Wii U Buyer's remorse thread

Wii U is barely out of the gates and already a bloodthirsty throng is lining up to murder it. Come on, people, GAF IS BETTER THAN THIS. Have some patience. Sheesh!

His opinions are very reasonable and valid with others' experience. I don't see how this is "bloodthirsty".

Reading his post is almost exactly what I would have found myself thinking. I've enjoyed many launches, and the only slightly disappointing one was the 3DS so far. SNES, PS1, Dreamcast, PS2, Genesis, Xbox, Xbox 360 and even the PS3 had some great games or at least one game I could get lost in. It was a bitch to fight the hype as I usually buy every new console at or near launch but I felt the Wii U would have left me wanting and by reading most of the threads about the system it seems I'm justified. As well as looking at the games (not a fan of minigames at all and I still haven't finished NSMB on the Wii) If you are a grade A Nintendo fan, it's a wonderful thing (or sublime, or amazing, or revolutionary as has been mentioned) but for the average gamer who might already have a 360/PS3/PC ... it seems to be nothing special.

So a thread is only justified if 90% of NeoGAF users agree with the opinions expressed in the OP?

I think the price really limited the buyers like me who were slightly interested and maybe would have bit at $250 ... maybe. So I think a majority of the actual owners are going to be big Nintendo fans who will find great joy in the system. Nothing wrong with that, but I think dissenting opinions on a more expensive system like this is going to be more rare as the cost of entry is above most people's 'buy it on a whim' level. I'm not surprised most opinions of the system on this forum are more positive then negative as most of the people that purchased it really, really like Nintendo.

I hope you didn't buy a Wii U at launch because it had no games you were interested in and thought it would make a good media player.
I bought one thinking they'd be hard to come by so, by the time I wanted one, I wouldn't have to go nuts to find one. So I'm kind of regretting it now that I have one and demand is so low and the only decent thing in its future is Pikmin 3. The PS3's saving grace when it had no games was that it was a competent media player. What's the Wii U's?

With regards to the barren 2013 release schedule, I agree that the lack of announcements is a bit worrisome. However, I'd wait up until E3 before totally giving up on the Wii U. There will no doubt a a couple of big announcements this year that will make Wii U owners happy.

There's tons of things Nintendo could do with the Wii U. Have its OS work more efficiently, refine their e-shop, work with NNID tethered to the console and etc... but I am pretty happy with what I got so far. NSMBU and Nintendo Land are pretty beast titles and once I beat those two fully in their single player stuff fully I'll jump in and buy a few more other titles like Zombi U and a few of the launch titles, bad ports and all. =p

What I really do feel Nintendo needs to address right away is their e-shop pricing. I'm sure Steam is going to start their yearly winter falls in a few days and am sure MS and Sony's DD shops will have sales... I'm certain that any other outfit that has a DD shop will be having winter sales... every body except Nintendo. Nintendo of America had some deals going for a month or two early in the summer... it was because of that I bought Pushmo, Sakura Samurai, VVVVVVV, Mighty Switch Force and etc. They should REALLY do that even if it pisses off retail. I say this because I don't mind going digital on a Nintendo console because I'm confident Nintendo will fix their issues with NNID in the future... but they really should host more sales in the future. That's my biggest issue with the Wii U so far. Other than that, I personally feel its great stuff. And Miiverse is god like, of course. Wonderful community of people and their awesome drawings. (:

I'm sitting here, sipping my freshly brewed hazelnut coffee, wondering what you were thinking dropping $600+ on this launch. Normally I'd say you were caught up in the hype, but what hype was there? You could see this coming from a mile away. It's been a disaster of a launch and this coming year may even be worse based on the paltry line-up of games. Even if they announce Mario v.25 and Kart v.17 for the Fall it'll still be bad. I don't see how anything Ninty could announce at E3 will dramatically improve 2013's outlook because third-parties have abandoned ship...actually I'm not sure they ever got on in the first place.

