Why so slow, PSN Store?

I'm trying to download The Shoot demo since I got a Move this week and wanted to mess around with some light gun gaming. Anyway it's only like 380MB but I've been sitting here for 10 minutes and it's only at about 7%. Mind you, I'm on a Verizon FIOS, my connection is pretty fast (just SpeedTest.netted it, it's about 15 Mbps).

Is there any reason for this? Is it just because it's Friday night? This is crazy.

Store does get sluggish sometimes =/

It isn't super fast

It's always slow and the downloads are throttled.

No and, are they?

Unless you mean they're throttled by the server congestion and not intentionally.

I've been able to max out my 30mb connection on PSN.

I personally always seem to get great speeds out of the store. I use wireless internet and my download speed is only 5 megs.

It's funny, whenever I test my DL speeds using my PS3, I always have insane numbers, higher than the ones using Speedtest, and much closer to my theoretical bandwidth speeds. In practice, though, downloads always seem to be painfully slow.

Seems to be a region thing.

I've been checking my download speed for patches ever since I've heard the meme that PSN is slow and I've always been maxed out.

But I'm in continental Europe.

Hmmmm maybe it's just a bad time to be trying to download stuff then. Or maybe it's just my region, I'm in the mid Atlantic US.

Next up is the Killzone 3 demo, clocking in at 1522 MB. I may be letting my PS3 run overnight.

I have VerFios also, and it always download super fast. I never once had slow connection with fios or psn - I used to with cable couple years ago, but ever since I switched to fios, no probs.

You using wireless? I'm pretty sure I always got faster speeds on wired, thought that could be because of my router, but even then I never get more than probably 1/3rd of my total speed. Steam maxes it no problem, as a point of comparison.

Nope.

As I've moved around three times while owning a PS3, I can tell you that the service you use and your location make a difference. In my current house and my most recent condo, the speeds were extremely fast. In the apartment before that, however, it was just as slow as the OP is reporting. I've seen slow speeds at some other places as well.

I have no idea why, but I don't think they are throttling anything. It simply seems to run very slow in some areas on certain networks and very fast on others.

Honestly it depends almost entirely on your area. Distance from the server, congestion, your connection, etc.

It's no secret that Sony doesn't have the same amount of servers as say, XBL, hence download speeds are inconsistent from person to person / region to region.

The store works in mysterious ways. Tried to download the GT5 2.0 patch on Thursday, it told me that I would take 10hours... Tried again of Friday and got it within half an hour.

It's really a shitty service.

1 hour and 30 minutes for a few hundred Mb download on a 15Mbs connection is not normal.

I would pay money for faster downloads, Sony.

More like paying for a better ISP.

Can DL 3GB within an hour, wired connection. 15Mbs Down too.

at home i'd always bitch because EVERYTHING would be slow, whether it was demos or updates, which were way faster on xbl. here at school, the internet speed is fast enough where i don't bitch anywhere near as much

It appears as though people glossed over my post.

PS3 (Sony) doesn't have the same number of servers around the US (and in other territories) as Microsoft does. Mainly, this is because the service is free, hence the number of servers is lower. Because of this, if you are in a densely populated area, or a good distance from a server, then you will experience slower times. Some area's have more servers allotted to them, while others have fewer.

Your connection doesn't really matter as much as many of you think. That said, ISP can have a dramatic impact on speeds, but it is not always the case.

The only reason 360 downloads are faster is because patches are generally much smaller (because of the 360 SDK, I believe) and there are FAR more servers available to download from in comparison (because it is a pay service).

Funny how Steam has no problems and downloads are blazingly fast.

It's probably an issue of Sony having no servers near where I live.

Always wired.

It's extremely fast for me(NZ), I get 1mb per second, which is amazing for my internet, I mean I get only 200kb/s-ish average when downloading on the internet.

slow speeds on a 50 mbps connection, no other issues dns ports open, wired connection, PSN has always been slow for me since launch. Some system updates have clocked in at over an hour to DL

What does the service being free have anything to do with the PSN store? Steam and XBL Silver are free too. PSN games cost about as much as XBL ones. You'd think Sony could at least afford decent bandwidth to people who are paying for content on the store.

I may do that.

The good news is that, since I made this thread, all my items have finally downloaded. Now I'm just waiting for them to finish installing.

WHEN WILL SONY STOP DOING THIS DUMB SHIT:

No shit. They don't even test their usability at all.

It's kinda crazy hearing people about 2000 minute wait times and such. I've never really had a problem downloading anything, aside from an update after the breach.

Edit - I should probably mention I use a direct connection for my PS3, not wifi.

It's funny, I'm on a 10 Mbps connection, and my downloads are faster on the PSN than on my computer. I put my PS3 IP on a DMZ so maybe that's it.

server side bandwidth throttling, i have a feeling they throttle based on the content. if you get alot of free demos you have low priority, if you have a ton of bought content they prioritize those people and those with plus probably the highest.

i remember at first psn was reasonable but as i downloaded more demos its gotten slower and slower. and im on a 12mbit connection (even tho its advertised as 25mbit fucking comcast)

PS3 does not work well with some routers.
I had an old Netgear one and it was perfect. I did that DMZ thing and I had awesome speed (wireless too).

Then one day that modem got bricked during a firmware update and bought a newer Netgear. I downloaded 2-3 mb per minute! DMZ didn't work.
What did work was disabling any security (wep wpa whatever) and broadcasting my ssid. Even just hiding ssid would not work. Then I had top speed again.

Try this and see if it works.
