Why doesn't the Xbox One controller have a share button yet?

This is something that's baffled me the more I think about it. Among other things, I feel like one big thing that helped Sony gain mind share early in this generation was #PS4Share. My twitter feed was, and, still is, flooded with shared pictures and videos from my pals.

Double-tapping the home button and hitting X or Y just doesn't cut it. Sure, it's better than nothing, but, it just doesn't feel as natural as hitting one button, and, it still interrupts the game. Also, it might just be that I have less friends on Xbox One, but, I almost never see anyone share pictures or videos from it.

Is this a patent issue or something? MS has put so much focus on their controllers recently, especially with regards to the Design Lab. So, why isn't there a share button on the damn thing, yet?

I think the tapping home once works fine for now, or whatever it is. Dedicated capture/screenshot buttons would be nice though but I'm not sure where I'd put them on the current controller without making it awkward to press.

I'm not really sure it's an issue, it's currently two button presses instead of one.

Press the guide button then x to record or y for screenshot.

Either I'm missing something or OP hasn't used an Xbox in quite some time. Right now it's two button presses, once for the guide and once more to save a screenshot or recording.

I've been playing my PS4 the last few nights and it's almost the exact same setup... Press the share button, then hit triangle or square to save a screenshot or recording. The main advantage seems to be having the option to "share" without saving first. For me personally, I'm just saving screenshots so the # of steps are the same.

Ah, I guess that shows I haven't tried to share anything in a while on Xbox, that I didn't even know they changed it to just one press of the home button.

Regardless, having to hit the home button at all is less intuitive and still interrupts the game, but, it's nice they changed it.

There's a "guide" the slides in from the left-hand side of the screen when you tap the "home" button. It's no more intrusive than the "share" interface that slides in on the PS4...

I prefer being able to hit the screenshot button and have no interruptions, then come back later and share. I know it's a matter of seconds that it saves, but, it's still an issue that could be solved with an extra share button.

A dedicated button is brilliant idea, but it gave kinect something to do. MS messed up on that one. You can bet it will be on the neXt box controller.

On ps4 you can double tap for a screenshot or hold it to start recording video without leaving the game.

You just changed my goddamn life friend. Whilst playing Lost Legacy, I hit the share button and wait a few seconds for that damn interface to load every time. This revelation will actually save me at least a few minutes per night. Not being sarcastic here, I'm pretty damn happy about that.

Since Xbox changed the guide to open with single tap of the home button and GREATLY improved the speed of the guide opening so that it is instant, I have not wanted a dedicated share button.

It's so simple.

Fuck the Share button on my PS4.
Do you know how many times I've selected that stupid thing because 30+ years of console gaming has created unbreakable muscle memory that the button where Share resides is called "Select"?

I hope Sony makes a proper select button with the PS5 and dumps the share button, or moves it somewhere my brain won't let me hit it on accident.

Because it's not needed. I prefer Microsoft's solution. It's quick enough. I don't care about sharing to facebook or twitter. I just like seeing what my other xbox friends are up to.

This confuses me. You're obviously not alone (someone else in this very thread mentioned accidentally hitting it) but, how is this happening?

There hasn't been a single game this entire generation that says "press select" anywhere. Also, no select button has ever been that high on a controller.

I'm not suggesting you guys are lying, it just...doesn't register to me at all to ever hit that button unless I want to share something, and, I'm an old fart like the rest of yous.

Man... now I really just feel like an idiot for not playing around with the settings. Methinks I need to do that tonight.

It's awesome. Single press and a screenshot is saved without anything whatsoever appearing on screen.

Change to 'easy screenshots' in the sharing settings. Turn off the notification in the notifications part of general settings.

The Xbox One Chatpad has 2 keys that can be configured to be screenshot or video capture buttons.

The problem is some games pause the game when you hit the guide. So when you try to do it with button presses, you will be taking a screenshot of a pause menu. It’s also very laggy sometimes.

Xbox still has a "Select" button.
I do a lot of gaming on the Xbox, and lots of Xbox games (like Destiny) have liberal use of the select button.
It doesn't matter if it's so high up on the PS4 pad, because the start button (on the opposite side) is just as high up.
It's really problematic when I'm juggling several games across both systems in a short period of time... Like when I did Dark Souls 2 on XOne right before Bloodborne on PS4.

