Why is Excitetruck so DAMN AWESOME?

Lince said:
I agree this game doesn't look too good even for Wii standards (don't hurt me, but I've already played lots of F-Zero, Zelda and RE4). On the other hand and gameplay wise the game is pretty much fun and with tight control after a couple of games, unfortunately split-screen multiplayer feels a bit empy. A nice weekend rental in my book.

For Wii standards, the game looks really good. Keep in mind, at this point Wii standards are still lower than Gamecube, with not one available title really looking as good as F-Zero or RE4. Judged against its contemporaries, Excite Truck looks nice.

I think it is at the very least a good weekend rental. For myself and many others, it's a keeper. I've had it since Christmas and keep coming back to it again and again, ignoring many other games on my stack that should be getting my attention. I'm a big fan of arcade racers though, and I don't just mean arcade-handling like Burnout, but arcade racers like Daytona or Hydro Thunder where you only have 3-5 tracks and just learn to race them to perfection, trying to outdo your previous record. For those of us like that, ET is a dream. If you aren't so much a fan of them, you'll get your jollies out in a rental easily.

Excite Truck is not a purchase for everyone. But those that like it clearly like it a lot.

All I can say is, I wish I picked up Excite Truck at laucnh. This game is pure f'ing awsome fun!! WOW! I'm just getting the hang of it and I can't wait to start doing crazy shit I see in videos. I'm not so sure how a game that was this fun could score in the 7's? Go out and buy this game now, not a chance you will regret it unless you don't like these types of games. PURE BLISS!

Man, judging by that description I will probably go bananas over this. Tomorrow can't come soon enough. If it just was 60 FPS and had AI in multi.
BTW, there is a nice vid at Gametrailers, I thought it looked OK:

This is pure arcade racing bliss! I love it, and I really didn't think I'd like it too much. When we first bought it, I was right in the middle of Zelda, so I did a few quick races and I was put off a little as I was having a hard time coming to grips with the controls. I left it for a while to finish Zelda, and upon returning, I've become hooked!! I've got so many other games that I should be playing, like another run thru of God of War, or playing thru Ninja Gaiden Black and Pirates Legend of Black Kat, but I'm consumed with ExciteTruck! It is that damn good...

Well I caved in and bought it last night (still not opened it yet though as been too busy sorting guide out for VF5 printouts) so thanks for the info guys :)

Hmm yet another polar opposite game for me. Loaded it up 2hours ago to test before I popped VF5 in for first time finally and just teared myself away from it now (stuff VF5 Im going back on this after my tea). The game is bloody brilliant (thanks again everyone if it wasnt for you lot I wouldnt have risked buying it with the average reviews some places gave it) and I cannot understand anyone saying its hard to get to grips with. I have disabilities and my hands can shake (I havent got a huge amount of strength in them either) and I managed to do a 720 on my very first try, if I can do it any normal person can! I had more trouble doing the ! for the terrain on the training and that only took 3 attempts, maybe some reviewers should try more than 1min to understand something nowadays.

Game is just pure fun (and for me what Motorstorm should have been not the drone crap it turned out to be) and their really is some gut pulling jumps and moves you can pull off (that lovely rollercoaster stomache feeling you get on a great racing game). Graphics seem good as well for the Wii (I have less expectations for Wii graphics if I wanted stunning graphics Id go on 360/PS3 this is about the controller and how that plays the games for me) and not an eyesore anyway.

Top game anyway and looking forward to getting as many S class as possible tonight.

Thanks to this thread I rented it (I wasn't interested in it at all). About a week later, I went out and bought it. Such a fun game.

Got it on Friday & I've been having a blast with it - it's a fantastic arcade racer with neatly implemented Wii controls. Loving the soundtrack feature, and I hope it's something other devs will take advantage of in the future. For anyone who's interested, here's my playlist so far:

The rubberband AI's a little obnoxious, though. I just beat my previous time on a race by nearly 30 seconds. On my old best time, I'd gotten 1st place. This time? 6th.

I actually found the air spins quite tricky until I realised that quickly whipping the remote from side-to-side wasn't the best way to do it - it seems that if you just smoothly roll the remote left-to-right (or right-to-left) then it triggers the move every time. Now I'm happily doing 720s every time (and I'm determined to pull off a 1080!)

I haven't noticed a lot of serious rubber banding going in. Usually how your opponents do depends on how much stuff they smack into or how many times you smash them out. But I'm sure there's a certain amount of rubber-banding. I'm probably just not noticing it cuz it's not as bad as Mario Kart 64. :lol

It seems the framerate drops during split screen multiplayer, but during the single player the game looks like burnout 3 on Xbox. Its clean and more importantly it moves fast.

