Wii U Virtual Console - News and Releases

If its 2-3 games a week thats ok in my opinion but you know its gonna be 1 at the most lol.

Wouldn't even be surprised to see no game weeks, especially to begin with.

Overs/unders on nothing else new till the 30c Super Metroid?

If I recall, they did 2-3 for the Wii at the most but then started to dial it back like a year into it... and they never went up to that pace again for some unknown reason.

It blows my mind that Nintendo doesn't seem to see VC as potentially a MASSIVE selling point. Yeah those casuals who played Wii Fit and Wii Sports might not be coming back, but something that could win back some of that audience, or at least people other than the diehard Nitnendo fans, is to play on the nostalgia of 20 and 30 somethings by blowing the doors off VC and releasing a shit-ton of NES/SNES/Genesis/N64 games. I'm talking iTunes level. And don't give me this "it's not easy" bullshit. Emulating 8 and 16 bit games IS easy, especially for a company as large as Nintendo. This should have been priority number 1 for Nintendo. It's a fucking cash cow.

SERIOUSLY.

If they implemented some kind of persistent account where I knew my games would work on future hardware, I'd buy every single Nintendo game ever made. How much would that be? A LOT of money for Nintendo, and it would be a huge incentive for me to continue to buy future Nintendo hardware.

As it is though, I'll just pick and choose the games on VC I never played back in the day. Super Metroid coming up, so $0.30 for Nintendo. And then maybe 10 or so more I guess... so they'll get about $40 from me.

Why is anyone even mad? Did you seriously expect Nintendo the release every game that was on the wii VC at the same time...?

Of course they're gonna dole out everything out one at a time... how else would they maximize profits on the VC.

Same thing is gonna happen on NextBox and Ps4 at launch...

I don't think you understand. If you waited 5 years on Super Mario World you would have paid $8 for the Wii U VC version rather than the Wii VC version. That doesn't change. But there's no reason to buy a Wii version now and that's where the backlog is. You'd get screwed for buying anything from there at this point because there's no telling when that game will get upgraded. This is why they should lower the price so that it doesn't matter if you buy it now in Wii form and just wait for the upgrade, you'll pay the same price once you upgrade.
Ah right. Yeah, at least knock off the $1 so you'll want to buy right now, then just upgrade whenever that comes along.

Oh my god. Fuck you Nintendo. It is so hard to support you when you won't let us. That guy talking about the PS1 titles knows what is up. Jesus Christ. Why won't they just let me buy their games. Why is it so hard. Don't you want my money Iwata?? Don't you want it?!

So we can't be mad because we should have expected it. Good stuff mate. What about the people who expected it at are still mad? Toxic thinking.

Completely different circumstances. Unlike Sony, Nintendo actually has BC, giving you access to your Wii VC titles. There's absolutely no excuse, from that standpoint, they shouldn't also have all those same (or at least close to 100) already set to be put on the Wii U eShop and in turn set to transfer to your Wii U with all the added bells and whistles.

Instead of actually preparing anything for the VC over the course of the 2 years and 6 months they stopped supporting the Wii, they chose to sit on their hands; deciding to only work on these 8 titles in the 6 months rather than work on a lot and have a ton ready for VC launch in the 2 years they actually had.

That's just it: they need to turn it into a gaming-themed museum of sorts, only with goods for sale. I think this is a great idea. Unfortunately, Nintendo won't be this awesome...

I'll never understand why companies choose to trickle out releases over making them all available. People will download the ones they want as quickly as they can. If they aren't for sale, then that's money not in Nintendo's hand that otherwise could be. Recommendations and quality search functions are really all that's needed.

Gaming museum is a great idea. Don't present like a shop, do it like a theme park. Too cool of an idea for Nintendo.

I wouldn't say I'm mad, but... I'm willing to buy shit and they won't let me. That shit's just dumb.

I don't even care about that list, no-way I would pay 1 to 1,5 bucks to "upgrade" my VC games anyway. I'm mad that there's isn't at least 1 new title.

Remember before the Wii launched back in 2005?

And everybody went nuts over the Virtual Console?

Nintendo was surely going to rule the digital roost. They knew what a great library of assets they had and they were going to use it. Not just NES, SNES and N64, but GENESIS! And TG16! Maybe even GBC and GBA titles eventually! Oh man!

No one minded repurchasing because these were digital! You'd have all the systems in one small awesome box of fun!

And then it launched. And suddenly everyone was forced to remember how terrible the launch year NES games were. Oh boy. DK Jr. Math and Urban Champion for $5. For that I could buy 5 99c iOS games that shit all over those.

