Wii owner forms battle plan to buy PS3

Here's an important question for you. Do you have an audio receiver? Does your receiver have hdmi inputs? If so, then you're going to need 2 cables. 1 to the receiver, 1 to the TV. If not, then you'll probably need an optical cable for your audio or you can use the component cables (unless you want to use the speakers on the TV). Well, it's completely dependent on your receiver and what inputs it has and which of those inputs are already in use.

The power supply of the PS3 is internal, no block like the wii.

Topic starter here:

Can someone give me measurements on the thickness of the PS3 power cable? I gotta make sure it can fit through the cabinet hole.

Also, what is an audio receiver? I don't have surround sound or any sound devices that are separate from the TV itself. I just have the HDTV, and the HDTV has HDMI ports. So, will one cable suffice then?

Oh, and I definitely plan to download the MGS Database, although the two-hour retrospective and various Wikipedia articles (that I comb to avoid MGS4 spoilers) have proven quite thorough, methinks.

I look forward to answers on the thickness of the PS3's power cable and the whole business about what an audio "receiver" is. Thanks.

It's the exact same cord you'll find coming out of your PCs power supply.

Leech, what's the thickest part on said cable? I can't see the PC's cables clearly because it's up against a wall. Could you tell me roughly how wide the thickest part is? For instance, the bulge that constitutes the widest point on the HDMI cable is nearly an inch, I'd say.

It's cool that the power block is in the PS3. I know the PS3 can fit in the cabinet with some room to spare, so no problems there.

This is the topic starter again.

I looked at the back of the TV (not easy, as it's two inches from the wall!), and I see two USB-like sockets labeled HDMI 1 and HDMI 2. Above the sockets, it says HDMI. So it looks good on that front. Are these super-cheap cables ($4?!) used or new? If they're new, damn... Talk about value.

I have another question. What are the dimensions of the PS3? I'm fairly certain my TV cabinet's lower shelf is big enough. It's very deep, and tall... But only 17 inches wide. I think the PS3 is only 12-13 inches wide... Is this correct? If so, it should fit easily.

I'm glad nobody's taken offense to my Uncharted comment, because as I said I'm sure it's a good game. I'd just need to play it -- or have somebody explain why it's so lovable -- to understand. In terms of the games I like, I always gravitate toward games that have a distinct sense of vision. Like Bioshock: it's a great-playing game made greater by a singular style -- in this case, an Ayn Rand dystopia in an Art Deco world gone nautical. Creatively, that pegs my meter all the way. Likewise, I was drawn to Okami for Zelda-style gameplay in a living brushstroke-and-woodcut world; I was drawn to Galaxy for its fantastical, anything-goes take on outer space. These game suck me in and make me feel like a kid again. And you can't put a price on that.

In regards to how Wii looks on the LCD HDTV... It looks great, actually, and that's without composite cables... Well actually, let me qualify that comment. Most games look great. Okami looks wonderful, Super Mario Galaxy looks AMAZING (but then again, when doesn't it?), and Super Smash Bros. is beautiful. That's with the widescreen setting on, too. The only games I have that don't look so hot on the TV are Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition and Metroid Prime 3. Those two look very muddled and blurry. I'll need to get better cables for the Wii at some point.

If it's a distinct artistic vision you are drawn to, wait until November when Valkyria Chronicles comes out.

Concerning Uncharted. It is one of the top 5 best games for the PS3. Graphics aside (they are astounding) the game has more charm and style than any game I've played in a long while. The controls are spot on, it has a decent mix of action and platforming (although leans more towards action 60/40) and the story/voice acting are really captivating. The most important point however is it is damn fun. It's like watching Raiders of the Lost Ark for the first time.

Well, since it uses a PC power cord, you could use ANY compatible cord with the PS3 should the included cable not fit (though I doubt that would be an issue).

Also, I noticed your comments earlier on software (that you were uncertain of) and I wanted to make sure you hadn't forgotten that demos are available for many games on both HD systems (360 and PS3). So, for instance, you could try out a game like Uncharted by downloading the free demo to see if you like it! I think you'll be pleased with all of the content available for free on the PSN!

Also, I see you're getting the MGS4 bundle. I hope you enjoy MGS4, but I also hope you are a fan of cinematic cutscenes as the game is filled to the brim with them. There's like 8-9 hours worth of cinema scenes. I think most Metal Gear fans enjoyed them, but they CAN be excessive! Just a warning. Of course, since you seem to be a movie fan anyways, you should enjoy it. The mix of cinema and game is one of the things that has always made MGS a unique series.