As stated above: because it resides in the spot traditionally reserved for the Select button resulting in unwanted videos and screenshots.

Don't press it then unless you want a screenshot/video. It's pretty simple really. The select button is replaced by pressing the touchpad.

It's a handy button to have to quickly be able to capture something without having to leave the game at all.

I know how it works.
I know why it's convenient.
I know not to press it, ever, but it's just where my thumb goes by default because it's opposite of the start button. That's always where select is (traditionally).

I like the theory of the share button, I just wish it was somewhere else.

I could do without the touchpad button though. That is just never going to feel natural.

I dont really like the location of it. Its too close to the touchpad. Accidental clicks happen a lot. The functionality isnt bad.

I respectfully disagree.

I can pretty much hit it mid combo without breaking my stride which adds a lot to its functionality imo.

I think in the next iteration of the Xbox controller they should make a small button for screen shots/clips. Make it mirror the sync button, same size and placement just on the opposite side.

If your brain is still hitting select when games only ever prompted you to press select in the past you might need a new brain.

You only ever pressed select when the screen had the message "press select". I find it hard to believe your pressing the share button thinking it's select when no game has prompted you to do that for the last 5 years.

Yeah the touchpad wasn't a good idea since day one it's just an annoyance. I also feel like PS Share could have just been 2 buttons one being the PS button and the one under it the share button.

Instead of putting it right where select should have been.

Pressing the home button once takes a screen shot. Works very well.

Some people argue that with a dedicated screen shot button you can take multiple screen shots (which is true) but honestly, that's more useful during cut scenes or really slow paced games. I can't imagine pressing the button for multiple screen shots AND have decent control of a game (racing, shooters etc...)

I don't think it needs it. I have Kinect so I can just do the voice command. If you want one button press you could get a chat pad as that has a dedicated button on it. Pressing two buttons isn't a big deal, that's how many button presses it takes on PS4 Pro as well.

Funny "friend of friend" story incoming....

Good friend of mine is/was friends with some people who were on the Xbox Live team prior to Xbox One Launch in 2013. He went to lunch with a group of them a couple weeks after the PS4 unveil (And before the Xbox One unveil). Conversation turned to the "Share" button and my friend told me that they all were very cold on the idea and scoffed at it. Said it didn't make sense, and that nobody would use it, "Why would you want a button to share screen shots?" type comments, etc. So there's a chance that internally they didn't anticipate it's popularity. Obviously it turned into something great, and they ended up adding the feature a year or so later due to it's popularity on PS4. (And Switch now too)

But it always cracks me up anytime someone mentions the share button and why MS doesn't have one. I think it is also a reminder of just how out of touch they were with what gamers wanted at the time from the Xbox One.
They have come a long ways.

I do find it annoying how much of a pain in the ass sharing is on Xbox One compared to PS4.

First even with the new update to the guide. It's easiest to have a kinect just for "Record That" or Take a Screenshot". After that unless i''m missing something you either have to

Go to your feed, find the clip you just made. Go to upload studio, edit it, and then find the newly made clip on your feed and then you can share it to twitter. Pics work the same way.

Instead of wasting time on making the main menu of Xbox changed half a dozen times. They should be putting more work into letting users share their experiences as easily as they can on PS4.

Hell it's easier to share just screenshots on the damn switch than it is on Xbox.

Might be able to put it on the other side of the sync button.

Depends what you're trying to do.

I have taken some amazing(really amazing) screenshots in Destiny.

When you go from the menu back to the game there's a fraction of a second before the HUD comes back on. That's the way to get great screenshots. Instant single press would be the only way for that to work.

As I'm learning with MvC:I, muscle memory is a bitch.
I can do dragon punch motions all day long from YEARS of fighting game play.
MvC:I ditched dragon punch motions (AKA Z-motion AKA SRK) for down down. My brain cannot wrap it's head around this.

Same thing with share/select.
Certainly when you play two games of the same series on two consoles and one console has a superior input method traditionally known as a "select" button, and the other has an inferior input method known as a "mushy two button touch pad", it's a problem.

In fairness I thought it was a terrible idea when I first heard about it too.

Yeah Microsoft was very out of touch with that people who buy gaming consoles. I mean they tried to kill the used game market with the always online. With everyone using Instagram Facebook twitter tumblr etc it’s a no brainer that people would latch on to the share button feature on a console.
