Wii U: new firmware update released (5.2.0) - Folders!

Don't really need folders on Wii U, but good to have it there. Know there's people out there with a lot more digital games than me on Wii U, so glad Nintendo made it an option. :)

Folders are ace and very welcome but one thing I really don't like about this update is that it makes using the Home button to exit a bit slower and less convenient. Before, when hitting the home button in a game or app, you'd immediately get a large Close/exit button that you could then quickly move your right hand/finger up to and press. Now if you're in an app like the browser, the Close/exit button is smaller and placed to the left, while a pointless button for the Manual is to the right. It's even worse in VC games:

Maybe it's just me but I find this new placement really uncomfortable as it requires you to either first hit the Home button, then move your right hand/finger all the way to left of the Gamepad just to close your game/app or hit the Home button and then move your left hand/thumb/finger to the right. Before it was just two quick, smooth motions with the same hand. Also, the "Resume" button is pointless when you can just push the Home button itself if you change your mind about closing something.

me...

basically, 9/10 times I launch something from the quick start menu cause a frozen WiiU logo and endless looping music :(

Sorry to hear that man, nothing another "Stability Update" won't fix though. I'm sure Nintendo can push that out quick, I will check around Miiverse and see many others are having the same issue.

Seems a bit nitpicky to me but then again, shit like this bothers people.

I can't understand it but even many were so happy when they made the "next race" option the first option in the Mario Kart update.

It was odd that it was the second option but it didn't phase me one iota.

Haha, they call ALTTP "Link to past" on the Wii U? Sounds like something that was translated and then back again.

No need to get so defensive, I just opined that moving a space over is not a big deal to me.

Conversely you didn't need to come off as salty yourself when you shrugged it off as "whatever, don't get why this stuff bothers people." Otherwise I agree with you, it's not a huge deal but it's still not as comfortable as the old placement in my opinion. I've tried to get used to it but still doesn't feel right.

Well, I'm not "salty" but sorry if it came off that way.

I implied that I might be in the minority on the issue because things I consider next-to-nothing can affect others differently as my example stated.

As far as the change, I don't think it was necessary though it looks slightly better(maybe because it's new) but they do little tweaks like that.

I am sure they have a reason even but this change seemed like they just wanted to do something different.

They made some very subtle changes(like now, there is a little disc sticking out of the icons in the quick start menu for retail games---pretty sure it's new, maybe not) and none of them really affect the interface either way to me except maybe folders.

I made a quick video of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-grqMHP1sJk

My wife had to use both her hands to get the game to fully close, but on the other side of it, she didn't have to reach her right hand to the middle of the screen to close it like before. To each his own I guess, but for me this is more of an improvement due to the added options.

So anyone having new quick launch problems. Does disabling and re-enabling help here. I remember first update I would get "the quick star menu isn't read" any time I'd boot up.

I'm still waiting on full range RGB. I can't believe it's still not in nearly two years after launch. *Shakes fist*
That is one thing you can't deny about the Gamepad. It is useful to calibrate the picture using. I'm a touch over saturated now though :(

I think it's just a matter of time to get used to it. The addition of the manual is nice, it makes sense to be aple to open it while playing the game.

For some reason mine won't respect the list in settings of software not to display on the quick launch screen. I have miiverse and wii chat set not to show up but they just do anyway. Does the wii u take that list as a mere suggestion or something?

I made my lists:

1. Nintendo (apps and stuff to hide away)
2. NES
3. SNES
4. GBA
5. N64
6. eShop

... And the lists were good. PS4's turn. Counter-update like it was MS with 3D Blu-Ray!!

The qs menu on the gamepad is updated periodically during standby.. give it some time.

I'm glad they moved it. When I first got the Wii U I can't tell you how many times I accidentally closed a game when trying to go back to it. I got used to it, but literally every person I've played with has done the same accidentally when playing... It was in a terrible location.

Yes! Many of my friends and family would do the same. Best change of the update!

Agreed now that I think about it. Have nearly closed some games by accident on multiple occasions.

Maybe the should replace the "close" with "quit" because close could refer to closing this menu. Just saying.

Which is where my mind always goes, and I've closed many games. I'm glad they moved the button off to the side. At least now I have to stop and think.

It's pretty obvious they assume that you typically open the home menu to access Miiverse or the browser, not to close the software, so they moved the corresponding buttons closer to the home button.

Does anyone know a good way to clear the Download Management screen menu without loading up every game or app that's received an update? There's an option to delete, but that means to delete the update (I believe) and not just the notification on that menu. It's annoying that every time I boot up the machine it tells me new software updates were downloaded, but I'd have to insert all my disc games to flush it. I was hoping the new firmware would address this but it doesn't appear to have been considered.

Can confirm this. Last night it was still showing parental settings, but I just checked this morning and it's now removed.

I disagree, the old placement was prone to accidental closing and it`s no problem at all to reach the current placement.

When you turn your system off, after a minute or so, it will go into standby, and the yellow light will turn on for a few minutes. When it turns off, the QS screen will have been updated.

Kinda hoped folders would show icons of what's inside 'em like Vita. I'm not sure I even want to use folders, though I happily shoveled all my last page's contents into a "bullshit" folder.

Is spotpass enabled for the affected titles? Or is that not related at all?

I just noticed another new function of the new firmware: you can now enter into Wii mode with your HDMI connected set turned off.

Click the Wii icon, and you'll get the standard prompt about "Aim a Wii Remote at the screen" -- but you don't need to. Just press the + button on the Wii Remote and you'll enter Wii mode directly, using just the Gamepad screen.

So I have been thinking about the changes to the home menu, and whilst I agree that the wording of the old "Close HOME Menu" bar at the bottom could cause confusion, its new placement in the middle of the screen is not as convenient/easy to reach as the old position (Although "Resume" is a much better name for it)

So I have made a quick mockup how I think Nintendo should have the Home Menu laid out:-
WiiUHomeMockup.jpg

IMO it would make a lot more sense to have 'Exit Software' and 'Resume' in the bottom corners of the screen, since its much more convenient. I also removed Nintendo TVii and replaced it with System Settings (Although TVii could still exist as a standard app)

Thoughts?

^ I disagree with this because the instant access apps (eShop, Browser) etc. are more important than those three icons, so putting them directly above the Home button is preferred. I'm glad they moved them there. And then, to close the software, you press the button and move up a ways to the left side - ie there's no chance for accidentally clicking it.

Like this, specially the "exit" part because it is in fact less ambiguos.

Do you know what would be super usefull? In that "Exit software" virtual button embed a small area with an "eject" icon that appears when the game is been played on a disk. That way when pressing that small area it closes the game and automatically ejects the disk. This simple idea would be really convenient.

Oh darn. I'm a week late to finding out about this (spending more time on OT these days, and my wife usually has the Wii U for Netflix, although I'm trying to get her to switch over to ChromeCast), but...

This is HUGE!

I know, this is something that should have been there Day 1.
There's no excuse why it wasn't.

But, I am absolutely THRILLED that Folders are finally here.

Finally, I can organize my jumbled mess of a menu system.
Finally

Another new not documented feature (as far as i know) of the new update is that the console will remember the UI status for each screen after turn it off. It wasn't like that previously.