THIS! Buy Uncharted :D

I just wanted to congratulat you.
I've been rolling with a Wii60 for some time, and I truly think that any gamer with two consoles or more has the right idea.

I wish I could geta PS3 too, but I've gotta be more careful with my money.

Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS!

I got a call from UPS saying my PS3 80GB MGS4 bundle will be in tomorrow. Once I get it, I won't be able to set it up until my dad sands down the hole in the TV cabinet to accomodate the bulky HDMI cable. He's the type that's touchy about things getting scratched, so he doesn't trust me to do it...

I'm looking forward to MGS4. As usual, I've read the criticisms of it ahead of time to keep my expectations in check.

Most of the complaints I've read are leveled against the preponderance of long, meandering cutscenes, and after watching one on YouTube where Sunny and Naomi make eggs and then Snake, Naomi and Otacon huddle around a computer, I can see how the game could've benefitted from more streamlined storytelling. That being said, I found the scene quite interesting for what it was, and beautiful to look at and listen to. I also watched another scene where Snake and Drebin are sitting in a truck talking about the B&B Corp, and when Drebin made the egg analogy I immediately saw the symbolic significance of the shot where Sunny's cooking eggs. I love that sort of rich, layered storytelling.

That being said, I'm new to Metal Gear, so I've been doing my homework to prepare. I watched the six-part, two-hour retrospective at GameTrailers, and I've been reading up on it at Wikipedia. I plan to download the free Database off of PSN for further reading. I know all the key characters and story arcs of the series, so I think I'll be able to follow the story just fine.

What I'm perhaps most excited about is Metal Gear Online. I must've watched a hundred some videos of it on YouTube in the last 48 hours (I highly recommend this video playlist). I love the slow and methodical, haste-makes-waste pace to it, where you make tactical use of cover and blind corners to stop 'n pop your foes. The levels look very complex, perfect for sneaking around and hiding. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside just thinking about. I can't wait to try it! And if I like it once I get the hang of it, I plan to get the Gene Expansion Pack Plus. I know the regular expansion is $12; how much is Plus?

I think my second game... will be Grand Theft Auto IV. That's another title I can't stop watching on YouTube. The cops 'n crooks multiplayer mode looks hysterical, and the fact I've watched like dozens of videos and still haven't seen the same stretch of city twice makes me realize how immense Liberty City must be. Probably the most overwhelming sense of scale since entering Hyrule Field for the first time in Ocarina of Time.

And then the definitive version of Bioshock, in October... I'll have my plate full, I reckon. Here's hoping everything works out tomorrow.

Update: in addition to my above post, I need to know, how wide is the widest point on the PS3 power cable? My dad just sanded the hole in the cabinet wider so that the HDMI cable now fits through, but we need to know if the power cable will be able to pass through as well.

I look forward to your response.

It's as wide as a computer power cable.

Can't really answer the question about the size of the power cable, but in regards to MGO...

do this first

oh, and you can sign up for the PlayStation Network now here.

It'll save you a lot of time when you're ready to start playing.

Oh, and your PS3 probably won't come with the latest firmware (I don't think)

so you can download it here first to a memory stick or usb stick and use that instead of waiting for it to update itself.

It goes like this in folders on the storage media: PS3 > UPDATE > [file]

It's about an inch to an inch+0.25. That's from the rectangular end. The prong end is about an inch, round-ish.

It's a standard C13 plug. About 1"x0.75".

The hole is roughly an inch, so I think it should fit, although we're prepared to sand it more if the grim reality is it's still too small. Thanks for the measurements.

This is interesting. So I'm looking at the Konami page. What's the difference between a Konami ID and a Game ID? When I play MGO, will I need to login with both? And is the name I use for the Game ID the name of my character in the game?

Also, in regards to the PSN signup, is my sign-in account name different from my online ID? The online ID isn't the same as my Game ID, correct?

Finally, for those steps on the firmware update, are you saying to put the files I download into a folder called UPDATE, and put the UPDATE folder inside another folder called PS3? And if so, where do I put the PS3 folder in the system once I power on the system and plug in the memory stick?

This sounds like it could speed up the process quite a bit!

EDIT: I'm still on the fence about Uncharted. I watched the intro on YouTube and found the characters a bit irritating, although I'm not judging the whole game (or even the characters) on that one cutscene.

Your Konami ID is for the Konami web portal. Your game ID is for logging into the game. And no, your Game ID is not the name of your MGO character.

And yes, your PSN ID is different from all of your Komani IDS. It's confusing, I know.

