Why haven't you bought a vita yet?

Is it the price on the vita system?
The high memory card prices for small size cards?
Is it because you think it lacks games?

Would you consider one? What can sony do to convince you to buy one?

Vita does not have any games that would lead me to even consider a purchase this year. That's not to say it doesn't have any games. P4, for example, is very nice, but I already have a perfectly good copy on PS2.

Vita might at some point in the future be an attractive proposition based on PS+ and PS4 connectivity, but I doubt I'll consider it then. I'm not dead set against it, but the truth is that I have extremely limited time and money to invest in gaming. A Vita would be a significant dent in a budget that's stretched thin by 3DS and PC titles -- one that I'm hoping will cover a PS4 or a Xbone at some point in the next few years. I'm not looking for a reason to buy a Vita--I'm thanking Sony for failing to give me one.

Now, if somehow a true Suikoden successor emerged on Vita, then I would start thinking about bargain shopping.

That's the thing though, when do you honestly have time to play anything more than 5 minute time wasters on the go?

Flights, commutes, lunch breaks stuff like that. When my fiance wants to use the mounted tv and I dont want to watch the other. Standing in line type stuff, I get the phone thing totally.

Too many port not enough originality?

These for me.

I love Persona 4 and not being able to play Golden does suck, but beyond that there's really not much I want to play on the system. I mean, I'd try out Uncharted, Gravity Rush, and Wipeout but I'm not necessarily dying to play any of them. Tearaway is honestly the only game coming out on it which I am interested in, so that doesn't really give me any reason to buy one.

Is it the price on the vita system? - While it does make it difficult to buy it on a whim my answer would be no. I bought a 3DS for full price so I don't mind a high price tag if there is software I want.

The high memory card prices for small size cards? I tend to buy physical if given the option so this shouldn't be much of an issue for me but I must admit I loved the all digital nature of the pspGo despite how much software was unavailable for it. Considering how there is much to buy on the vita outside of the indie stuff it does become a small issue
Is it because you think it lacks games? - It lacks platform exclusive titles that I want to own. So far Gravity Daze is the only Vita exclusive game I have any interest in.

Too many port not enough originality? - It is hard to justify a purchase when the majority of games I have an interest in or available on the ps3. It just isn't worth putting down the money for me to purchase another console when I have a perfectly viable way to play them at home. I'm not lugging the vita with me so there really isn't a benefit to having them on the go.

Not enough ports? Can't think of any potential ports that would interest me.

Are you considering one but need that push? No. Aside from my issues with the library I'm not really fan of the device itself. I don't care for the buttons or sticks, especially the awful triggers, and It's too bulky. My hands are somewhat small so the thing is fairly unwieldy for me.

It basically comes down to the 3DS having the games I want while the vita just doesn't.

I mean, flights is really the only thing I could see it applying to me, but yeah I guess.

Lunch breaks I end up just talking to my co-workers, commutes - I drive to work so that wouldn't work. If I'm at home, I rather just play a proper console game.

When I was younger and I brought my Gameboy to stuff like afterschool, sure it totally worked. But now that I'm older, I just don't have the time to play it.

on a slightly different note, where the hell ARE all the 3rd party games on handhelds, period?

i haven't heard any new announcements for either vita or 3ds since the beginning of the year...

what the hell is SquareEnix, Namco, Sega, KT, konami (lol), doing?
handhelds have consistently dominated the japanese market and i have not heard of any new title announcements.

fucking ineptitude.

I got a Vita, but I also thought it would be some decent PSP-level of success. I consider it the greatest gaming dedicated hardware put together yet, so it definitely still works on that level.

