Totally worth noting that Arkham City is an Unreal Engine 3 game, yeah. EA's CEO also mentioned BF3 and Frostbite on the thing (along with some twittly-bop about the systems online functionality that I'm surprised more people didn't notice. Guess everyone was still daydreaming about Miyamoto's muscles :P). Signs point to this system being the equal or even the superior of anything out right now (and that shouldn't BE a surprise to anyone with a brain in his or her head, it's 2011 now fucktards!). My guess as to why we didn't get a massive blowout on software is that Nintendo wanted to let the 3rd parties make their own announcements rather than try to crowd it all into their show, so they just gave us some name software to tide us over. Hell, how many people said they wanted a Smash Brothers announcement to be happy? They got it (WiiU and 3DS both). Darksiders 2 as a launch title and Tekken coming to a Nintendo home console for the first time ever isn't enough for some of you? We probably saw more blood spilled in that sizzle reel than we have ever seen at a Nintendo 3E showing. ;)
 
Didn't see it in the OP, but Madden was also mentioned in the press conference. They talked about having the play book on the controller, so you had full immersion on the television.

Reggie said that the control can be used in different rooms, but it was designed and created to be played in the same room. Therefore I'd expect it to work only not too far out of the room.

I was personally hoping the 6" screen controller rumor was false, leaving more room in Nintendo's costs for hardware that could potentially stomp all over PS3/360.

Considering Nintendos track record for releasing profitable hardware, even at launch, the controller + video streaming tech could certainly take away from the potential we'll actually see anything truly "superior" to the PS3/360. Either way they could have done more with CPU/GPU/RAM w/o the new controller at the same cost/price.

But we'll have to wait and see.. seems like Nintendo isn't entirely sure what the final hardware will be.

You can play it in bed if you have a tv in your bedroom :p but yeah I would think it would have some range.

Well devs are leaking that this machine is definitely more powerful. Really it is only a matter of how much. I've seen estimates from x2 to x5.
 
If it's backward compatible I might be down if they keep the price below $299. I haven't had a Wii for years and it would be an added incentive.

You have full immersion on the television while looking down at your 6" screened controller?

I don't get why it's being hyped that the screen can show something different than the TV. You can only really focus on one or the other.. I'd rather what was being shown on my TV just changed than having to look back and forth between TV and controller.

Seems like the only real "advantage" of the screen for more "standard" games that are trying to use it as an enhancement will be the fact that it's a touch screen.

If picking my plays is better on a touch screen than using a controller + TV then it makes Madden better.

I could see it being pretty awesome for inventory/spell/character management in an RPG for example. Times when I'd be looking away from the "action" in the game anyways, but using a controller isn't really the best method for input.
 
The main question that hasn't been answered is if you can use more than one WiiU controller at a time. If you have to use old Wiimotes for multiplayer games, how will that work with existing and upcoming 3rd party games?

In the video after the conference they showed people doing 4 player with Wii U controllers.

Yeah it's promising for sure.. they still could have done more w/o the other costs was my point. They'd have to try hard not to at least surpass the capabilities of the 360 for example.

To truly be the next go to machine for multi-platform titles it's going to need a good online system though.. it will be interesting to see what Nintendo reveals about online.

I was HOPING performance + online would be Nintendos FOCUS with this machine... then it would surely stomp all over the 360/PS3.. the controller has potential to take away some of that focus.. even if it's merely the fact that it adds cost.

If it can run multiple WiiU controllers at once w/ full screen functionality, then there Press Release on the subject is worded pretty poorly.

The player using the new controller can have a different experience than those looking at the TV.

Press Releases aren't often written by people that lack grammar skills. I don't see why a "new controller" can't act as a classic controller but they all but say "only one new controller at a time" in the PR when it comes to using the screen.

Perhaps they haven't made a final decision on the matter.. a system that can stream video to multiple controllers is more expensive than a system that can only stream to one controller.
 
Actually nvm, that video I was talking about showed 1 person with the Wii U controller and the rest using regular wiimotes. Sorry!

Anyway the spec sheet says it supports the CC and CCPro so I imagine those will be used for multiplayer games if in fact you can only use one WiiU controller at a time.
 