Don't worry about updating the firmware via USB stick. You can just have the PS3 download it automatically. It has worked flawlessly for me every single time.

Well, I'll go and sign up for the various accounts now. In the meanwhile, one question: is there any way to tell if my PS3 will be compatible with my wireless router? I really hope so. I mean, it works with the Wii, so I'd think it'd work with the PS3, but, if there's some way to verify that'd be nice.

The guy above answered most of the questions.

I was basically telling you to do the update thing now because at least you can 'download' the update now instead of setting up the PS3, then wanting to play online and having to wait for it to download wirelessly and install if you can already have it available to just skip straight to the install.

And yea...the MGO process (initially) is confusing.

You'll need to come up with a Konami ID a Game ID and a character ID.

It's all self explanatory once you get into it, but it's not as straightforward as every other online game.

And in regards to the PSN name...you create that and its allows you to use the Playstation Network for everything the PSN offers, but MGO (confusingly) doesn't use the PSN login...even though you'll need to be logged in...if that makes any kind of sense :lol

As a MGS4 bundle, 80GB PS3 owner, I'll say this:

The system blows out a hell of a lot of hot hair while it's on. Probably more during gameplay as opposed to playing a blu-ray disc.

It's still much quieter and cooler than my 360, but it's nearby area gets warm due to the hot air being pushed out of the side and back vents.

Ooo, will it be okay with several inches on all sides of the system? I want to put it in the cabinet, a relatively enclosed space. Do you think it'll keep its cool? And, is it necessarily a bad thing if it warms up the area around it?

The people earlier in this thread said I wouldn't need a fan. I hope that's the case. I don't have room for a fan!

You probably should give teh console a lot of room to breathe. I put my PS3 on a different shelf in my home theater cabinet, the shelf it was on before has a square hole behind it for the wires to come out from and that's where all the hot air from the PS3 was being blown out from, but the shelf the PS3 is now on doesn't have that and the PS3 is noticeably louder, and I can definitely feel all the hot air being collected behind the PS3.

More space around it always helps. But whatever happens, don't buy an addon fan.
The PS3's internal fan is temperature controlled and it's huge. The thing has a whole lot of headroom. If you feed it too warm air, it will just react by pushing more of that air through. It'll be fine.
If you give it more room to breathe it will stay quieter though.

The shelf I plan to put it in has a hole in the back for wires that's about an inch wide and at least as tall. So, hot air will have that exit, as well as several inches to either side of the system and many inches above.

And thanks for the tips, BCN-Ron. What you said makes sense. It'll be interesting to see how loud it is. I'm so used to the dead-silent Wii.

Then he can get a media center pc with one in it.
I'm not getting the PS3 just for the Blu-ray player, although many publications say it's the best and most affordable BD player out there. I'm also getting the PS3 to play games like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear Online (included with the system), Grand Theft Auto 4, Bioshock, Soul Calibur IV, Killzone 2 and/or Resistance 2 (I like shooters but await the reviews; still, 60-player multiplayer in R2?!), Street Fighter IV, SOCOM, Unreal Tournament 3, Call of Duty 4, Resident Evil 5, Final Fantasy XIII, Gran Tursimo 5, and maybe games like Uncharted, Warhawk, Ratchet and Clank, and LittleBigPlanet. I can also revisit all of the old PS1 and PS2 games I never played (which is to say, all of them).

It seems like a good deal to me. I finally have access to the OTHER half of gaming, as the industry now is basically Wii games and "next-gen" games, with the latter sharing many games as more and more titles go multiplatform. To my knowledge, the PS3 is the only Blu-ray player that let's me do all of this on top of playing movies in HD.

That being said, the more expensive something is, the more I expect something to go wrong or be disappointing. So, it's with my expectations in check that I await the PS3's arrival. It's a long-term investment:, though: MGS4 and MGO now (plus my BD copy of Pan's Labyrinth), GTA4 and its online mode next, and Bioshock in October (and hopefully Hellboy II on BD around then). All of these games look like RE4-calibur experiences, and I still play RE4. After those three games, I'll start looking forward to the others I named.

Chances are, when all's said and done the Wii will still have the best game of the generation (Super Mario Galaxy), and honestly, if I was stranded on an island that game would probably suffice. But it's time I broadened my horizons.

So, PSWii it is.

I've heard keeping the PS3 as dust free as possible helps to keep the fans from spinning as hard. So clean your PS3 of dust periodically I suppose.

It's worth trying. I'll try to dust off every now and then to keep it clean. Thanks for the tip.

