Will MS overtake Sony in North America now?

I brought the Wii U up not because of the forthcoming months, but because what is currently available. My post was in response to exclusives painting a bigger picture in the decisions people make when buying a console. Wii U is actually a good example when you consider it HAS the most exclusives games thus far, but has less of what? Established multiplatform titles that top the charts monthly. Even if we just consider the games like you suggest it actually WOULD be disingenuous to suggest that exclusives play the biggest role in deciding how these system will perform going forward.

I'm not sure I know what you're even saying at this point. Sounds like you're agreeing with me...but then saying you're not.

Guess we just move on then.

I own both of these flippin' devices, and the first one to get some bloody games on it will win my affections. The lack of games this far into the generation is just messed up. Xbox had TitanFall and PS4 had Second Son and Outlast. And the PC had two of those 3!

I really want to play my shiny new consoles, but damned if they aren't making it hard for me.

So, if Xbox kills it this year with exclusives, then sure, why the heck not.

Some of you need to find a better way to say that you have strict tastes and only care for AAA games, because to say these systems, especially PS4, "have no games," is ridiculous.

A lot of people (certainly not all) Will just see oh those games are on both + I get these only on xb1. Doesn't change the fact that ps4 titles will outperform the xb1 titles, just that it is by such a slight margin that casuals probably won't care. Casuals didn't even care with og xbox and ps2 and THAT was a difference most could differentiate easily...

Not saying xb1 is def going to outsell ps4, but it has a chance to sell quite well come holiday season...

That's the million dollar (for MS litarally ;)) question, isn't it?

I'll just say that $400 is not a casual/average consumer price point either. The people buying these consoles at these prices during the first year with little games available are gaming enthusiasts.

So you're saying marketing was the only reason why Windows Phone and Surface failed. Have you, as a consumer, actually played with these devices? I suggest rethinking your logic here.

What? I'm just saying MS marketing isn't good. That is all. Contrary to what some here are saying.

Nope, sorry. Try that again, this time without the silly "only care for AAA games" extrapolation. I cannot even begin to express how little I give a shit about console wars, but right now the consoles - which I all own and want to enjoy - have an absolutely anemic selection of titles.

I said this in a different thread but still think it.

Sony will decrease the price of PS4 at E3. This will make it even more appealing. Was thinking they may throw cam in there instead of price drop. But after Kinect, not sure they will do this...

They still win as anyone getting a PS4 (even if price is lowered) Sony wins from possible PSN subs.

[edit: spelling]

The key thing for MS is to be prepared with an amazing product (from multiplats, exclusives, services, competitive price) to make it a close to no brainer decision for current xbox 360 / (and maybe)ps3 users to jump there over the next months.

What exclusives? For the rest of 2014 XBO has Sunset Overdrive and Halo 2 HD announced which are both a joke from system selling point of view. Even if some more games will get announced to be released before the end of 2014 (Forza Horizon 2 being the only obvious candidate here) it doesn't look like XBO has anything close to good exclusives lineup for the end of this year.

PS4's exclusives aren't much better (although having played RAD games on PSP and PS3 I think that people are underestimating The Order) so it all boils down to multiplatforms this year. And PS4 will win these, it's clear as day.

Also - it is a big buying incentive to have a better version of multiplatform title. It is generally bigger than a good exclusive. Only exceptional exclusives like Halo 3, GeoW, GT5 and Uncharted/TLoU can be bigger than top of the line multiplatform titles.

Well right now there is only Sunset Overdrive, H2A is not even confirmed being in development. But imagine if some of the rumors are actually true. Quantum Break might be there and H5 is still not out of the question, At least officially we haven't heard anything official to the contrary

So imagine there being Halo 5 or H2A(Would of course not be as big as 5 but still respectable), Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, Forza Horizon. That would be a pretty nice lineup. Fable could also be their March Title... And then MS is going to blast COD being the supposed best version on XB1 in all of our faces due to the earlier map packs. So yeah, there's that possibility. Not saying this will happen but it's not totally off base.

When you consider, realistically, how many games are available for the consoles, and I mean specifically the PS4, the only thing that seems anemic is your taste.

You said, if marketing was good, those two products would be a success.

I'm telling you that no marketing in the world could have made those devices succeed more than they have.

I believe MS advertising, despite their products, is absolutely fantastic.

To put it another way, I don't think Nintendo games are as good as people say. I mean, if they were really that good, how come no one is buying the Wii U?

Then I guess we will have to agree to disagree on the marketing thing. I think that with better marketing their devices would at least be somewhat more successful. And it's really not debatable that PS4 marketing has been superior to Xbone marketing thus far, at least in my opinion.

As for the Nintendo comment, I believe their first party support has been lackluster, so along with poor marketing and high price for a Nintendo console, Wii U's situation doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

Well, yes, true, I should have said semi-casuals or semi-enthusiasts ;)

Ok, bud. You seem adamant to want to start some good ol' fashioned console wars stuff, but seriously. I do not care. Not even a bit. None. Zilch.