So will it play Blu-ray movies or not?

I would love to have another Blu ray player for another room as a bonus.

Also, lol at everyone seeing game footage on the WiiU with not even finalized hardware, and games not even optimized for the system yet.

If the games look better than PS3/360 already like it does (especially that CF3 footage too), then i'm pretty sure that's a great starting point, and will go infinitely beyond that. Look at where we started in 2004 and look where we are now.

I'm SO excited for this system. Can't wait to buy it!

Yep, and that's what I'm worried about. How will it work with multiplayer if you can only use 1 Wiiu controller, frankly the old Wiimotes just don't cut it, especially for third party games? This is my biggest concern and I hope it gets addressed. Even if you can only stream to 1 controller at a time, it would have to let you use more than one Wiiu controller right?
 
I'm at work and couldn't have the volume turned on but I did see Ken Levine talking about Wii U. What did he say? Is Bioshock Infinite coming to Wii U? Or maybe Bioshock Vita is a Wii U - Vita project?
 
If good games are shown for it, why not? I'll buy it. It's fully backwards-compatible with the Wii. I lose nothing but, in worst case, some money for selling my Wii for its backwards-compatible successor.

But if it ends up not getting any quality software for a few years I'll feel pretty jipped, lol.

He just said he's very interested in it, and interested in the new possibilities it opens him up to as a developer. Also he's excited that he can play hardcore games in his bed with headphones on while his wife sleeps. He's excited that he's no longer limited by the TV as to when he can play games in his house.

If my guess is any good, chances are he has ideas, and yeah, we'll probably get Bioshock Infinite on the WiiU.

I really don't see why not.. but you could also buy the classic controller. According to PR the Wii-U controller is a classic controller + screen/gyroscope/camera.

Nintendo is just a strange company.. they have a chance here to hype the Wii U as being a valid competitor for the 360/PS3 but they of course are focusing on their "innovation." So instead of mentioning that your standard multi-platform games can work with classic controller, they bring up this oddball idea of having one Wii-U controller + everyone else having Wii-motes... as if that's something that is going to get heavy support.

I think we'll have to rely on 3rd parties hyping the possibility of Wii-U being worthy as a true "next gen" system for the hardcore gamer.. some early reports are certainly suggesting that.. but to me it seems like we'll really have to wait and see what Nintendo does with Online.

I can't see it toppling the 360 as the priority system for games like Call of Duty for example unless they have a real Live/PSN type service.

Hmmm based on what you said I think it'll be more Bioshock Vita. He did say he and the team have had unique ideas for a new game for awhile and just didn't know where to put the game, the perfect platform. Vita and WiiU controller share many similarities.

No price, just unveiling the hardware and capabilities. No specs.
Expect to see more if they do a summit in October again, and GDC.
Reggie says it won't launch until after Fiscal year 2011 (March 2012)

Also for those worried about the price... Think about it. They know what kind of market they're in, and they know what kind of audience they have. It's blatantly obvious the system will be sold at a reasonable price point to appeal more to their entire audience, considering that they're keeping the Wii branding as the brand itself has a lot of power. While I think the name sucks, they're very smart in the naming as it will be considerably easier to sell the system with the power of the Wii brand.

It's a console that will come out next year and most likely at Q3 or 4. Why announce the price now?

Thanks for the answer. I'm definitely excited for the new system and wonder how developers will use the new controller.

Also, is the screen on the controller a touch screen? I saw that picture with Zelda on the TV screen and the inventory on the controller. It would be sweet to just touch the item I want without bringing up the inventory screen and have Link switch to that item.
 
Is the Design of the WiiU Final? Nintendo was a little bit hesitate to show it on the actual conference, so I wonder if they really get it this small...

It's about half way house between a PS2 and a PS2 slim, impressive! Almost the same height as the Wii.

Not sure about touch screen. But it does have a sensor bar around the camera if you'd want to prop the screen up on a table infront of you.

But not this far away, ok?

It should be able capable of BC games which use CC or horizontal Wiimote only, but I'm not sure they've confirmed anything yet.
 
I pray that the other console giants don't feel compelled to rip off this ungodly controller. Just what I need, a stack of eight ridiculous tablet things under the coffee table.
