Wii U: new firmware update released (5.2.0) - Folders!

Yeah, the Nintendo Network servers appear to be down still, could be part of the Miiverse maintenance that's going on

It's been a long time.I tried using my Wii U at about 00:00 last night and I was getting the same error message and problem. Hopefully it will resolve itself but my patience is pretty low when a majority of features are disabled with no choice in the matter. Across two systems as well.

My WiiU firmware is 4.0.1 or something ancient, I tried updating and it had hung on 1% for aaaaages, I ended up turning the machine off. On reboot, it says I need to update and when I choose 'update' it will then freeze when it sends me to the system settings. I think I've borked my machine :(

Cancelling the update and then choosing any of the icons, like Browser, eShop etc will also make it hang :/

Did you turn it off while it was downloading the update or while it was installing?

It's working again for me now.

A long-expected update, great. I still can't help but be saddened at how excited people get over such a tiny addition though... we Nintendo fans really are deprived when it comes to anything regarding interesting new OS features.

Last time anything interesting happened was when the 3DS added those new Miiverse games... and those aren't even free (yes, I bought them :p)

I am so happy right now.

Reggie really does read GAF?

Many of us have been bitchin' about the lack of folders for over a year now.

The thirst was real.

Thank you based Nintendo.

Hmm...can you still reach the "Download Management" menu? If you can, see if you can delete the ongoing update download, if it's there. Maybe try starting the console without an internet connection.

I think I could, there wasn't anything downloading. Also tried booting up without an internet connection, it would still hang when trying to get into settings etc.

I've put in MK8 which asks for an update and left it on the 'getting update screen' before I left for work, we'll see when I get back if it worked. Thanks for the suggestions.

Try owning a PS4...

Question... is it possible for this update to download by itself... dont they have a feature like that on Wii U?
Yes. Just leave the system alone for a day or two and it should auto download the firmware update as long as standby mode is enabled in the settings.

You can also cancel the first dialog if it prompts you to download the update, and then it downloads in the background.

Yep. My Wii U was already updated before I saw this thread. Only thing I had to do was agree to their TOS again and was ready to go.

Hooray there is a fucking change log.

Question. Home menu layout is different for each user. I take it this extends to folders, yes?

So now that we've got folders out of the way can we sort out the data management problems. I just want to way to have all my saves always on the NAND and leave the external drive for updates and games rather than the everything related to a game has to stay in one place and if you want a backup save on the NAND you have to shuffle files around or something that it currently goes (I hear this is how it goes, getting external drive soon).

Disabled usage of characters not used when redeeming Nintendo eShop cards (O, I, Z, etc.)
You would think they could put an automatic substitution in for the ones that look like numbers. It already automatically changes case...(unless it is not like the 3DS, which is entirely possible*)

*-When you make a purchase Wii U checks thing like so: Free space, funds to buy. On the 3DS the order is funds to buy, free space.

I already have a new one, but since the Wii U uses a proprietary data system I can't transfer my stuff, can I?
Can't you connect both?I thought you could

You'd loathe the Wii (I did too tbh) aside from channels I don't recall a single thing ever changing

Cool, now I can put all of my Virtual Console games in one place.

It's a bit of a strange flaw that you can not only not access anything internet-related on your Wii U, but also on the 3DS AND the Miiverse web-page because of the new terms and conditions and error codes preventing you from actually agreeing to them.

Read the thread about the update. Turned my Wii U on, downloaded and installed the update. Managed my homescreen and finally could put everything in folders.

This update has killed my online connectivity. Can't agree to the new terms and conditions as it errors while trying to display them.

I agreed to them on Wii U, but thanks for saying the 3DS is the same issue as well. Going to make sure to agree right away since I want Smashy-Smashy at 11 CST.

Was really surprised they didn't have folders right from the beginning tbh, the 3DS had had folders for a while before the Wii U launched.

So, just switched on my Wii U and all the folders I'd arranged last night have gone... Sigh.....

yes

also theres four updated games that never leave the download place

Does this happen to anyone else?

Yes and that's normal. They leave once you start the updated games the first time.

Same goes to the "download/update completed" message on the gamepad btw

Had to update the TOS last night but it seems the update didn't download at all. Guess I'll have to force it when I get home tonight.

I didn't really have much of a need for any either, since I only had to scroll through two or so pages of stuff. I still think they are kinda neat because it let me throw a bunch of icons I don't use that often( mii maker, parental controls, health warnings etc) into one folder

Yeah i suppose, i have all those icons on the last page, i like to have all the game ones showing on the first screen.

Awesome update. I SHOULD be using folders, but I probably won't. They do look a ton better than 3DS folders though. At least they show up the label, unlike 3DS folders which only show one letter until you hover over them. I have like 5 pages of stuff, so I may end up using them.

Minor annoyance.

you can't press B to exit the folder.

I use the procontroller ... so it's a bit silly needing to jump to my joystick and move to the back arrow and clicking it.. but other then that folders so good

Wrong. You can connect a second HDD to the Wii U and transfer between them.

You must put both hdd on wiiu then you can transfer content from one to the other

Thank you very much, I'll get on it as soon as I leave work.

Fully agree that this NEEDS to be added.

That said, I still think that it would be a good feature - being able to back up save-games manually/seperatly should be a standard feature and not too hard to implement, considering you can already move savegames from disk based games.
