Wii U: new firmware update released (5.2.0) - Folders!

Or Nintendo reads their Club Nintendo surveys. I and many others have been mentioning folders in the CN surveys for 2 years now.

SPOILERS: They read the CN surveys. Make sure to fill them out with real information.
That too. Although, while I haven't been bitchin' about folders on Club Nintendo (I emailed them directly telling them why not having folders already is ridiculous), I do fill out all my surveys of VC games telling them how shitty VC is - specifically, NES games being blurry, no button mapping (on 3DS specifically), no N64 games, no smoothing options for SNES games, no crossbuy, no crossplay, and lack of titles overall.

So perhaps they'll listen.

Folders YEEEEES

I know they are not gonna bring every VC or Wiiware to Wii U mode so why not make a shortcut (like a channel forwarder) on Wii U menu for specific Wii games to launch directly without launching Wii Menu then SD Card Menu etc.?

You know like "create shortcut" a list of installed Wii games are shown, you select the title, a shortcut is created on Wii U Menu

That would be more life changer than bringing 1-2 sec optimization or more stability into our systems.

Because of security reasons
Creating shortcuts and "channel forwarder" would be like leaving a backdoor open for exploits, hacks and whatnot.
Wii mode in Wii U is enclosed. Meaning the only way to enter the Wii menu is through the "Wii" button and vice versa when you want to leave this mode. It's a controlled area/exit if you like.
When you go to Wii mode, the console literally turns into a Wii. That's why Homebrew and all the other unofficial apps still work.

Turned on my Wii U today to download the update. Just realized it was already installed. Wat? So the Wii U is the only console to date that's doing updates on its own and unattended. I'm impressed.

btw: when starting my Wii U via the Gamepad it's only working half of the time. It turns blue but there's n signal to tv and gamepad. After a few seconds the Gamepad switches to "no signal". Anyone had this problem?

Folder icons display full words!

I like the redesigned home screen too. Haven't checked the new Quick Start options, but if Nintendo got 3/3...

Plus, if the Wii U gets any more stable, I'm going to use it to prop up a table.

Had the same situation earlyer today. After reading GAF, the update was already done. Also a few days back when netflix launched in Germany my WiiU installed the netflix app all by itself and unasked. I was pretty surprised, because I didn't even know netflix would launch in Germany. The auto-download and install is a great feature.

DS Mode on 3DS works the same way, but Nintendo still figured out how to keep dsiware on the main menu, support the circle pad, and put dsiware in the eShop instead of having two shops. They could have done it for Wii U and probably still could fix it with an update.

Unlike the Wii the dsi was never hacked, considering the levels to which the Wii was piratedand hacked I don't blame them for putting up a great big brick wall around anything to do with the Wii on the Wii U

Ahh folders at last! now comes a new predicament; Do i have a folder for each system? do i have a virtual console folder with them all in & WiiU software folder (like i did on my 3DS),

and then do i sort by release date? Alphabetical order? Genre?

ahh the problems of an OCD nintendo fan!

you know they could solve my personal issues by allowing sub folders within folders....Damn you nintendo why don't you fulfill my personal needs? :p

now back to loot finding on post patch Destiny

Like frankie_baby said, DSi was never hacked so it probably was way easier to integrate BC onto 3DS OS without worrying too much about any possible exploit than what it was for Wii U and Wii.
To be honest, they took a huge risk including Wii BC and I honestly don't blame them for confining the entire Wii ecosystem.
Wii U is already in bad shape. The last thing Nintendo needs right now is "lol Wii U hacked thanks to Wii exploit"

The homebrew guys (Marcan and co.) already had an exploit ready to go after just a few months anyway, so the sandbox was pretty useless in that respect. They just held it back since a Wii U jailbreak would probably just be used to enable piracy and not to create homebrew.

In any case they could have still done some basic integration while keeping their leaky sandbox. For instance, the Wii mode already runs a modified version of Wii firmware, and the system transfer procedure already shows that the WiiU system software can write files onto the Wii Mode NAND. They could have modified it a bit more, for instance the Wii u could write a small file when it switches to the Wii mode and then the Wii firmware could skip the menu and go right into a game. Homebrew already allowed booting straight into a game and bypassing the Wii Menu, so Nintendo could have done something similar.

I'd say Wii mode just wasn't a high priority for them, but it's a bit confusing since they did add the gamepad screen support...

To this day I'm not convinced marcan's exploit was as anywhere like as expoiltable as he suggested it was

The Wii was Nintendo's first implementation of downloadable games. DSiWare came a couple of years later and was most likely more well suited to backwards compatibility than Wiiware. For starters, Nintendo would need to create Wii U-compatible icons for every Wiiware and Wii VC game since the Wii banners have a very different format, whereas DSiWare icons were just square animated gifs and could fit well with the 3DS menu.

Also, the "ownership" of software on the Wii was quite poor. The DSi was quite more robust in that regard (it was possible to get refunds, for example) and it was probably easier to integrate into the 3DS eShop.

Does it seem to anyone else that the OS is now really slow, especially switching between menus? It literally takes 15 seconds to switch back to the main menu from settings, for example (I counted it because it seemed to take ages). I can't remember if it was just bad like that before or if it's worse now (It's always been slow, I know). Damn thing's worse than the PS store on a PS3!

I like how the Wii U now remembers the screen displayed on the TV, e.g.: when turning on the console it shows me the wara wara plaza on the gamepad and the games on the TV because that's the way it was set last time.

Nice find!
Now if only I could get rid of the wara wara plaza altogether :( Just show me the games on both the tv and gamepad and make the wara wara plaza an app.

