demo consisted of two chapters, and I didn't even bother to play the second one.

Bought and loved the vita version, but Dont have the time or feel like doing it all again on ps4 to be honest...

Problem is that the entire game feels like a walk in a parc. If there isn't any kind of challenge/skill involved, I just can't have any fun.

I have the vita version and I love platformers, but Tearaway just didn't resonate with me. It's charming and beautiful an everything, but I just couldn't bring myself to finish it - and I have tried multiple times. It's nice to look at but it's just too boring for an adult.

Turns out Sony fans don't like platformers?

I mean you see the constant arguments that Nintendo's platformers should be priced at "downloadable" prices or $20 or something.

And that's a totally fair position to take. If challenge is what you like in games, Tearaway probably isn't the game for you.

It did exactly as well as it deserved.

I wish that when people say stuff like this they could imagine themselves saying it to the developers. "Hey guys, you know that beautiful, creative, critically acclaimed game you made? That deserved to fail. Your work didn't deserve success."

Jesus christ.

I wonder if those arguments are by the same people who think Axiom Verge was too expensive at launch. My argument being, they think if a game isn't taxing the console, or doesn't look AAA, it isn't worth forking out good money for.

I have no idea what the last platformer I played before Tearaway (or even since Tearaway) was, and I am not a fan of MediaMolecule's previous works, but I gave Tearaway on Vita a chance and I loved it.

I bought the retail copy at full price.

I'm just too preoccupied with Fallout 4 at the moment. I'll find the time for it eventually though.

It's a fantastic game and probably in my top five for the year. I find it sad that creative and unique games like this aren't more popular.

It launched on a 'dead' system with little marketing, and proceeded to release it again on the best selling console of the generation, without all the charming full gameplay elements that made it what it was originally, to an audience that isn't necessarily the target and who barely was marketed to once again.

As much as I love the game (as does my wife and her young siblings), it really isn't surprising at the lack of fanfare and movement.

Very overrated. It looks like a game hipsters think children should enjoy. But it's neither a game for children not adults. It has no clear audience and I think that's reflected in the gameplay, which splits the difference on a bunch of ideas and ends up nowhere as a result.

The original Vita game is so much more conceptually and mechanically realized, and moving... even with the new areas and sharper visuals, Unfolded just seems aimless and somber by comparison. It's like porting an elaborate arcade machine to a home system and losing most of what made it. I still like it and appreciate that there's such wildly different versions, but I can't help comparing them.

Tearaway is really just more of an adventure game than a platformer. It's sad that it flopped again, but I guess people just don't want it.

Looks nice but just not into cutesy 3d platformers anymore.
I tried on vita mainly for the interesting touch controls but it just didn't grab me.

MM games always look interesting to me but never really deliver on gameplay.

Don't forget to ask the same question for Puppeteer and, in a extent, Gravity Rush ;_;

Unfortunately, PlayStation audience has a thing to snub some of the better exclusives on their platform, especially if they are from Sony. I don't know if those games would do so much better on a Nintendo platform, but there is certainly a lack of love for platformers on PlayStation.

With that being said, while I bought Tearaway on Vita, I have to admit I dont have it yet on PS4. August would have been a better release window. Gravity Rush Remastered will be day 1, though.

I ended up pre-ordering the Vita bundle as it was time to get a Vita and there were some good offers for it, it looked like an alright game.

It's really charming, but with no challenge or any attachment to the characters, getting bored of making paper crafts and feeling like I was just playing it because it was there, I got bored very quickly. Always felt like a huge missed opportunity.