And their N64 lineup? Wow. Really? 21? And only 2 3rd-party titles? After over half a decade, that's the best they could do?

Apparently, yes, yes it was. And today, this relaunch affirmed that.

If they're scared about people forgetting that crap, then make it a subscription streaming plan like Netflix.

The whole handling of this is just baffling to me.

You've got a console that is desperate for content. Any content at all. There's no excuse for not putting out 30-40 games minimum, followed up by 8-10 each week.

Do that, cut the prices by 50% (NES $3, SNES $5, N64 $8, GCN $15) and you've got a tonne of content available for

Heck, if I were them I'd offer a $50/year subscription service to access the entire library. Realistically, the average person won't spend $50 on the VC in a year. But I'd pay $50 a year to access Nintendo's entire NES/SNES/N64 library.

If the reason is they have to tailor each individual ROM/emulator for each game, then they need to change their approach. I know Nintendo are all about 100% accurate emulation, but the amount of people who care is so tiny. Just do system wide emulators and get 98% accuracy. Build the Wii U functions into the system wide emulators. If there are certain games that don't work, then go and do individual emulation.

Disagree with this. I want a reason to feel good about owning official old digital games. If they weren't as accurate I'd rather just use my cartridges.

They don't even need to do that. They can just have a rotating selection of titles, like PS+.

Yeah but you can see you're a tiny part of the market, right? In terms of someone that still actually has the old consoles (and the games you want to play), and could be bothered actually connecting and going to play it?

I'm just mad that Wii U hasn't had a single appealing piece of entertainment since launch day, and that includes this list. I had a feeling I should wait on Little Inferno, and lo and behold, I got it for $.99 on my iPad.

It's pretty toxic getting mad at video games because they don't suit your expectations all the time.

My expectations were that we would receive extremely slim pickings. That expectation was met. I'm not "mad at video games", because that doesn't even mean anything. I am mad that a company I have invested money into has shown no sign of change in 2013.

Thanks for your sarcasm though.

You had an iPhone in 2006? WITH apps?

I will buy none of those games, ever.

However, I will buy Super Metroid next month.

Maybe if they gave these games online play like SSFII Genesis got on the Wii VC, this list would be easier to swallow. At the very least, it would spark some interest or excitement about the future of the VC. At this point, I have none. I'm sure Nintendo will continue to do the bare minumum and trickle the games out. Does Nintendo just not like money anymore?

.....Not much to say other than sheer disappointment. I'm honestly contemplating selling this system if there is nothing at e3.

I feel like Nintendo is just killing it with the 3DS these days but I'm not quite sure what the deal is with the Wii U. This is pretty disappointing to me.

well if they released all of their first party games right now then there'd be no incentive for 3rd parties to even try

they can't beat all that

Either way I'm probably not going to be buying anything on the Virtual Console except for the 30 cent games. And Earthbound.

On the bright side we're finally getting Earthbound

To think I was actually having a bit of hope for the VC service this time. :/

So basically 2 years or so from now.

And you gained what by selling it between now and buying a new one then? I'm not a Wii U defender I just never understood the concept of buying a console then selling and rebuying it. Surely the amount you make on a used Wii U right now is probably only fractionally higher thant what you'll pay to get it back.

Meh, whatever. I'm not going to freak out over the fact that Nintendo is only releasing those games to launch the VC.

Could they do better, sure, but I've got more important things to worry about then old classic games.

I agree, sure, my Wii U isn't getting much use outside of NSMB and Assassin's Creed III, but I'm still going to keep it for the games I know I'll get in the future. Plus, it's the only console I have that can use Netflix and Hulu over Wifi since I let my Live Gold account expire (my PS3 is a 20GB, so no wifi).

The money from selling it being put to better use than sitting around and being a dust magnet? Not everyone pays full price for a system.

And, I have to say, Virtual Console implementation is incredibly cheap in itself. Has anyone had a look at Capcom Arcade Cabinet 'emulator'? Total customizable screen, scanline emulation, even a sound equalizer plus artworks, backgrounds and info. An incrdible package from which Nintendo should have a lot to learn.

I bought 3DS games, art books, and a pair of shoes with the money I got from selling my WiiU. All of which are more satisfying than staring at a white box until Christmas

I will upgrade SMW and maybe Excite Bike.

We need folders though. I'm already on the second page of games now (moved all the nonsense to the far right page)

I just hope that once communities for Ice Climbers, DK Jr., and Excitebike open up, they are bombarded with complaints about the terrible lineup. And if we only get 1 game next week, we see complaints about the lack of releases.

I want Nintendo to actually give a shit about the VC releases, on both systems. We don't need a special emulator for every damn game.