RE: regrets
I regret convincing my mom two buy two of these to resell. She kept telling me it wouldn't be worth it (and she knows nothing about games) and she was right. Never defy your mother. Worst thing is I was gonna use most of the money to buy her something really nice for Xmas, but now I gotta get her a cheap 'sentimental' gift.

Off TV play is now going to be a standard expectation
I don't think this will be the case, especially if the Wii U doesn't take off, which is becoming more and more likely.

Way too early to regret anything for me. System has been out what, 3-4 weeks now? I haven't even had enough time to really play it like I want to and I'm sure there will be many surprises in the future that will be worth the price of admission.

Then they shouldn't have pushed them so hard during their own conference. Nintendo set the expectation, it wasn't just consumer optimism.

pretty much. I'm not going to lie, I was really expecting to use the OTP feature with the third party multi platform games.

You clearly haven't played one and your mum got what she deserved.

I'm enjoying Zombi U. Problem is that my machine will probably go untouched for months after I finish that. I'll start to regret my purchase if something I want isn't announced by, say, March and then released by June or so.

You clearly haven't played one and your mum got what she deserved.
Nor did I indicate as such in my post. It was broad and about the future, not anything specific like slow OS or what have you. I think it's fair to look at the current line-up and what the future line-up seems to be and form an opinion.

I really don't understand how someone can spend 300-350$ on something without having some idea of what they're getting. In this case, when you are buying a nintendo product, you pretty much know exactly what to expect by now.
But even then, the system hasn't even been out a month. Its pretty early to make any sort of call on how it will end up overall. Considering the other HD consoles had considerable teething problems too, I think people might want to lower their expectations of a console right out of the gate.

Its the first time I come to a nintendo console release where I was pretty meh.

Maybe thats why I like it so much now.
Love the controller, its has perfect button placement, the button feel great and even being that big (I love the screen) is comfortable. And the play while watching anything on the TV. I cant wait for RPG's to start flowing, if I could play Xenoblade in this thing... wow.
The three games I already have (NSMBU, Zombi U and NIntendo Land) are really great. Ive beaten NSMBU and ZombiU and they were really good, maybe I beat again Zombi U trying to go with one survivor only, something I thought I would never do, and not many times I beat a game twice becuase of my huge backlog.

Then there Nintendo Land, the game I hated before getting it, of course I still get some qualms about it (about using and idea about making a theme park and dont make it to the fullest) but it suprised me greatly, IN ALL DEPARTMENTS. Graphically is beautiful to look at, the music is amazing, and the gameplay is the arcade made modern, hard, long and will suck your life instead of your coins. Then there is the multiplayer that is amazingly fun.

And then there is the amazing Miiverse. It works as a really helpfull community full of talented people. And drawing your achivements is great.

I'm sure the system will improve over time. Looking back to 2008 when I first got my PS3, the system has come such a long way since. I don't know if Nintendo is as open to changing such large pieces of their system as Microsoft or Sony, but we will see.

And the second part, let me get this straight: You were gonna use the money your mom tried to make by reselling Wii Us? This story is so f'ed I'm literally in tears here. You both got what you deserved. Merry christmas! :DD

I wouldn't say I regret buying a Wii U, I just really should have waited. I wound up trading in my 3DS + the 3 games I had for it, and an old 1G iPod Touch I hadn't used in 2+ years and got $220 trade in credit through Gamespot, so my basic Wii U only cost like $100 with tax. I did this the day they started taking preorders figuring I'd get it in and not have to worry about camping out for 1 come launch day. I had hoped they'd announce some new upcoming releases to entice me and I was also banking on the tech in the system being at least a step above what PS360 offered. Sadly, they didn't and the system is not as powerful as I had hoped it would be.

