Why Girls Love The Dad Bod

Yeah you have some pent up issues that I can't help you with.

My issue is largely with elitism and snobbery. you seem to think that lifting for mass is the only valid form of gym activity, and you seem to paint it as a moral pursuit that others are morally wrong for not pursuing or caring about.

Well you and I are clearly at different stages of life. My friends and I are recent college grads with lots of free time. I don't think it's worth arguing this any further when we come from completely different places.
Fair enough but if all of you have plenty of spare time why do the non gym friends always decided to get together right when the other friends workout?

I have a friend who has a dad bod and he's been working out to try to be more appealing to women. Maybe I'll show him this.

But then again, he's so insecure that he'd feel insulted if he knew I thought he was rocking a dad bod.

I'm not knocking anyone. It's called Body Dysmorphic Disorder and it's a very real thing. Nowhere did I say that all "swole" people have this nor did I say they were mentally unwell. Some people, like you and my coworker (which is why I mentioned him in the first place, he'll read this), just want to be healthy. More. Power. To. You. He hates working out but he does it because he doesn't want to be a fat schlub. Or have a dadbod.

Also, you're the one that said that

"Working out for size" is where I took that from. I'm not swole (or fit), my husbands definitely not swole (or fit), and we're still successful. Both of us are the most successful in our family. Hence my response. Although I do apologize for being snarky, I will yank back my snark.

You don't have to be, but it helps. For the many reasons I've listed. I personally am attracted to all types and sizes of women, specially girls who have a bit more to love, but I myself try to be as fit as possible. For myself and for the lady in my life. What matters is that you are happy, if not do whatever it takes

Not everyone finds huge muscles attractive. Looking good for men, in my opinion, is how they dress and also largely in the face. I don't care about bodies and don't factor them into how attractive I judge men.

Also you don't need to be massive to be healthy. People go to the gym and do cardio or lift for strength or don't focus on bulk.

This is how I am too. Their face is the biggest thing for me - I'm attracted to a slightly round (chubby) fuzzy-to-bearded face. Everything else tends to fall in line with what I like after that. Most of the time they have dadbod, sometimes they're skinnyfat. Either way, they're always carrying a bit of extra weight.

And the meathead comment and obsesed with their body comment doesn't sit well with people who workout. Heads up. Might want to try to lose the negative judgements in the future.

I said there are more benefits, I didn't say it was a prerequisite or required... Lifting for size is best if you can actually attain size, if you are comfortable where you are at, then that's okay too. You can work out however you want as long as it isn't crossfit.

A fair question, but no more valid than "why do they always work out when it's prime for us to hang out?"

In general, I'd say making a compromise is best, that we should adjust some of the time and they should adjust some of the time, but that's a harder position to take when they're in the minority.

Okay, but suppose you're me who doesn't want to work out. No, I wouldn't want them to wish they were working out. I don't see the point. I'm perfectly capable of making friends with people who aren't obsessed with their bodies. I'll let the meatheads congregate as they wish and I'll continue to make other friends.

Just dont hate them for what they are passionate about in your disagreement... That isn't adult. People grow apart too you know

I hope the best for you...

But your friends literally have a 1.5 hour period where they are unavailable. How hard is it to work around that? Now if your friends were hitting the gym at 10pm I would be totally behind you but my guess is they are going sometime around 4-6.

Smoking was "normal" for a long time, and so was the damage it did to people's bodies.

The normal body is unhealthy in America.

The processed food supply is unhealthy and addictive, much like cigarettes.

I respect that. But you have to respect that not everyone targets the same balance.

I do. People are free to live their lives as they see fit. I don't think anyone is a bad person for being overweight. I don't want them to feel bad. I want them to make sure their decision is an informed one.

The problem I have with many body acceptance movements is that they can hide or outright deny the truth.

Monday is national chest day, and Wednesday is leg day. Every week...

And this is my attempt at a joke lol

Do you want less vaginal success?
lmao. i've been with my girl for 10+ years. couldn't care less about what other girls think. but i've been getting soft. gotta fix that. more for me than anyone else. health first; looks and confidence are secondary and tertiary benefits.

Are you trying to say that we shouldn't be allowed to hang out in that 1.5 hour period? That because two of my friends are working out that the rest of us should put our plans on hold for them? Because I don't like the sound of that.

FWIW, they normally hit the gym between 8 and 11, with between 8 and 10 being ideal.

I appreciate your position on this. Regardless of what's en vogue and desirable, people should know what's physically healthy and where to draw good boundaries.

This. Also skinny fat isn't safe, look up fatty liver disease and visceral fat in the body. I worry for the health of people who get caught up in the fitfatwars

Shitty attitude is shitty.

If they are going that late everyday then I'll actually side with you on this. They could easily go earlier to clear up time for a night life with friends. Sounds like these two people and your group of friends are growing apart and they are using the gym as a polite (and cowardly) way to decline your invitations.

Name calling isn't really needed at all.

So you don't have an argument, just hypocritical tone policing?

