Anyone have any luck setting up tiles to folders in desktop version of explorer? I got it to work with two by setting the program to C:\Windows\explorer.exe, setting the parameter to the directory, and modifying some tiles images myself, but I can't get any more of them to work.

They just show up as a blank tiles. They still work, but the image isn't showing up. The image is a 300x300 png that I made in Paint. I made the other two and they worked fine, so I'm not sure what's going on.

edit: Maybe it was a file size thing. Small 300s seem to work from past experience. I guess mine were to large at ~220kb

You should be able to just put in the drive path without linking to explorer.

With all these online application tiles I have to ask, what are you linking them to? Just http:// or are you giving an argument to your browser?
Yes just put in the http address.

Got my free copy of Win8 Pro today so I made some tiles for the games I play. Will do programs soon. As you can see I like keeping to the theme of Win8

Looks really good! If you're doing requests, can I request XCOM, NFS, AC3, Hotline Miami or FIFA?

They look good but i think the gradient starts darker on the left and goes lighter on the right.
Really? I thought they were random.. damn it I really need my glasses asap. Going to keep them the same most of them start on the correct side anyway

Also I noticed each APP icon has a little frame around it.

As for those game I will post them up soon

These are Phenomenal! I think I'm gonna change all my icons to be thematic like this...

I'm not hating Win8 on my laptop...so tempted to put it on my main PC now.

Maybe in a month or two...
I have it on my main rig, it's great. Go for it!

Probably of use to nobody, but here's Dropbox.

Sorry if this has been posted already/is well known, but a really useful program for generating "metro"-style icons for more generic things (like folders, libraries and a few programs like web browsers and MS Office) is Syncfusion Metro Studio 2. It's basically a load of svg icons packaged into a nice UI that lets you edit several together, changing size, colour and padding, before exporting as .png images. Most importantly, it's free to download (they say it's worth $499, but I don't see how they could ever sell it as it contains a load of copyrighted logos!) View the video at the link to get a good idea of what it does. It's probably not of much interest to the more graphically talented users who are posting tiles, but for the artistically illiterate like me, who are just browsing this thread for icons to use, it's extremely handy.

I found that setting the size of the icons to 150x150, then using the default padding gave good results.

Also, the new version of Oblytile is really good. Anyone still using an older version than v0.8.6 should definitely upgrade (from the same link in the OP). Being able to edit tiles and easily convert pinned shortcuts to tiles is very useful!

I wish a new version would come out that automatically deletes an old version of the tile you edited on the manager.

Seeing a shit ton of folders for previous versions of tiles is annoying, and it really builds up as you continuously edit.

Does anyone know where I can download the default Windows 8 tiles? I'm talking about the Music, Photos, Videos, Games, etc. tiles that are installed by default.

If not available to download, where in Windows 8 it's stored?

I've made some tiles for the image editing programs that I use, hopefully they're of use to someone:

GIMP

Inkscape

Paint

Forgive me if this has already been answered, but how do you locate some programs in the Obly thing? When I go to manage most of my programs show up but not all (Office, Calc, some other random ones don't).

I have tried manually pointing at them / finding them via explored and pasting the address but I just seem to end up with error messages.

The manager just shows you the custom tiles you've already made. Just click the button next to the path field and find the .exe from there.

http://www.ghacks.net/2012/11/25/pin-steam-adds-your-steam-games-to-windows-8s-start-screen/

Pin Steam is a commercial application for Windows 8 that adds the option to pin any Steam game to the start screen of the operating system. The application offers two features that may make it interesting to Steam users who work with the Windows 8 operating system.

•The pinning itself is faster and easier using Pin Steam
•You can customize the small and large tile for each game, and tiles usually look really good

A click on the application icon on the start screen opens a connect screen where you need to enter the Steam ID of your user account. All Steam games are then listed on a page without having to enter a password due to the fact that this is public information.

You can start games right from here with a left-click, or pin games to the start screen by right-clicking on the tiles instead. This opens the tile creation page where you can select a small tile from a list of available images. The wide logo is automatically selected by the application.

You are automatically taken back to the configuration page once you have made the selection here. Please note that the app makes no distinction between games that are installed and games that are not installed on the system. If you start a game that is not installed, you will get the installation dialog first in the Steam client.

Note that uninstalling the program will also remove all shortcuts from the start screen automatically.

I do not think I would pay the $1.49 for the app considering that I have already added my games to the start screen manually, and that I can launch any game from the desktop as well. Still, if you are using the start screen and Steam heavily, you may like what the application has to offer.

Ooh, I just got an idea. Can we use modified opacity settings (baked into the .png itself) for our tiles? Let's take this logo for example.

Pretend the navy blue is just the background color and not part of the image itself.

The assassin crest would remain white.

But, the "III" would be white with opacity set to 50%, meaning it would be a darker version of the background color or something like that.

Can anyone see if this is possible? I don't have Windows 8 yet myself.

I bought pin steam.. The upside is that I can launch games like mirror's edge that did not work for me with the olbytile shortcut.. the downside is that the app itself crashes sometimes and the game fails to launch.

Overall it's really easy and most of my games are on steam, so for the lazy person with a lot of steam games, it's worth a try.

How can I link my Office 2007 programs on OblyTile? I tried the default shortcuts, but I get an error when it tries to launch it.

Does anyone know where I can download the default Windows 8 tiles? I'm talking about the Music, Photos, Videos, Games, etc. tiles that are installed by default.

If not available to download, where in Windows 8 it's stored?
Just wanted to bump this, as well.
