Will Soul Calibur 6 be announced on Comic Con tomorrow?

DOA5, especially it's definitive version DOA5 Last Round on PS4/Xbone is a great fighting game! You are missing out big time (if you avoid it due to prejudices?).

DOA is a legitimately good fighting game series, though. Last Round is a lot of fun, and DOA Ultimate is one of the best games on the original Xbox. It's a shame that its presentation convinces people not to take it seriously when it actually does a great job of taking Virtua Fighter's core mechanics and speeding them up with a more newbie-friendly combo system and a heavy focus on countering.

Meh. I used to love DOA when it first started out (DOA 1 and 2) but it's just lost its way so drastically since then. I liked the gameplay when it was quick parries and fast-paced backward and forward not really what it is now. And it's just become too t 'n' a for me. If devs want to focus their game so strongly on a particular market segment they can't really be surprised when other groups start to feel alienated.

Anyways, all that aside I still downloaded core fighters when I first got my PS4. It didn't look great being a last gen game. I hated what they did with the mid kick holds (why?). New characters were pretty bad. And most of all it just didn't feel great to play like VF and Tekken feel good to play. It feels like it's lacking in what would make it stand shoulder-to-shoulder with those series in terms of gameplay.

But that's all irrelevant though since I want a new current gen fighting game not a re-heat from last gen. If DOA released a new, up-to-date game I would certainly look at it seriously.

While it's a very, VERY different game, I think the thing giving me the most soul caibur vibes at the moment is oddly Pokken. Some of the character's moves echo very much from the stage of history for me (e.g. Braixen has xianghua/Leixia's 'Vengeful Lian Hua' for example and a upward vertical slash that's textbook soul calibur in general)
Again, it's still a very different game due to not being able to sidestep in duel phase, a greater emphasis on ranged attacks, especially in field phase and a lack of downed options (aka no rising attacks, rolling about on the floor or the option to stay down as long as you like) but of all the fighting games at present it's the one that keeps giving me weird moments of 'soul calibur-ness' in terms of evasion, distancing and motion... well, aside from the existing Soul Calibur games, of course :P

Just because an announcement wasn't made at one particular event doesn't mean that the series is dead. They're not going to have two fighting games competing against each other on the market for the people who wanted to hear a SC6 announcement at Comic Con.

I still remember when the series was dead after SC4. Naturally the Facebook stuff is going to be disappointing, and things aren't perfect now, but I still remember when there wasn't an official page to bitch about and when they made no acknowledgements whatsoever towards the series.

Look at how dead Virtua Fighter is. Look at how people still don't take DOA seriously as fighting game. The only thing people are taking seriously now is 1080p pole dancing videos. Plus there's 3 new consoles coming out in the next year, TxSF announced 6 years ago and still off in the distance somewhere, and work on Smash 4, Pokken, and T7 console and PC, which are going to impact their plans.

If nothing happens after T7 had its time in the sun, that's when I'll be upset.

But isn't Soul Calibur's official Facebook page acting weird and kind of desperate for attention lately?

A week ago they started this blitz of character info, series trivia, quizzes and this imaginary tournament:

Peoples' response seems to be just lukewarm to ice cold. Most are persistently asking for a new Soul Calibur. XD

That's nice but I would just like to see something in the 3D fighter scene. Even Namco's sh*ttest Soul Calibur game is better than nothing.

I would actually say a crap game is worse than nothing, especially when it's a niche subgenre like this.

Odd you think a turd of a game being released will help things. People get alienated from genres when they play bad games in them. Having a high profile disaster of a game is going to poison the well especially when there's not many other options.

Do you guys know what would be awesome? The "Legendary Souls Showdown" of the last two combattants being a teaser trailer of Soul Calibur 6 on Gamescom.

They've made quite a fuss about this tournament that they are letting fans vote for on Facebook for some weeks now. They even disappointingly promoted just their Facebook action on the Comic Con panel.

The reveal of the last finalist will align with the start of Gamescom next week. The "Legendary Souls Showdown" mentioned underneath the final battle would happen in the week of Gamescom.
If a Gamescom reveal would prove to be true, they could repeat these tournaments where fans can practically vote for the characters that will be revealed in SC6 next. They did say they are planning more of these tournaments but didn't say what they are for and what they lead to. Having a tournament that runs for over month not leading to anything good would kinda suck. They know that too, right?
But having a fan involving action as described above would be something new that would surely generate some excitement and attention. But that would be just too awesome, right? SC6 is very likely a no-show on Gamescom as well... :(

It's probably a no-go, but they really have been hyping up this Facebook thing. They can't be doing it for no reason, right?

We might see or hear something at TGS but even that might be pushing it. Development for Tekken 7 isn't exactly done yet either. I think it's safe to say we'll get something next year.

They also just renamed their twitter account from @hoshino_calibur to @soulcalibur. To what end, I kinda don't care at this point.

Honestly it just makes it seem like they were so out of touch, they didn't even know what their Twitter account was called until after Comic Con. Woudln't surprise me if that was the case. The Facebook page has completely ignored any competitive SC news like tournament promotions etc in favor of reposting Lost Swords pinups and mindlessly casual focused stuff like character polls that go absolutely nowhere. (Sharp contrast from their French equivalent that actively promotes tournament players and stuff like that.)