I can't see it happening. Obviously, the price parity was to get them on an equal footing for the onslaught of third party titles coming, but Sony has the mindshare.

They still have a lot more work to do. One of the problems now may be the friends factor. If someone has yet to jump in, and most of their friends have a PS4, theirs a good chance he'll get a PS4 still. MS is crawling back to win the mindshare they lost, and have done ok since their original debacle. However I still think Sony has the advantage here. Both need to blow us away at E3.

Fair enough. I personally don't think you give MS enough credit in this regard.

Sony has failed products too, I don't feel comfortable blanketly saying they have bad marketing.

My point is - and its the same with Wii U:

A bad product, is a bad product.

PS4 is doing great, an announcement means shit. BUT ... it is exactly what MS needed to do and exactly what NOBODY here thought they'd ever do.
CBOAT and other insiders said this would happen late last year. The chalkboard had Kinectless XBO on it since late last year. Almost every other person mentioned Kinectless XBO when they give points in how XBO can "catch up".

This announcement is like a car accident in slow motion you see coming from a mile away five minutes before it happens. Everyone knew it was gonna happen eventually.

Also in what world is the Xbox brand stronger than PS, let alone country?

The US of A. Xbox is a stronger brand here. 360 vs PS3 sales have shown that.

I'm assuming the current standing of the standalone console in Amazon's bestsellers list has been discussed multiple times already?

And in US of A PS2 crushed everything and PS1 won its gen. If we're talking each brand since its inception, PS definitely overwhelms Xbox, even in the U.S

And right now, it's certainly stronger since PS4 is outselling XBO here.

I agree with most others. It's possible but, it will be a hard battle and they cannot screw up. That price though it's gotta get lower and this is all assuming Sony doesn't drop $50 or add more value with a controller or Plus or a game at E3.

I believe with the right software, MS can make a comeback in the US.

Halo5 + Gears combo in a year will move systems. Plus the new price is gonna drive some too.

Things will get interesting, thats for sure.

But that would mean the PS4 would start selling less compared to the XBone, and that most likely won't happen, at least for a while.

Sony would be to fuck up tremendously and basically slaughter all their momentum. I still think that if the games are there, people will buy the consoles. With the PS4 I think people are more interested in the potential future line-up as a result of what happened last generation. People are arguing over the PS4 and XBone while the PS3 is still getting a healthy amount of games years after its release, and after the 360 and Wii have been seemingly abandoned.

Everyone keeps saying it will be all about the games. That's fine and dandy, but lets be honest here, more systems will be bought for Destiny, and CoD than any exclusive by a very wide margin. All of the biggest games are multiplatform now, and those are what will drive the console sales. Most people aren't going to care what exclusives are on the systems, they are going to care where their friends are playing the big multiplayer games. Unfortunately for MS, Destiny is the first big multiplatform multiplayer game. Destiny is going to be marketed like nothing we have ever seen before this year, as Activision is banking on it becoming their next big thing, and the marketing is going to be pushing the PS4 version.

If PS4 can distance it self like MGS:GZ, Tombraider again and again.. then most people will stick with PS4.

It all depends on how fast MS can close the gap. If it becomes 792p is the max it can do.. then it will be a lost cause.

Heck I saw a Destiny PS4 commercial during the NFL Draft. Talking about getting ready to SHARE your adventures with your friends.

Marketing is already starting for PS4 Destiny. It could be huge.

Lets see the results in the US of A when Sony entered the gaming business:

PS1 > Everything
PS2 >^99 Xbox
360 > PS3
and so far PS4 > Xbone

Stronger brand indeed. lol

Unless Microsoft partners up with more established multiplatforms, I don't see it happening, ceteris paribus. Look at Watch Dogs and Destiny with the huge marketing budget and production values to it, aligning themselves with PS4.

Don't forget. Assassins creed, batman, gtav port, mgs5 and far cry 3. They have many 3rd parties siding with them.

Is this your first rodeo partner? Both the Xbone & the PS4 have a shit ton of awesome games available to play considering that they've only been available for six months. Show me any previous generation that has had as many great games available this early on.

Who ever signed the marketing deal for Destiny and watchdog need a raise.
These two game just secure May, July (Beta on PS4 first) and September.
With TLOU remaster set for June, Diablo 3 for August, big game every month plus whatever mid/small size indi title in between.

IIRC, the previous gen had the same issue, and I recall the 360 not really doing much until later in 2006. Ghost Recon, Fight Night, Gears, those were the first games I remember really getting the mainstream excited about the new console gen.

Yeah its almost odd seeing 2 major third party releases this year with major PS4 push behind it. And could be 2 of the biggest third party releases of the year, for new IP anyway.

One coming from Bungie of all developers. Them walking out on stage with Sony was an awesome moment.

Good call with the summer launches. There are releases each month that could get people on board. No real breaks in between and then BAM, 6 big games in one holiday month. Everything seems well structured this year.