I just wanted to add my own love for this game to the thread.

Picked it up Friday around noon, and have been playing it all weekend long.
At first I though it was just a clear cut arcade racer with not many surprises, but now after I dug a bit deeper into the game I'm blown away at the depth and technique it requires to get the most out of it.
It reminds me of some of the Sega arcade racers, which is a great thing since those games are among my very favourites. :)

Sure for people looking for a PGR or something similar, this ain't it. Actually this is the furthers you probably could get from it.
Reminds me a bit of Crazy Taxi mixed with Sega Rally along with 4 Wheel Thunder and Excitebike 64. Might be a stretch but still.

I love this game so much. Haven't even checked out the other tutorials besides the first 3 or so, simply because I can't wait to get back on the road and play another race, and then another, and another.
I don't even know yet how to do the mid-air tricks due to this! :lol

Anyone who's into arcade racers should at least give it a try, not just 5 minutes, but give it an hour or so, until you're at least able to link a couple of jumps together while trying to land correctly so you can get an even bigger boost on your next one.

My buddy for who I picked up a second copy on Friday came over today for an afternoon of gaming and after playing the game for 5 minutes he was just as hooked as I am.
Can't remember when he had this much fun with a racing game.
We played alternatively and against each other for four hours straight, on top of the hour or 2 that I had been playing it before he came over.

I really hope Monster Games are already working on, or at least planning a sequel.

[OT]Dazzyman? As in Dazzyman from the old VGI board? Great to see you here. :)

This is a fantastic arcade racer, one of the best I've ever played. Better than Burnout, close to Wave Race in the feelings you get controlling your engine. I LOVE IT! By the way Eurogamer just gave Excite Truck a 8, and their review tells exactly why this game is so much fun. Enjoy!

I'm down to one race left on Normal mode. I've gotten an S-rank on everything but Platinum Scotland. It's seriously kicked my ass about 15 times now.

After playing this at the Wii House on Tuesday, I was pretty damn sure I wanted it. So, I picked it up last night, and have currently clocked up around 9 hours on it. Really fun, almost finished the 4th cup on Excite with 2 tracks left (the final scotland one and the 7 mins one). Done some challenges, messed around in multiplayer...

I really like this one, except for the multiplayer. Sucks.

Yes m8 the very same Dazzyman, the one that used to do the horrificly long reviews for Lee now and again as well (check the Dodonpachi one in his sales section :lol ). I finally made it over to GAF in the last month :)

I found the easiest way to do the 720 spin (I keep trying to type 720p for some reason!) was to tilt the pad with the buttons facing towards you (ie the pad on its side as for making the car go upwards) just before the jump and tap boost to launch and because the pads already in the vertical position the car will shoot right up. Then just hold dpad and 1 and keep them both held and just ever so slightly tilt left then right fully quickly and then just rock left and right again with the buttons still held down.

One thing I forgot to mention is the music, I adore it, well the whole game infact reminds me of a pseudo Rock and Roll racing but without the weapons (1 not the 3d crap fest sequel). Im not a fan of pure arcade ones like Sanfransisco rush style and thats the only worry I had but it just feels like one of those classics like Mario Kart snes and Fzero in the controls, definetly tricktasticly good mate :lol

I can feel the EXCITE as well, what a truly great game. Oh and thanks for GAF to recommend it, I would probably have skipped it due to 30 FPS. But who cares for FPS when you are racing in big ol' trucks at ludicrous speed?

I'm here to say that S-Rank on Platinum Scotland is impossible with the last truck.

Edit: Haha, did it first try with the second to last truck. Son of a...

I thought you sounded familiar. :)

Yeah, I actually read that very same review before buying my Japanese PS2 from Lee along with a copy of DDP Dai-Ou-Jou. :D

I actually like the music as well, even though everyone else seems to hate it with a passion.
Tried putting some MP3s in there, but after an hour I just went back to the original tracks.
A bit like F-Zero X in the day. Hated it at first, but soon it just becomes part of the experience and actually soothes it.

I'll have to try that trick thing out. I always pull back after setting off a Super Jump...
To bad I have to work tomorrow. Perhaps I should call in sick. ;)

Man, this is great. Super Excite is like a whole new game.
A bunch of new trucks to unlock, Diamond Class.
This will probably end up being my most played Wii game for a long time.

I dunno... the game music is acceptable, generic rock, but it's not got the hooks of something like F-Zero X. IMO, being able to sling your own tracks on the SD card and link a particular song to a particular course makes for some fantastic racing moments - blasting down a waterway & up off a cliff edge just as the chorus to "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" kicks in, or tearing away from the starting line with the opening riff to "Highway to Hell" blaring out just gives me a real kick :)

Glad so many people are getting into the game - it certainly doesn't deserve the poor reviews some outlets have given it, and it's nice to see at least some of the Wii userbase enjoying it. Hopefully Nintendo & Monster build on this solid first game to give us a richer sequel in a year or two!

