Why doesn't the Xbox One controller have a share button yet?

It's not in the same spot.

Is the Share button on the exact opposite side of the PS4 pad from the Options (Start) button (where a traditional select button would reside)?

If you press on the general area of where you'd expect a select button be on a controller, would your finger come close to "accidentally" pressing the share button?

I do find it annoying how much of a pain in the ass sharing is on Xbox One compared to PS4.

First even with the new update to the guide. It's easiest to have a kinect just for "Record That" or Take a Screenshot". After that unless i''m missing something you either have to

Go to your feed, find the clip you just made. Go to upload studio, edit it, and then find the newly made clip on your feed and then you can share it to twitter. Pics work the same way.

Instead of wasting time on making the main menu of Xbox changed half a dozen times. They should be putting more work into letting users share their experiences as easily as they can on PS4.

Hell it's easier to share just screenshots on the damn switch than it is on Xbox.

As far as screen shots you just hit the guide button, go to "recent captures" and share? How hard is that?

No: but by that logic I wouldn't be able to find the Start (Options) button since it would therefore not be in the traditional location.

The PS4 pad is just wrong. All sorts of wrong. In my opinion of course.
I mean, it's way better than the DS3... But it's just not as familiar and comfortable as an XOne pad.

As I'm learning with MvC:I, muscle memory is a bitch.
I can do dragon punch motions all day long from YEARS of fighting game play.
MvC:I ditched dragon punch motions (AKA Z-motion AKA SRK) for down down. My brain cannot wrap it's head around this.

Same thing with share/select.
Certainly when you play two games of the same series on two consoles and one console has a superior input method traditionally known as a "select" button, and the other has an inferior input method known as a "mushy two button touch pad", it's a problem.

Your muscle memory might need to remember better

But the Options (Start) button is used ALL the time on PS4. My brain knows where that is, and somewhere in the unconscious portions of my brain, it has mapped select to the opposite side of the controller... Because that's where it goes.

Not on one side of a touch pad.

Maybe cause they were pushing hard on Kinect and voice commands when they introduced the Xone. I wish they had kept expanding that aspect considering the success of Alexa and other smart home type devices.

Would love them to add one. The issue with the share button isn't the share button, it's that the options button has the same recessed, uncomfortable layout. The touchpad shoving the start button into a 'you should not hit this button' position is a travesty, but for the share button? It's perfect.

The only way you accidentily press that button is simply by forgetting that that's what it does, which is more an issue with not using the controller enough than anything else. You could replace the touch pad with a normal start/select button layout and it wouldn't affect the Share button one bit, THAT would be my ultimate setup.

Since Xbox changed the guide to open with single tap of the home button and GREATLY improved the speed of the guide opening so that it is instant, I have not wanted a dedicated share button.
X for video
Y for screenshot.
It's so simple.

Fuck the Share button on my PS4.
Do you know how many times I've selected that stupid thing because 30+ of console gaming has created unbreakable muscle memory that the button where Share resides is called "Select"?

First, I'd like to say that while it's "easier than it used to be" it still sucks to have the pause menu come up sometimes. We can blame the games but in reality just having a dedicated button is better.
Secondly...
I whole heartedly share your frustration with the PS4! Holy fuck! What a terrible place to have that button in my opinion. The idea of the button, great! Execution, garbage! And no, I shouldn't HAVE to relearn a concept that's as ingrained in us as Mario is to our family!

Agreed.

What's even worse than the DS4 pad though with regards to Share functionality?

Hori, what are you doing? D:

So... many... accidental SFV videos...
Again... I don't want people to think I don't like the concept of a share button.
I just want it someplace NOT opposite of Options (Start).

I don't mind it requiring you to go to the Guide to record or screenshot something. I don't care about recording and capturing screens of games I play. If there is a button on the controller, I would prefer if being there for some kind of game-playing utility. I get that screenshots and recordings are important to some people though, so luckily they have a "guide button + x/y" option available to them.

I'd love a better video editor than a share button, tbh. It's the option I miss the most from my PS4.
Yes, video editor on Xbox is so bad. Can't even do quick snips, music or slow motion.

I really hope we get a new upload studio.

Agreed.

Change it to easy screenshots and turn off notifications. Then batch delete them afterwards. At least screenshots take up less space.

Yeah sucks. Especially once the one X releases and the IQ is up to snuff.