Can't wait for more vague BS that amounts to nothing with a random Namco rep popping up to say "The soul still burns! Oh, and expect absolutely nothing." Whoo.

This video kinda sums it all up.

Haven't Bamco been doing a teaser on their website for some game? I haven't checked it since it doesn't work on mobile but is there a chance it's this?

Official Soul Calibur pages of Facebook and Twitter also just changed their head banners:

That stage in the background, which they also used for the tournament graphic, is it a new design? I tried to match it with older stages but none really fit. The closest would be this gothic/art nouveau mix SC5 stage:

Other than that there are some other more conventional gothic style stages like...

SC2:

SC3:

SC4:

But none is really similar.

Like, why would you do this OP? I had forgotten all about this and now you reopen the wound. Cruel.

Aww...I'm sorry. :( I don't meant to reopen old wounds.
But I do think there is definitely some suspicious stuff going on right now... I might be paranoid but in another forum people don't think this is all just coincidences. I just wanted to share my findings/musings here too with a bit broader audience.

That sudden facebook activity is suspicious...

I'll take anything, but the dream announcement would be a SoulBlade remake. I want them to keep the character design simple like in the first installments of the series. And to get rid of the character creation stuff. It ruined the online for me in 4 and 5, with 90% of the opponents having some bad taste or trolling characters.

I'm excited for a new Soul Calibur just to see who the guest character is. They better not pull a SC3 and not put a guest character in.

I used to post that competitive stuff when the FB page first started with SCV until it died down. The vague bs shows that somebody is still interested.

You have to start drumming up interest for when you're ready to actually announce a new product. You can't have two dead social media accounts when you're trying to celebrate the franchise's 20th anniversary, or having people tweet to the wrong damn account which happened after this panel, so somebody's trying to fix that.

TGS reveal, believe.

As much as I'd love for this to happen? I'm already using all my prayers, virgin sacrifices, sending my energy to Goku and etc. for DMC5 to happen at TGS, as it is.

I mean, unless they want to make good on the old plans from the SC3 era and put Dante in SC6 on the same token to celebrate DMC5...

Are the DMC5 rumors that strong? I really hope so; DMC5 would be announcement of the year.

If you want more indepth details, feel free to hop over and join us in the DMC4SE topic on community!

But long story short...there's been plenty of teases (and a Capcom IR listing or two) made in the last year and some change, such that it makes DMC5 seem like a matter of "when", instead of "if".

Are the DMC5 rumors that strong? I really hope so; DMC5 would be announcement of the year.

Not really. Mostly just some things that suggest it's happening:

- DMC4SE had strong sales and significantly boosted their financials the quarter of its release. Link

- Besides that, DMC HD Collection has sold 1m. Keep in mind they greenlit RE2make based on RE HD selling 1m. Not that it necessarily mean anything. http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/finance/million.html

- Capcom listed DMC in their pipeline for 2016-2018 titles along with their other four big franchises. Link

- Capcom has already announced or released completely new titles for every other major franchise (RE, SF, MH, Dead Rising) and every other active franchises like Ace Attorney and Sengoku Basara. DMC is the only one left.

- They have no major titles lined up for late 2017 or 2018.

- Itsuno tweeted in January that he's already developing a new title, which we" should look forward to" (roughly translated). Itsuno very rarely tweets, so it's not insignificant. Link

- Development of DMC4SE was partially outsourced to Access Games. Link None of the usual planners were involved, suggesting they're busy on something else. Itsuno oversaw DmC while directing Dragon's Dogma, so he could have easily been doing early production work on a new DMC.

- Numerous teases and "there are rumors" comments by Reuben Langdon and the other actors over the past 12 months, suggesting they have heard something, though they deny having been contacted by Capcom to work on a sequel.

- They're suddenly developing a Resident Evil 2 Remake of all things, which is far more crazy than another DMC game. It's a stretch, I know, but I don't feel it's irrelevant either.

I don't believe we'll see anything announced at TGS. Capcom has been announcing games with shorter windows before release for its big titles, SFV being a notable exception because of the online betas. DMC also needs to make a big splash, so I believe E3 next year is the earliest we'll see anything.

That depends. Inerested in making a fighting game, or interested in spinning out the characters into unrelated FTP trash?

The article is talking about this image, right?

Well, it's part of Soul Calibur's recent promo offensive on Facebook and now also on Twitter when they just recently transformed Hoshino's account into the official Soul Calibur Twitter account.
On it's own the image isn't saying much, lol...but in the bigger picture the whole promo offensive, fan engagement and hints that something will be coming for months are clearly an indication that they are up to something. Probably within this year, the 20th anniversary of the series.
Many are hoping there will be either a SC6 announcent on Gamescom or later on TGS...

Yeah I didn't want to make a thread about it since it isn't saying much. Might be possible confirmation of a new SC game though.

Guys, why do this to yourselves.

Because there have been strong hints and indications for months that something is coming within this year.

And before anyone says, but something something Tekken 7. Tekken and Soul Calibur always existed beside each other. New games for both series were released in the same year at times. Tekken 7 is announced for more than two years already and is out for arcades more than one year already. On E3 and EVO this year it also stood alone in the limelight. It had more than enough time to shine. Now can be be Soul Calibur's turn.