Anyone else mistakingly assumed this game was made by NST?

What are they making anyways??

Project H.A.M.M.E.R. is the only one we know they're working on right now, though I expect there at least one or two other projects in the pipeline. I'm actually really looking forward to H.A.M.M.E.R. and could really do with some more info soon.

Bought this on friday, returning from a long work trip. It's like somebody turned the clock back to when I put Waverace 64 into my N64 for the first time. W00t! Look at that jump!

Heh

I urge anyone with a penchant for arcade racers to play this game, its play mechanics are surprisingly deep. Too bad for the limited multiplayer action, makes this an 8.5 game rather than a 9.5 one.

All consoles of the current gen started with some great arcade racers, I like this.

I really don't get all the hate this game gets from some gaming outlets. Bought it on friday (Europe) and it friggin rocks. I have played about 5 hours and it just kicks huge amounts of ass. The sense of speed is amazing. Cleared the first two cups and 3 tracks on the third, have messed around with some challenges and done the tutorial. The game is alot of fun and it just begs to be played one more time, and one more, and one more....

Excite Truck + Slayer (SD-card) = EXCITING!

out of the games i got @ launch (trauma center, excite truck, COD3, raving rabbids, monkeyball), this is the game i keep going back to. i love arcade-style racers, and this fits the bill nicely.

Yeah, I think the bare-bones multiplayer is the only real problem with it. 2 player splitscreen would be acceptable if there were AI racers and you could split it horizontally.. The game has a lot of depth that isn't immediately obvious, which may have been part of the reason it was reviewed poorly.

AdmiralViscen said:
People say this game is overhyped by Nbots, but I think it's actually underhyped.

And I've had a ball with multiplayer. better than Rayman for that.

:lol :lol
They obviously havent played it or at least not until they got the hang of the trick system. Combo jumping with landing boosts ftw!
The multi suffers from bad framerate and lack of AI imo, if they fix the framerate and add AI in multi this will be the near perfect arcade racer.

I think this thread is part of the reason I picked the game up, too (I also read a couple of the more positive reviews... there was a Tom CHick review on AOL or some such place that sounded really good). As for my thoughts, I was down on the game after a few races, but then it clicked.

I know it's heresy, but it's my favorite of the launch games (for the record, Zelda's just not my style -- I've played a fair bit of it, and I can see where the love comes from, but it's just not my kind of game and I think I'm done with it)

I find a couple of things annoy me slightly about the controls -- I've mostly come to terms with the frustration of over-steering (after you hit a certain point, you really just have no control), but I still find it very hit and miss to pull off tricks. That said, they haven't been necessary to progress so far, and I'm still working on it...

But overall, despite those minor issues and the mediocre graphics, the game is a blast (and I think my wife gets a kick out of watching it -- apparently massive air is more interesting than chainsawing space marines in half).

I was one of the few who didn't jump all over Gerstmann for his Zelda review, because I thought he at least made some valid points, whether I agreed with them or not. But this crap from his Excite Truck review is just ridiculous:

Gerstmann said:
Excite Truck's control and speed give it a good amount of potential, but there just isn't enough of a game here to keep you excited for very long. Ultimately, it feels more like a tech demo than a full-fledged game.

A tech-demo?? Forgetting that 'tech-demo' is one of the most obnoxious and over-used phrases in gaming, how does this game possibly fit the bill? Wii Play can be called a tech-demo, Excite Truck is a game. And a badass one at that.

I'm glad I bought it. Wow, really fun game. Graphics are nice and fast, enough content, own music is cool (you can even select and save a track for every course) And I don't mind that there is no real Championship. Individual races are less frustrating. :]

Dave Long said:

Yeah that fits the game pretty well. :lol

The game is fun for everyone -- wife likes to watch me play, daughter wants to play multiplayer with me, son (little cheeky chap) wants to play the CRASH minigame with some help from dad. Also, blue skies all the way. :D

As for the "tech demo", don't take Gamespot too seriously for Wii stuff. I wouldn't trust them for my buying decisions, they seem very distant from my POV these days on Wii stuff.

Thanks to the depth of the level design and gameplay mechanics, this is a hardcore players dream. Can't wait to see some creative tree run videos...not mention try them myself :)

Finally it's out also in Europe. And, man, this game is pure awesomeness. And FUN!
I badly want to play it online. It's a shame the lacking of an online mode: it would be ****ing great to send someone in the sky by terramorphing...