But if I didn't, the arguments for why I didn't own one would be

-> Price ($250 for a gaming dedicated handheld is clearly too much for most people... even though to us gamers it seemed attractive given the power and features, but the mass market in general doesn't want to spend that much money for a device which exists pretty much to play games. Should be $179.99.
-> Proprietary Memory Cards (really, Sony? All these consumer friendly moves you're making with PS4... and you don't get that consumers want the ability to simply locate one of the many dozen of SD cards they probably having lying about their home and utilize it? Or, shit, PACK a goddamn memory card with the system!)
-> Lack of a Future (given how horrendous Vita is doing, I don't see it existing for very much longer as a platform with a healthy library. Unless something changes quick, things are going to get worse. They need a massive price cut and they need to call Jesus Christo and tell them to get Monster Hunter back for the platform somehow - how the fuck do you sleep on your ass with that one, Sony, after the heavy lifting it did for PSP in Japan?)
-> 3DS (right now, the system is taking off with its library right around the same time the Vita is fading out. Other than Tearaway and maybe one or two other games if I strain myself, there's virtually no exclusives of note for the system anymore that I can tell.)
I do wonder if the floodgates could burst open with some extreme price cutting. The system's nearing two and half years old and is using fairly orthodox mobile hardware, I'm sure they could do some huge cuts and try to blow the door open for the mass market, both on hardware (obviously) and memory cards (AT LEAST phase out 4 GB cards, price everything else down to the lower tier, then introduce 64 GB as the new $100 card. Still over priced, but not to the absurd degree it currently is, and paying 100 will actually get memory that lasts.)

Price of both the system and memory cards. I purchased a 32 GB SD card for $30 a few weeks back. Tripling that price for a Vita memory card is far too painful for my wallet, especially as my purchases are slowly becoming more and more digital.

The library is unappealing to me. I've never been a huge fan of Sony's first-party offerings, and the third-party selections that led me to purchase a PS1 and PS2 are either not there, or are franchises I've lost interest in since my childhood. The 3DS held familiar franchises I still enjoy, along with new series that seemed interesting to me. There isn't any real 'killer app' for either system, but SMT IV, alongside other 3DS SMT games, significantly sweetened the deal for me. Buying a Vita purely for P4G isn't an appealing offer.

Finally, as some other posters have mentioned, I don't feel confident enough in the Vita's future to purchase one. This year seems to be full of promises and little more, and heralding ports as the lifeblood of the system. All of it adds up to just making the Vita an unappealing handheld to me for the time being.

I really want one however a few things are holding me back.

  • Price for system and memory cards are way too high
  • There isn't a single game I feel like I can't live without
  • I already own a 3DS, don't play it a ton now and don't think I would play a Vita much more

The default price. Holy fuck. In a vacuum, it's great value for the tech jammed in there at its entry level non-sale price of ~$250 (source 1 and source 2).

However it doesn't exist in a vacuum, and the asking price of $250 right now is too much for the value on offer as far as I'm concerned. Every gaming device in my household already has too much to compete with for my time (PC, iDevice, LEGO, telescope, TV, any number of other activities, plain old internet browsing), so a new $250 device would have to be pretty fucking special to elbow its way to the top of those things which already exist.

A couple things could change my mind about that, regarding the Vita particularly. The first is a price drop, but that alone won't do it. If it drops to under $200 in the next month or two I'm still not going to run out and buy one. Same goes for the 3DSXL.

If, however, the PS4 comes out and the Vita is shown to be a must-have accessory (remote play, off-screen play, other additional control features or whatever) then hey, I'm interested at the current price, because suddenly the Vita isn't just a handheld gaming device.

I think maybe if they could make a PSP Vita revision with 4GB of memory already on board and AT LEAST a $199.99 price point, it might make it more attractive. But like Nintendo understands, you must also alter the value from a gaming perspective. What unique games is PSV offering in the near future that might make it a must-have in the eyes of consumers providing the system price wasn't a prohibitive factor?

I'm not sure I see what exists currently, other than Tearaway. And I'm not sure as to the market appeal of that, as lovely as it appears..

The only reason I buy systems is for exclusive games. There are very very few that interest me on the Vita. By the end of its life, I'm sure I'll own one, but the prospect of playing games I could be playing on my TV on a portable will never appeal to me.

It is too expensive given the number of games on it that interest me (around 2 or 3). I could get 2 or 3 3DS games that are in the 2nd tier of interest for me and end up better off. Sony could not interest me in one until I can pick it up used for under $50 with $5-10 games, like the PSP which I am somewhat interested in now.

System is too much, the price gouging on memory cards is disgusting, and there are very few games I care to play on it. Given the performance of the thing, it's going to be hard for sony to make me care and ever get one.

As a day 1 owner, I can't recommend it until they lower the price of memory cards. It's fucking highway robbery and ridiculous that they haven't.

It is the new proprietary memory card. When I have so many SD and Pro Duo cards it seems stupid to buy a new memory card. When the Vita was released I bought an Ipod touch 32GB for the same price, and I have no regrets.

