Watching the raid video from back in the day. Guy said exactly what I wanted to hear lol. Do they really lend themselves more to actual in the moment gameplay and teamwork as much as they say? "No website walkthrough will prepare you" etc?
I'm not sure how they've changed, but they were pretty well like that before. Guides and stuff were obviously useful, but it's REALLY REALLY obvious who sucks at avoiding things in your raids. Sometimes highly coordinated but even when they're not it's like having 20 people playing mega man at the same time and nobody can fuck up y'know? or very few.
For example the third boss in the first zone (one of my favorite bosses) Phagetech Prototypes:
4 bosses, 2 active at a time and it rotates in a set order. Think Omnotron Defense System if you ever killed that boss in wow. Every boss has a main set of abilities as well as a 'big' ability they cast when they activate, and you'll go through the rotation 2.5 times before you hit berserk and they all come active.
First guy is heavy tank damage and has a cast that...heals? the robots. I might be mixing them up. he has something you need to interrupt periodically.
Second one that comes active summons repair bots that will travel to the other active member of the prototypes and heals them for a ton if it gets there. It also periodically puts a + shaped telegraph that shoots spikes up a second later under almost every raid member, it'll do 5-6 of these in a row then wait about 20 seconds to do it again. When it becomes active it sucks 5 people up into the sky and gives them each a colored ring underneath them, around the room there are 4 colored zones that match the rings, these people are phased from the rest of the group and cannot interact with anyone until all 4 of them reach their matching color, they also constantly drop void zones under themselves so you have to do it quickly or you'll die just running around.
The third guy fires mini-tohou style balls around the room and swaps the prototypes positions periodically, ala twin emperors in Ahn'Qiraj in wow. When he comes active a vortex summons 4 members and tethers them to a ball with a ring of electricty around them, they've got to kill the ball to escape the tethers and are usually stuck avoiding all the +s and the touhou balls while being barely able to move.
The fourth and final guy summons robots that fan out around the room and start to self destruct, if they finish their cast befoer you kill them they leave a giant poison puddle on the floor there for the rest of the fight. When he comes out he launches a volley of missiles that slowly land around the room and deal a ton of raid damage if they hit the floor, so at least one person needs to stand in each missile to prevent that.
Now, on paper, none of this sounds any more difficult than any number of most mmo bosse,s but in practice you'll find shitloads of your raid dead during progression, and it was one of the easier bosses.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkogI-idNME You won't see every mechanic since some are randomly on a small part of the raid, but that was one of our kills and you can see how hectic it gets.