Has anyone seen a full list of what the gamepad is required for including apps and system functions? I know we can use pro controller now for the eshop, but can we do everything system wide with the pro controller and/or wii remote?

wat?
It's the opposite for me

I noticed this as well! It's a very nice little addition.

How is this relevant? You could get refunds on the Wii as well. The Last Ninja 3 is the only known instance of where it was generally offered (game was broken, emulator triggers anti piracy code and crashes the game after the first level) and boy did Nintendo and everyone else drag their heels there (NOE first flat out refused to believe the game was broken, taking the complaint to Trading Standards required publication proof of it so Nintendo Life modified their review to reflect the game being broken...wait, why didn't Nintendo Life notice this in their first review...could it be they didn't play the VC release?)

Speaking of which the only DSi refund I know of was Dragona getting a refund on art style base 10 as it has no left handed mode.

The DSi Shop might be more capable of individual license revoking as the system transfer app lets you choose individual titles but that may have been a result of so many games missing at eShop launch.

Foldrs are nice but now my wii u menu looks bare lol since all games are in folders and not scattered about everywhere.

I just wish you coukd have an icon for folders. NES logo, SNES logo, GBA etc as thats how my virtual console games are sorted.

THIS IS

EXCITING
This also means that the TV doesn't have to be on to start a remote play session using the Wii mode and the gamepad. Very nice as it was annoying before to have to turn the TV on or switch the output type to Component instead of HDMI before playing.

(Why doesn't Nintendo include these changes in the release notes?)

I lov folders, now it is way easier to navigate through my stuff. I also like the colors of the folders and the fact that I can type a good amount of characters to name them.

This was basically the first update in a long time to have an actual changelog (and look not a stability joke in sight...oops I mentioned the s word). I'm guessing the change happened in an older firmware and since it isn't a change for this firmware.

oooo, that's actually pretty neat

Not 100% sure if this was there before the update, but another thing I noticed:

On Quick Start, the game that's loaded on disc on the console will have a disc "peeking" out of the icon.

I unpacked (leaving on a cross country tour of America before moving overseas for two years.) my Wii U just so that I could update, then created folders for eShop, Virtual Console, Streaming, apps, and system. I didn't notice the option to change colors, though... I'll have to unpack it again after work and color coordinate. I'm just glad the folders have visible names instead of single letter identifiers.

Just installed this update and whilst I like the folders, I am a bit annoyed by one of the changes:-
The Quick Start Menu will now display when the Wii U is powered on from the Wii U GamePad TV Remote
Please allow me to explain...

Previously when I wanted to play a game using only the GamePad I would press the GamePad power button and select the game using the Quick Launch menu.

When I wanted to play a game on my TV I would press the GamePad's TV remote button, press the "Play Wii U" button so that the console would start loading in the background, and then use the TV remote to turn on my TV, change the input and adjust the volume, after which I pressed "Close TV remote" and the Wii U would have already loaded to the main menu whilst I was messing about with the TV settings.

Now when I try the same thing the Wii U main menu doesnt load - the console just pauses on the "Wii U" logo screen and never loads the main menu, the system just sits there waiting for you to press "Close TV remote", after which the GamePad has to reset itself in order to load the Quick Launch menu - this actually take considerably longer that it does just to load the Wii U main menu.

The only way I have found to regain the lost functionality is by disabling the Quick Launch menu.

<TLDR> After this update if you have Quick Launch enabled selecting "Play Wii U" from the TV remote screen now just makes the console pause on the Wii U logo and the main menu never loads :/

Yes and that's normal. They leave once you start the updated games the first time.

Same goes to the "download/update completed" message on the gamepad btw
Took me a while to realise you had to start the specific app in order to get rid of the 'Data has finished downloading' message on the GamePad.

Its a bit annoying having to start every updated app just to clear your download list - it would make a lot more sense to have a 'Clear Download List' button in Downloads Management.

The text formatting on the folders is annoying. Took me a bit of tweaking to make the labels look decent.
Yeah I dont know why the folder naming cant be intelligent enough to know when a word wont fit entirely on the same line, and automatically display it on the line below.

For instance, naming a folder "Virtual Console" or "System Software" results in the second word being split into two when displayed on the folder icon, but you can actually make each word appear on its own seperate line by putting three spaces in between the words instead of just one.

...One last thing Nintendo (Just in case they monitor Gaf) Please can you remove Nintendo TVii from the 'quick launch' section? Its been almost two years and Nintendo TVii is still unusable in Europe. Just change it into a standard app like LoveFilm or Netflix, and replace its 'slot' with the System Settings wrench icon - this would make a lot of sense (Oh and make System Settings accessible when using Wii Remotes/Wii U Pro Controllers)

Hmm.

Maybe it's a gamepad / pro controller thing. I've been using the pro controller and can't press b to back out of folders.

I'll check the gamepad when im home after work.
B only works on the Gamepad. Since B is used to pick up icons with the Pro Controller, Wiimote, and Classic Controller, it doesn't go back. Gamepad uses the touch screen for this, so B does go back.

It'd be nice if there were an update to go back with B on the other controllers when you're not hovering over an icon, or to have proper line spacing on multiple words in the folder name, but it's no biggie.

If you use the dpad to select icons you can use B to back out, but if you move the cursor around with the analog stick B is used to grab an icon. Just hit a direction on the dpad and you should then be able to back out with the B button.

Yep, exactly this

I'm still waiting on full range RGB. I can't believe it's still not in nearly two years after launch. *Shakes fist*