Way too expensive, and a lack of third party support. If it were priced at $100-$150 with a memory card included, i wouldn't hesitate and buy one right now with persona 4 golden.

I've got one but I ignore it for 3DS games.

To be fair I ignore all my other consoles as well for 3DS games...and FF V this time of year. Bought a handful of Wii U games recently and haven't touched them. Have a backlog of Wii and a few things I want to finish up on the PS3 and can't get any of that done. 3DS is just right there with the games I want and it's going to continue doing so for the next few months at least.

SMT IV, Mario and Luigi, Rune Factory 4, Pokémon X/Y, Phoenix Wright 5. That'll keep me busy through the rest of the year easily.

Hell I've even let my PS+ slip because I have no time for any of those games anymore.

The system price is fine and the games are there for sure, but the thing that keeps me away are the memory card prices. Pure robbery.

I have no use for a portable personally, gaming is the last thing I want to do when I go out, besides, I already spend too much time doing it at home.Gaming in bed or in the bathroom isn't my thing either.

Probably wouldn't picked up one otherwise, dat OLED.

I almost bought it earlier this year, but I had just gotten a 3DS and my backlog is ridiculous as it is. It's bound to get a revision and/or price cut at some point, so I figured I'd wait. Definitely getting one though for my Persona/Disgaea fix.

I spent ~$500 to import one at Japanese launch, but only recently do I think there's enough content on the system to justify buying it for a non-crazy person.

Price.
Battery Life
Storage Prices.
The region bullshit.

Thats it mostly.

if remote play with PS4 works as promised, I'll buy one. Especially if crossbuys continue.

Price and games. Here in Australia I can either spend $240 and get a 3DS XL and the ton of games with it, or spend $299 and get the PSV with little to no interesting games.

I don't have a PlayStation 3, so the PSPlus is useless to me alongside the cross-play. I still have to decide on which console to grab upon their release for my job, but I guess if I get a PlayStation 4 I may get a Vita, but I highly doubt I'll be getting the PS4.

I love mine but this 4GB card is killing me :(

Trying to equally split time between my Vita and my shiny new 3DS XL is hard though, especially when I already have a backlog on both platforms.

I almost bought one recently, but the dude in the store here told me to wait till September.

He was right about a few other things recently (including xbox 360 redesign, the new mac design, some stylus tech for ipad). He has friends who work in Shenzhen in the tech industry and said that I would be kicking myself if I bought a Vita now.

My Chinese isn't very good, but he said it wasn't a bundle and showed me an issue with the current OLED. I'm thinking a redesign is in the works and may even be on the assembly lines now. Pretty sure it will have new OLED tech but what else could they improve?

I love the current design, but if they include 3G and Wi-Fi as standard plus an SD card slot? Day 1.

90% of my interest in Vita is for the PS4 functionality. I'll rarely take it outside the house.

I don't care for one. I have way too many games for DS I haven't played - if I wanted to play a portable console.

Because lolhandhelds

Honestly, I just don't have time when I'm out to be playing games. When I'm at home I have both my PC and PS3 to suit my gaming needs.

I was planning on buying one then I saw the games. Ninja gaiden on a handheld sounded awesome until I saw the graphics were downgraded alot and it's not even 60fps. I even checked out a demo unit at bestbuy. The screen looks nice but nowhere near how everyone makes it seem. Maybe i'll buy one when the price lowers or a revision with better buttons and sticks comes out.

I actually would like to get a Vita, but no way am I paying the price it launched at.

Sony seems to barely support this thing so why should I? Especially those fucking over priced memory cards.

Has Sony said anything publicly about the Vita lately, other than the standard PR bullshit?

I bought a 3DS XL this year because of a sale and there were games I wanted to play now (and more down the line).

So, a lower price and more games is what will make me want to buy a Vita.

I'm waiting until I have the money and the right deal. Looking for a used white one in great condition, hopefully with at least a 16gb card included.

It has games I want (and PS+/PS4 remote play is another fantastic incentive), and I'll definitely own one by the end of the year.

It has 2 games I'm interested in, one of which is out, and that same one is a game I could get a PS2 version of and not lose much.

And the other is plot-driven and I've been spoiled on it too much by friends who read a Let's Play and proceeded to freak out about it and tell me everything.

So that leaves me with zero games to buy, although I'd never have money to spend on Vita games anyway after buying those frickin' memory cards.
