Why is no one complaining about MS being "anti-consumer"?

I would not call it hypocrisy - more like retaliation. "It is not us who started that war" basically. And the attitude of sony fans with their high horses regarding exclusivity does not win love either (just look at poster above how said that PS brought Heavy Rain to PC (after 9 years). Thanks lol)

I'm not really so sure that I've seen a lot this high horse business you speak of. NGL, I'm a PlayStation gamer, have been since 1996 and it's never changed and I can see Sony fucking themselves up like in the PS3 era all over again and this buying up of exclusive games... it really makes me feel like people have short memories round here. Bioshock started off 360 exclusive? Mass Effect was kept 360 exclusive for years. Dead Rising started as 360 exclusive. Metro 2033 was made a 360 exclusive. Gears of War was going to multi-platform before Microsoft bought the IP but was firmly a 360 exclusive up to that point. Who started the 'get this downloadable content first before anywhere else' business also? That'll be Microsoft also. It was also Microsoft who turned Sony down when they tried offering an olive branch with cross platform play. Success breeds arrogance and it's disgusting. Go back even further, Microsoft fucked up so many companies pulling out of marketing and publishing agreements. Look at Double Fine and Ninja Theory (formerly Just Add Monsters) - Microsoft now own them but nearly put them both out of business a long time ago, Double Fine nearly went under before they began! They sure as hell fucked Oddworld up, which I believe is the first time I had heard the term money hatting.

I mean look, I'm not happy as a PlayStation gamer that Final Fantasy 16 is exclusive, or Ghostwire Tokyo or Deathloop. I think it's waste of time and it's ridiculous that Sony would be picking up exclusive Final Fantasy games after everything that Square did to make the series go multi-platform. I would rather Sony put proper money into expanding their first party studios, since Microsoft very quickly went from being a much smaller entity to virtually double the size of Sony first party studios if the two additional acquisitions are to be believed.

I have no issue in developing your first party, what I do take issue with is disrupting the market. Sony and Microsoft are both guilty of this. But Microsoft is not guilt free and arguably are only receiving a taste of the medicine they received last generation, soon to be generation before last. But I would rather Sony acquire content that is already exclusive to their platform such as KojiPro or Bluepoint to prevent people having things they are used too taken away from them, or bringing back forgotten giants like Konami who died a death. But swallowing a whole publisher is a bit of a dick move. And since Sony started their great quiet in 2017, Microsoft fans have been all over the high horse. Our console is more powerful! We now own X studio and x Studio etc. Now it's our console is cheaper! But I maintain that OP is right. Microsoft is being very anti-consumer and people just think it's funny or 'oh well, u mad bro?' Imagine if Sony bought 2K Games or Activision. Pfft.

Exclusives are good

Unique experiences for each console will make them worth buying. I felt zero need for an Xbox One all gen, but if MS deliver on the promise of their studios then I can definitely buy in a few years

Because PC still gets the games. No one cares about Playstation but playstation fans.

Its a genius move by MS to include PC because who would bitch and moan more about Bethesda games being removed from their platform?

Great Point.
Considering the awesome mod community for BGS games on PC, it would totally suck if anyone else bought ZeniMax. You know damn good and well if it had been Sony they would have deprived PC gamers of these games.

I honestly think it's much shadier and underhanded to bribe companies to keep their games off your competitors' consoles via timed exclusivity, as Sony have been leading the way on for years now.

I also think that Bethesda themselves are going to massively benefit from being a part of Microsoft now. Arkane in particular, but also Bethesda Softworks, have had commercial dud after dud after dud, with their only announce future games being Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI and therefore still years away. Arkane in particular make incredible games - some of the best in the entire industry - but now being part of Microsoft I hope they have a renewed sense of security that they can continue to make their signature immersive sim games. I suspect if Microsoft hadn't bought Zenimax then many of these studios would have soon started layoffs, restructuring, people would lead, teams break up, offices closed, etc. to keep costs down.

This is an arrangement I legitimately believe will benefit both Bethesda and Microsoft.

Probably also worth bearing in mind how much more accessible Microsoft's exclusives are than Sony's. With Sony, you either buy a Playstation or you don't play their exclusives, period. With Microsoft, you can buy it on Xbox, or you can buy it on PC, usually Steam or Game Pass for PC. Some of them end up on the Switch. And all of the Game Pass games will soon be available on any Android phone via xCloud. You have many, many more options there.

Yeah Sony hates mods in general.

Yeah Sony hates mods in general.

No kidding!
Look what happened with Skyrim. Sony whined and cried because Xbox got Mods and PS didn't, then BGS made mods available for PS4 and Sony put very strict limitations on them.

I seem to recall Mr. Cheerful Todd Howard was not too fond of Sony during that period to put it mildly.

Sony has been getting a lot of flack from gamers and even the gaming media (for their exclusivity/timed exclusivity deals), now Microsoft comes out and swallows a company whole (and threatens to swallow even more) and no one even bats an eye?... how is that for hypocrisy?

Avatar quote lmao

Comparing Bethesda which has strong ties to Microsoft since 2001 and who WANTED to be acquired by them, to Sony, who:

  • Moneyhats with the sole intention of keeping games off the competition for as long as possible
  • Obsfucates and clouds information in the shadiest ways, to confused the consumers and media to suit their business
  • Spending hundreds of millions of dollars doing these shady practices
  • Lying to everyone including their loyal diehard fan base because they know fanboys like you will gobble up whatever they serve you, i.e letting MS take tons of flak and years of negative PR regarding generations only to find out they have a much worse version of it (prices, lack of upgrades, amount if crossplatform exclusives and even future titles like Horizon out of nowhere) right at the last minute
  • Renewing moneyhatted year exclusive DLC for another year to fuck over Xbox customers even more (Destiny DLC, because of this, released on Xbox after the sequel lmao...wtf is this)
  • Going back on what was said in their own trailers at their own conferences (FFXVI is a timed exclusive but now they're trying to muddy the waters regarding that)
  • I can go on forever
Sony is a terrible fucking company, and people like you help them keep this mindset.

Moneyhatting two Bethesda games and in talks for moneyhatting one of the biggest upcoming games, Starfield, just like the rumors said about them going after games/devs with close MS ties. Microsoft came along and showed them how its really done; you dont poke the bear for this long and think nothing will happen, do you?

And now the CEO of MS himself says they are open for more like this in the future, something Sony can't compete with. That's what you get when you do this shit against a company that is now being fucking serious.

Deal with it, because there is more to come.

This is such a great, well-written post. Allow me to make TLDR for our Sony fans that can't be bothered to read it:
Cry more.

Microsoft got their fair share of flack for 3rd party timed exclusivity deals. Are we just pretending Tomb Raider didn't happen or what?

Tomb Raider you say?

You mean the franchise that was originally multiplat on PS1 and Sega, and then Sony moneyhatted the sequel and eventual ENTIRE FRANCHISE to be Playstation exclusive, with the franchise then being associated with Playstation from then on there? Which they did with other games and eventually Sega left the hardware market because they couldn't compete?

That Tomb Raider?

Edit: read your post wrong, seems you're making my point lol

If even CatLady, one the nicest people on this forum, is saying this, then you know it's for real.

Sony fanboys, stop crying if you dish out what you can't take, for almost 2 generations in a row.

If the rumors are true that Zenimax was struggling financially (I mean, Fallout 76 is stupid) then the Microsoft acquisition could be as pro-gamer as possible especially if they stick to their word of not firing anyone or shutting any studios down. I just hope I don't need a Bill Gates microchip embedded in me to be able to play Fallout New Vegas 2.