Rarely if ever take screens on my One because of this oversight.

bc it doesnt need it. X or Y on the Guide is perfect. Share button is just taking up more real estate on controller, something the DS4 has little of already with the huge touchpad taking up 90% of the controller's face.

The problem is some games pause the game when you hit the guide. So when you try to do it with button presses, you will be taking a screenshot of a pause menu. It’s also very laggy sometimes.

This actually isn't true. When you select "save screenshot" it saves the image that was displayed the moment you press the guide button, not when you press the screenshot prompt.

I don't see the necessity of a dedicated button, as long as it's clear how to take a screen shot or video and share it. The PS4 setup was extremely annoying at the start. The default shouldn't have loaded up the UI to share, with a tap. So many times I accidentally hit that thing and the UI popped up. Once I switched it to hold to open the UI, it was much better, though I still get random screen shots of shit because I bump it.

I'd rather they didn't. 4 years later and I still accidentally hit that Share button on PS4 way more often than I should.

This thread makes me so happy to know I'm not the only one... And I'm not alone in my frustration with the placement of the Share button...

DS5, does Sony double down on the touchpad, or do they get rid of that rarely used gimick to give us a proper start and select button in the correct locations and a share button somewhere else?

I like the big button in the middle part of it but yeah, touch pad side of it really sucked.

The only time I can think of it being used well was for the brilliant shortcuts in Witcher 3.

Edit : I presume they'll keep it in some way for backwards compatibility.

Trust me, you're not the only one. Heaven knows how many times I've tried to do an in game action only to pull up that stupid share interface.

I'm glad the Xbox controller doesn't have it.

2017 and people are pressing share button thinking it's the select button?...a button that no longer exists on a modern home console.

Uh, the only system without that button (or a button with a different name that serves the same function) is the PS4. Even your avatar's system has it.

I play with a chat pad which has the dedicated button, but I always just use Kinect.

I disabled Cortana so my voice commands are still fast and work great.

It really doesn't need it. Your information (or your friends) are oddly out of date.

For some time now, pressing the Guide button once (which acts as a "foot in the door" for the screen-cap or start of the video capture segment for when you pressed it) followed by either X or Y (for video clip or screen-cap) gets the job done. Just in terms of the execution, the new dashboard also lets you do full 1080p video captures, and you've been able to choose the duration of retroactive video capture with one additional button press for a few revisions now. That chat-pad also has dedicated buttons for both video or screen-cap, and you also have the option of various voice prompts (through either headset or Kinect). I don't think there's any problem with a dedicated button, but I haven't encountered a better solution using a dedicated button.

The Switch has no Select button.
There is + and -

I don't think the xbox one controller has one either, at least not called that way
Yeah I know you specified but still :p

Start and Select don't exist in name, but they certainly exist in terms of function on both current gen console controllers...

XOne has Menu (start) and View (select) both of which aren't even named but represented as a hamburger menu icon and some kind of square icon.

And DS4 has Options (Start) and left side of mushy touch pad button (select)...

So yeah, you're technically correct nothing is named "select"... But the idea of a non-action button for menu/map type functionality still exists on all modern consoles.

Even worse imo Xbox pics and video you have to open a link on Twitter. May not sound like much but I rarely open the link. Ps4 Pics and Videos open right on Twitter.

In terms of the Twitter implementation, I 100% agree. But you can grab native files through sites like XboxDVR.com or through your own Onedrive directory, and I prefer that to Twitter compression or needing a physical flash-drive to get those files off the PS4.

I think both of them have great solutions for quick sharing.

The DS4 has a dedicated share button which brings up an interface on a single press, screenshots on a double press and records on hold.

The Xbox One Controller has a home button that brings up sidebar, where pressing X records and Y screenshots.

I don't think the Xbox One needs a share button since their sharing solution works just as well as PS4s, but on the topic of controllers I wish the PS4 had a regular select button because I keep pressing the Share Button when I'd press Select on PC/PS3 (when playing FF14, in which clicking the Touchpad = Select). However that's just wishful thinking on my part, and hardly a necessity since to be honest the DS4 is completely fine without it and the Share Button is a great idea.

It takes a picture of what was on the screen when you pressed the guide button if I'm not mistaken.

Gamers don't know what they want sometimes. Alot of crying about the Kinect made MS back track. It definitely was an awesome feature and set itself apart from the PS4 and PC crowd.

If the Kinect was fully fleshed out to be a fully featured addition to the Xbox experience you wouldn't hear/read things like "why do I need an Xbox again?!" Post that come up here.