I have a question about Metal Gear Online. I know that the starter pack limits you to one character, and the Gene Expansion Pack Plus gives you another character slot. My question is, are the special characters like Meryl and Johnny Akiba separate from the custom-created characters? In other words, if I make an all-new female character using the Gene Expansion Pack, will I still be able to play as both Meryl and Johnny?

I've been watching MGO videos at YouTube and wondering about that.

There's an infamous Linksys router that completely craps out on the PS3 due to the UPnP settings. Either a firmware upgrade and/or custom router firmware gets rid of it.

Other than that, most routers that support UPnP will be compatible with the PS3. I use a Belkin Wireless G router and it has given me no problems.

I have a Netgear. I'm not sure how to check its model number, or if that makes a difference. It works with the Wii, though, and it was bought around the Wii's launch. One way or another I'm going to take advantage of the free online multiplayer, though. MGO demands it!

EDIT: Just rewatched IGN's amazing trailer for Bioshock PS3. OMG OMG OMG. Rapture, while an inanimate place, looks like the most amazing character ever. Game looks damn scary, and comes out around Halloween. Sweet.

It should be fine. Not many people here, if any at all, have Netgear problems. On the rare chance you do run into a problem, you can always disable the Media Sharing option on the PS3 to prevent it from bringing down your connection.

Uncharted is definitely worth picking up, but I suggest getting it after beating MGS4 or something, since you might get distracted.

Edit: Do you have a PS2? You should really pick up the MGS Essentials collection, if you aren't familiar with the series.

or just watch the cutscenes all on youtube :P

I don't have a PS2. However, since I'm getting the MGS4 bundle, the PS3 I'm getting will be able to play PS2 games. So, I may very well pick up the Essentials Collection at some point, although not for a while. GTA4 is next on my to-get list after I'm done playing MGS4. And after GTA4, I plan on getting Bioshock in October. Way too many good games in a short span of time!

Yeah, I plan to make use of YouTube'd cutscenes if I still don't understand a plot point after watching the retrospective and reading the Database. I love YouTube.

I just finished signing up for the Konami and Game ID at the website. It took me several tries since they put so many restrictions on each. For instance, the Game ID password is numbers only (probably so it's faster to login while playing), and both usernames must use lowercase letters. But, no biggie. It's all done now, along with my PSN login. So, assuming the firmware update goes smoothly and the PS3 talks to my router, it should be smooth sailing online.

And just to be clear, playing Metal Gear Online is free, right? *is itching to play MGO*

Buy LittleBigPlanet! It'll be the best game this year by far, imo, and as a Nintendo fan you should love it as well.

Also, buy Uncharted. It deserves more sales. Best ps3 game after MGS4, at the moment.

I wouldn't put it in a cabinet since the PS3 runs pretty hot when it gets going. Oh and make sure you have a warranty(just in case) and a decent power surge protector. I don't know why but I notice many people have no problems spending thousands on high end electronics but skimp on warranties and surge protectors. Makes no sense when you think about it.

LittleBigPlanet is an interesting concept, but the platforming is too loose and floaty for my tastes, the physics look slow to respond, and it simply doesn't appeal to me from an aesthetic standpoint. From what I've seen it lacks soul. Compare the look of LittleBigPlanet to Super Mario Galaxy. LBP looks like something an American focus group would come up with, with dull colorless environments that border on photorealism, while Mario is electrifying in its color and warmth, a fresh fantasy. So I don't think it's accurate to say Nintendo fans would gravitate toward LBP.

But who knows? It could be awesome. I'll have to try a demo, I guess.

I'm going to hook it up to a surge protector, the same surge protector the HDTV is hooked up to. I plan to get an even better one soon. As for warranties, where can I get one? Is there any sort of basic warranty that comes with the system by default? And finally, I plan to put it in the cabinet. Is there any danger to the system running hot? It'll have a hole in the back of the cabinet for breathing, and several inches on all sides of it.

Hmm.

Good to know you're good with the surge protector. If the cabinet doesn't have a door that could be okay but I know mine sits out in the open and notice it runs pretty hot. Can only imagine how hot it must get in a cabinet that's closed. Don't know about the Amazon warranty since I've never purchased a high end electronic on Amazon. If anyone else can answer that question it would be nice. I do know Sony has a 1 year warranty on any new console so you should be set for a year at least.

the system comes with a 1 year warranty by Sony, if you purchase a new system from an authorized retailer.