Probably. I just don't understand it. They're perfectly entitled to their decisions, but some of their decisions make it harder to socialize with them.

They could just be more about their gains. But you could replace them with anything, they are just busy doing x. You know? I built a home gym for me and my friends, but they are the ones who flake on me, I end up lifting alone, which is okay too.

You called people who go to the gym meatheads and said they were obsessed with their bodies. People take offense to that man.

Good luck with the friends. Probably for the beat anyway.

I'm sorry. I meant no offense, but I can see now that it was insensitive. I'll not use that term again.

You are comfortable with yourself, that's great. But being healthy is more than just being able to run and not having excess fat. Also you have never needed to look good? I'm going to assume you are exuding business type situations, looking good is almost as important as knowing how to speak publicly. You need to be able to present yourself well and look good doing it, these are just basic life skills. Going the extra mile to be attractive is another thing too, but the benefits are worth the constant work, plus you age slower.

Being presentable is important but I have never had anyone ask me to take off my shirt and show them how ripped I am in a business meeting. Hence the law of diminishing returns. If your a public personality your looks are going to take you a little farther but still not going to take you any further than a guy that has more talent, brains and personality. How old you look is based on your genetics and living conditions. You really are fooling yourself if you think working out and dolling yourself up in front of the mirror is actually going to make you look younger. Dude put down the cosmo.

Wow it's rare to see anyone appologize on gaf, you will be fine. I doubt she called her friends meatheads to their faces. Friends can be frustrating when they are not around, I know that myself.

Reminds me of my old job at PC World. Our only female technician made a comment about how hot the customer outside the tech area that I had just been talking to was.

She was rather embarrassed when I pointed out that man was my 50 year old father.

I done, you have completely warped what I said, who ever said anything about dolling up anything?

If you think working out and building a good frame of muscle won't have returns in age then I'd ask you to google some older body builders or trainers. Genetics play a huge role, but how you handle your body plays a bigger one

Main reason why I don't smoke or drink, I limit my sweets too. So many things age the body, it isn't an interesting thing to people, people don't care, I do.

my wife definitely does not want to see a dad bod. sounds like chix with insecurity issues (I want to be the attractive one... what?)

Yeah there's got to be something wrong with them right? Because it's not a demonstrable cultural norm or anything.

That must be it. There's something wrong with them.

Yo gym bros, chill the fuck out. Your position of aesthetic and disciplinary superiority ain't being threatened. Why, whenever a concept like this gets some press to you come flying out of the woodwork shouting muscle shaming and proclaiming that everyone else is just an insecure weakling?

Come on dude, most old body builders are dead or look like shit because they have zipper scars. Old body builders look completely fucked, even the celebrity ones with all the money and surgery still look like ass. Once you hit a point its all down hill from there and the gym is not going to change that for anyone.

I'm not a gym rat or anything, but I work out consistently every single week. My girlfriend doesnt exercise, and this has created some issues between us. It's hard accommodating someone else's more sedentary lifestyle when you yourself are very active. Several nights I've had to leave her place at midnight to go workout because I stayed over too long out of guilt and missed my usual training time. All it does is make me grumpy as hell and resentful.

Gotta figure out how to make it work.

You can't expect people to be in good health JUST because they body build, hell many actors get caught up on drugs, hell many drugs can mess up bodybuilders too. But there are some good cases. Don't kid yourself....

Why is lifting for size best, in your view? I prefer lifting for strength. I prefer being lean. Anything over 17" arms, and I'm not limber enough to shake behind my head, and that irks me. In fact, any size that interferes with flexibility I'd view as too much.

You are right my friend, I said that with the assumption that size does follow after strength is built. I'm not advocating professional bodybuilding, I'm just talking about natural body building with the drive to be healthy and strong, with great physical aesthetics

huh

yeah I'm still gonna try for those abs tho

Should be the drive, at least... you keep working at it. Most people mess up with the diet and not the training frequency, thus the end up giving up.

I simply don't care how I look as long as I'm reasonably healthy. Getting super muscley is hard work and takes time. Therefore, I don't do it. Working for me so far.

Honestly you claim that having muscles like those you just posted can help people see you as more attractive and get you ahead in the business world, but I don't find that much muscle aesthetically pleasing. Do you have any actual evidence, like a list of muscle:body fat ratio of the CEOs of the Fortune 500 companies?

But WHY do you keep insisting without any evidence that bulky as possible is the greatest from a physical aesthetics standpoint? Don't studies instead show that women prefer leaner builds?

Like this isn't aesthetically appealing to me:

What are you talking about? I posted photos of old body builders, did you even read the quote I was replying too?

EDIT: Now you are just trolling. Not even the old people I posted have ever been ( http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2010/356/9/7/muscle_man_by_n_o_n_a_m_e-d35ffbk.jpg) THAT BIG.

Im done.

Those people either have a genetic predisposition or are getting help from a vial. There is no way your average guy is going to be able to naturally look like that at that age and I don't care how hard they hit the gym. There will be very rare exceptions.