And this is not just the normal launch hype followed by a drought, I've purchased almost every home console starting with the SNES on launch day (Wii and PS3 are the only 2 I missed day 1) and I've never been so meh on a console this quickly. Every one of those consoles offered something that I looked forward to in the future, but so far I've only bought NSMBU, which is great, and the next game I'll probably buy will be Bayonetta 2 :(

I gamefly'd ZombiU since the concept seemed great but I'm not a huge fan of survival horror style games and I'm really glad I only rented it. The janky controls and numerous glitches and just general weird shit that happened in the ~5 hours I played of it turned me off. The atmosphere was great, but struggling with the controls and the fact that I had almost no fun while actually playing it made me quickly stop and never want to play again.

This is not Nintendo's fault, I really should have just cancelled my preorder and waited for more games to come out.

I don't see how one can ever put themselves in a situation where they would have buyer's remorse for the Wii U, or any platform for that matter. Sure you can end up disappointed, but it's far too soon for that. As an example ultimately i may have felt slightly let down by the Wii, but i would never say i regret it or feel remorse. It still had several games I couldn't play elsewhere that were worth it, never mind the initial entertainment my family and I had with Wii Sports. I couldn't even fathom missing out on the likes of Xenoblade and other's

If you're feeling buyer's remorse now, than that means you weren't fully confident of the system/library beforerhand. If that's the case, why on earth would you buy it? Why not wait until you know you'll be satisfied with it? I'm quite interested in Wii U, but I know it hasn't got enough going for it right now for me. I'll wait till the library is competent enough and then jump in. There's no way I'll ever have buyer's remorse for when I eventually get my Wii U

It's similar to the Vita. People may deny it, but a lot of people ended up regretting their purchase and selling it later because they are worried about it's future. Why did they buy it then? I mean I only bought the Vita recently once i knew there were enough games to justify it.

If you're unsure about a system beforehand, you shouldn't get it. If the library isn't nig enough for your tastes, you shouldn't get it. Unless you know it's gonna be worthwhile, you shouldn't get it. People who have these feelings and still buy a platform and end up with buyer's remorse can only blame themselves. Wait till the system is good enough for you, and then buy it

No direct numbers, especially none from Nintendo which is a sign in and of itself, but if the percentage of bundles bought held true for the 2nd week as it did the first, you can deduce a range of sales from Nintendolands chart placement, and it aint good. Estimates are its sold like 60k including the launch and 2nd week I believe.
Ouch. So about 4k a day Monday to Friday then (or does that include this Saturday and Sunday just gone as well? In which case around 2.85k a day).

I have no idea if that's considered decent, but I doubt it. I hope for the people who've bought one that sales pick up, because as a day 1 Vita owner I've discovered first hand that lack of sizeable userbase = lack of games.

Ouch, one thing I have learned is to never trade in a system, unless you are upgrading it (3DS > 3DSXL, Wii > Wii U, etc.).

It is never worth it in the end.

Your mom had to buy you the consoles you wanted to flip, and now her Christmas gift will suffer as a result?

The amount of wii-u threads on gaf that focus on the negative than positive makes this thread a tad redundant

this thread (and recent nintendoland ones) have kinda shifted back the other way, though...anecdotal, but i see more people talking positive than negative, universal stuff like OS speed aside.

besides, i don't think any of the other negative threads was on about buyer's remorse specifically

What does his mom have to do anything with this? He asked for her money to do the reselling, and she hesitated but provided it.

To Heavy: Scalping like that is bad when you have no damn clue about it. With that said, can't you return them to store and get your money back?!

Other than that excruciating initial set-up and the woefully, embarrassingly slow UX, Wii U has been almost exactly what I expected. Oh, and I've had ZERO hard locks as well.

I didn't care since I hardly ever used my 3DS and as little as I'll use my Wii U in the coming months, it will still get way more use than a 3DS ever would for me. The only time my 3DS left my house was when I took it to Gamestop to trade it in.