Its generally a no-no for putting your gaming systems in an enclosed space. If you're gonna put it in a cabinet, at least leave the glass door open. If you were purchasing a 360, it'd probably die in less than a month's time if you put it in an enclosed space. For a PS3, it'd take longer, but its still a really bad idea.

The system actually shuts itself off after getting too hot, so you really just want to avoid getting to that point. You'll know if its really hot if the fans kick up like a loud ass vacuum.

So I at least get the one-year warranty, then? Is that a sure thing? If so, that's great, because that gives me a year to extend the warranty, something I'll definitely get around to. But in the meanwhile, I have at least a year-long warranty, correct?

Also, it's NOT a closed cabinet. The front is wide open at all times, and the back of the cabinet has a hole a couple inches tall and an inch wide. Plus, the front of the cabinet is 17 inches wide, so with a PS3 that's 12-13 inches across that leaves a couple inches on either side. And there's many inches above it, and quite a few inches behind it as well. It's quite open, relatively speaking. I hope it's good enough, because I don't really want to leave it outside.

Thanks again, and I hope you can answer my question about whether I get a one-year warranty by default.

Clearly, you've never seen or attended a focus group of any kind. LBP could never be the product of a focus group.

If it's a new console then its a 1 year warranty by default. Sorry if I wasn't more specific. I was talking about getting another warranty on top of the Sony automatic warranty to protect your investment.:D

I meant its aesthetic looks uninspired. The environments look photorealistic, which requires little imagination or fresh thinking. And the characters look typically Western, very Burton-esque, like something I'd find at Spencers or Hot Topic.

I don't mean to offend. I'm one of those "there is no reality, only perception" types, so things like how appealing something looks is purely subjective and, in this case, LBP doesn't work for me. Not yet, at least. Sometimes games look a helluva lot better once you play them. Then you get a feel for the spirit of the game and that breathes life into otherwise bland visuals.

EDIT: Redd, does the default warranty start the day I receive the console, or the day I bought it?

oh, well, since the fans are at the top and the back, you generally want to have as much space in the back as possible, at least, so have it creeping out just enough for air to circulate.

By the way, have you played any of the tomb raider games? In particular, have you tried the Tomb Raider Anniversary Wii version? If not, then I'd highly suggest picking it up for PS2, because its essentially Uncharted, but without the cover shooting mechanic, and not as many cutscenes. Its much longer than Uncharted, though, and has more platforming. Definitely worth picking up, IMO, if for just a taste of what Uncharted is like.

Edit: Also, I don't think the warranty can be extended, though I think you pay for repairs.

As for when the warranty starts, I imagine that's based on your purchase date, since that's what would be on your receipt, or whatever you get from Amazon as proof of purchase.

That's a good idea. I'll keep it at the very front of the cabinet -- maybe even eclipsing the front edge a bit while in use, then I can tuck it back in when turned off.

Well, I've played neither Uncharted nor Tomb Raider, so I don't have a reference point here. I appreciate the suggestion, but right now I'm focusing on PS3 games only. I'm sure you can understand; I just bought a PS3 so I'd like to see what next-gen games are like. For now, it's all about MGS4, GTA4 and Bioshock. I'll definitely download the Uncharted demo, too, even though I know a demo is a mere taste and nothing to properly judge a game by.

Ah yes, that'd make sense. Excellent.

Is the front of the cabinet open, or does it have doors? If it's open, you'll be fine. My launch 60gig PS3 is in a space that sounds about as big as yours, but the front is open, so it gets plenty of cool air and is quiet as long as the house is below 73 degrees or so. On a hot summer day those fans will kick in loud, but they would do that whether it was in the cabinet or not.

If your space is closed in, with a closed door, then you're going to have problems. You'll definitely want to leave it open during gameplay.

Edit, and BUY UNCHARTED ALREADY!! It's SUPERB. :D

Yes, this is how I have mine. I have it right at the edge. I've had mine inside the cabinet and outside, and I noticed no difference in fan volume, so it gets good ventilation that way. You'll be fine, especially since MGS4 PS3 is a cooler running PS3 than the 60gig.

Actually, there are no doors, so the front is open at all times, and there should be at least several inches of open space behind it, and a hole in the back wall as well. In other words, similar to yours, albeit a 80GB (not sure if that makes a difference). And the house is air-conditioned, so the room should always be cool.

It just occurred to me that since the cabinet is right on the ground, I could just pull the system out and let it sit on the carpet in front of the cabinet if I notice it getting too hot. I think the PS3 power cable and HDMI cable are long enough to accomodate the system moving forward a foot.
