Why is NeoGaf so predominantly male?

Can someone sum up the 30+ pages for me? Too much to read through.

What has happened that caused so much discussion.

Basically, a bunch of people coming in and saying 'lol videos games are for dudes', women saying it's more complicated than that, people explaining the reasons that even a forum like Gaf can be offputting for women, jars, some people coming in and saying that women only like social games and are only into gaming because of boyfriends, and therefore can't be 'real' gamers, jars, repeat the first bits, sherlock, batman, and now here :)

Read Cyan's post, at least strictly for the topic's primary discussion.

Beyond that? Something about jars and Sherlock/Batman.

Batman? lol

Thanks.

Out of curiosity has anyone seen this actually said? I don't doubt someone did, and I have seen milder versions like preferring not to play a female character, but I'm morbidly curious if there are people actually completely put off by there being a strong female character in a game.
Well, according to many on gaming side, yes there are enough people who would be completely put off by the idea to make it impossible for the game to actually be profitable.

Nah he is pretty dumb all the time.
no u

Well I was wondering more about the presence of them in a game period, not even as the primary player character, as one's arguably more of a preference and the other's straight up misogyny.

I guess the cover art issues could be proof though...

I'd say if someone's unwilling to play a game that stars a female protagonist, they've got some pretty fucked up ideas about women. We're all human, and more alike than we are different. If someone is saying: "Sorry, I can't ever relate to a woman" I can't help but conclude they don't even see them as human.

Actually according to some girls when I went out, I am big and scary. That was kind of disheartening.

Anyways on the topic of batmans. Black Panther could kick his butt.
I don't find the discussion of who can beat up who particularly interesting when it comes to superheroes. I wouldn't mind a Batman vs. Black Panther fight, but the enjoyment there is more in the animation/art, fight choreography, execution, etc. and not who actually wins.

This is why I stopped playing Tomb Raider. Girls doing actiony stuff? C'mon...Everyone knows women are incapable of doing that stuff. Every horror movie I see has women constantly falling and twisting their ankle.

" Women don't do [insert gansta related thing here]"

One of them had to nerve to call gansters like the godfather generic itallian-esque mobsters, bank robbers ect. classy, and I believe and people like CJ weren't classy for some reason. Because organized thugs and killers have a classy scale.

Those are the best kinds of discussions, what you a person with better things to do?

But seriously I concern myself with the winner depending on what kind of fight it is. Like if its super man vs the Sentinel , I am watching for the fighting not the winning. But if its super man vs Dr Strange. Now we I have to pay attention , because these are two different types of heroes, with two different types of specialties. One possibly outclassing the other. Not a fan of bullshit losses so I pay attention in those circumstances.

I actually wonder if that's an empathy problem period as I'm sure many people CAN relate to, say, dogs or cats just fine. Nevermind the GTA:SA example there, some people just seem unwilling to go beyond a certain narrow frame.

Still, even under the most generous view this unwillingness to go out of a comfort zone is what contributes to homogeneity with game protagonists... and movie protagonists too come to think of it, so it's still frustrating to see people refuse that.

This might be slightly off-topic, but often I'll get ads on GAF about some online MMO or something that advertises itself as "FOR MALE GAMERS ONLY." Here are two examples:

Not only is it sexist, but it's an absolutely stupid way to advertise your game. For one, you're alienating female gamers and making them not want to play your game. And secondly, what kind of guy looks at that and thinks "Male gamers only? Now this I gotta play!"

Either someone's actually buying into that crap or at least marketing thinks they do, given Dr Pepper's own attempt. Which ends up just putting me off to the notion of masculinity if anything, though it really does come off more as a lame attempt at over compensating for that Dr Pepper thing.

Maybe they've been burned too many times by girls playing MMO's for attention and gifts. :(

That is something I never got, I have seen people loose whole accounts trying to entertain a girl.

Not trying to be rude but, why you giving away all that, for a girl who isn't giving you anything in return, not even friendship, let alone screwing.

I am not saying all girls in MMO's are like this, that would be a lie. But every once in a while I see a dude just away giving ass long ass list of like Paid shit, for someone they barely know.

What happened?

Maybe there are sooo many women in the game world that they only want men in there to fix the ratio...

So many games that did have string female protagonists (or tried to) failed on other levels, but then one of the reasons blamed is lolgirl characters. And even when we get a female lead? Well, sometimes they are kinda bogus.

Vague post, on phone, hanging with sleepy baby. But a lot of the good examples are games in which the character doesn't matter much and just happens to be female (see: Portal), but maybe that's not a bad thing.

I sure wouldn't mind spending a few years writing in the industry, though.

Desperation

Sheer desperation and a deep misunderstanding of how human relationships work

My guess is they're trying to entice horny men making them think there's nudity or something in it. I'm going to assume these are pretty generic games that nobody - men or women - would want to play in the first place and that's there 'marketing' ploy.

Edit: I've seen the Wartunes one pop up a lot but that Pirates one.... lol! They blatantly ripped off the Disney PotC logo.

Also consider that some of those are guys pretending to be girls. (But no one calls them out on their shit.)

And ironically, what the girls are giving the guys in return is attention, even if it lasts for all of five seconds.

I... well wow ok.

So the game plan here for you bud, is when you get to the end of a thing, reflect back on it and conclude "so what it comes down to is i'm an elitist, marginalizing jerk" you oughta delete the post and sit quietly for a hot minute. Why would you want to be those things. Choose to not be those things and the world would be happier.

also its hard to call urself elitist you cant bother to capitalize.

I guess because, although there are female gamers out there, most of the gamers today are still males. Plus, in my experience it's not always easy to tell if someone is a male or female here on Gaf, and not every female is going to flaunt or bring attention to the fact that she's a female (at least I don't see the point in it). Honestly, I don't really care. I'm just glad that NeoGAF exists and that there are male and female members.

that was kind of an exaggerated joke line, along with the Deliciously Defensive part, and quite a few other bits. i don't type 100% from my personality, just a persona.
neogaf isn't very good at understanding inflection through text.

Your jokes aren't funny and you're not very good at understanding real-life concerns through text. :(

To be clear, I was kind of only commenting on your persona's jokes and lack of ability to understand real-life concerns. I'm sure the 100% real you is on top of that shit.

As an aside, PoliGAF says Dax's ban is reportedly permanent, possibly for a post in this thread. Thought that might be of interest.
Wut. I wish a mod would comment as to why specifically; I'm hard-pressed to imagine what she might've said in this thread that was permaban-worthy.

I'm left wondering why we should invest any time participating in this forum if we can get banned at the drop of a hat.

I'm glad there is moderation. Nothing ever works perfectly, however.

eta: And I mean, it's not like we have a right to GAF, but... I don't know. Without the banner posting the reason for the ban, it's all speculation, but... I don't know. Nothing much to be said.

NeoGAF is more a stepping stone for me, usually to some other avenue such as IRC or some game.