I can't help but feel the same way as the OP. However, I'm more optimistic (probably more than i should be). I think Nintendo will fix these things out. Maybe all of these problems won't be ironed out 100 percent, but I'm sure we will see some fixes to the ungodly sluggish OS, and E3 will most likely have some big surprises for us. I'm expecting big things at E3. They've been holding off for a while, and the only logic I see in them holding out on showing anything new is to deter attention from the two competitors when they unveil they're next generation consoles this E3 as well.

Yes, the software library at the moment looks meek, but I'm in college and working a full-time job, I barely have the time to play the Wii U as I did when I was much younger. And I've already planned out my purchasing schedule for the new year up until March/April, so I'll be okay. I'm not the kind to be buying six games at once. I'd go crazy. I like to space out my purchases so that I can dedicate time to each game, and pick up the next when I'm ready.

What...
Reread the post, it was my idea to flip them not hers, just asked to use her CC. She didn't even know what a Wii U was

Your mom had to buy you the consoles you wanted to flip, and now her Christmas gift will suffer as a result?
Pretty much yeah, I don't have enough money to get something nice i am unemployed.

I did last week.

And yes I know scalping is a sleezy thing to do. I'm not a bad guy tho.

No remorse here, freaking love mine. Remote play is the future. Curl up in bed with a full console on one of the most perfect controllers Nintendo's ever made? Heck yes.

Plus, the Miiverse is surprisingly cool. Great artists on there, and the way they integrated the community with the games (letting you comment with others in Mario, etc.) is fun.

Anybody criticizing this thing over launch frame rates is completely going to miss what it does well, and what nobody else really does.

Miiverse alone has been great for me. I've spent several hours just going through posts, doing my best to help out those that need it, commenting on artistic posts (including getting to show off my terrible japanese to some of the new Japanese players), and organizing matches on AssCreed 3.

I can understand some people's disappointment and I don't begrudge them it. It's not especially hard to resell a Wii U right now and only lose out a little in the process, the door will always be open for you to try again once Bayonetta 2 is out ;)

Looks like people who have actually played it have a more positive opinion about it, aside from the perfectly warranted complaints of the slow OS, load times, etc.

This post might fly if it wasn't for the many, many people who are posting in this thread saying how much they are enjoying the Wii U. You are applying your perception of something you don't own and judging those who do by your own opinions. That's really, really silly.

Massive buyers remorse here. I learnt nothing from my launch 3DS purchase (sold it within a few days). But I mostly thought that I wasnt a handheld gamer, turns out Nintendo really hasnt got anything to offer me any longer except zelda. Im currently using the wii u browser to try to justify the purchase. I blame myself, I saw this coming but I had $300 credit at EB Games, all I had to do was fork over a few dollars for a new generation console. The 2013 line up is depressing.

I dunno, just looking at the responses it seems like almost everybody disagrees with him. Overwhelmingly the people criticizing it didn't actually manage to buy one to have remorse over. And the primary criticism seems to be with the Q1 release list, as if that's not going to change.

I definitely don't regret my purchase. I'm greatly enjoying the off-screen play capabilities and the Miiverse functionality and I'm looking forward to what the future holds.

I must be very lucky with regards to system lock-ups, I only experienced one when I changed the orientation of the console, and post-second update, I haven't experienced it again.

And yes, Nintendo is being stupidly, frustratingly quiet regarding the 2013 games, but absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

Anyone who buys a Nintendo console expecting the same third party support as the other two consoles gets what they deserve at this point.

You buy it for Nintendo and the few third party exclusives it will get.

Fell for it with the Wii, didnt fall for it with WiiU, wont fall for it with WiiU+ (now in green and red!)

However, you should give it more than month or two

Q1 titles still have vague release dates and Pikmin slid to June possibly. There's still no peep about VC on the WiiU either.

If nintendo has secret titles for 2013, they need to announce them. What benefit do they gain from waiting while 2013 looks shitty.
