Windows PCs will have an AI photographic memory feature called “Recall,” which will take constant screenshots of everything you do

True visionaries, really. Satya needs a statue. That guy and Philly steers MS away from the Mariana trench. Just what we need. The only problem is, they are hooked on the teat mead of AI and it will get worse over time :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy:. Whenever the AI tells them: get on all fours, and act like a cat for one day, they gonna do it.

Why tf would a computer save my actions in the form of actual pics? Big Data only needs code/texts and at most pic descriptions to know what I do and look at. Or is that actually meant? Privacy nightmare and doubtfully even possible when Tiktok being banned for less obvious motives.

This is serious privacy violation, and also burden pc more in low spec or low internet bandwitdh, ugh... :/
I think the thread title is overselling it, this isn't for all Windows PCs, just the new "Copilot+ PCs". They have to have a special chip on the device (branded as NPU) that handles all these machine learning operations locally. MS claim none of it is going back to the cloud, but I wouldn't trust them. Then again I wouldn't trust MS wouldn't be sending any of my computer usage data back to the cloud in some way, so I don't use any Windows machine.

... how does this even make it past the concept stage?

"I propose that we constantly record every detail about what a person does on their PC, and then store the details in an easily searchable way to ensure that everything - from banking, pornography, chat messages, emails - is saved forever and anyone with access to the device can recall it!"
"... you're fired".

Shit like this makes me really excited for the next Xbox just to see what insanity they think they can peddle. I suspect the Xbone isn't the floor anymore.

If only there is alternative for me

Hmm, what if I have an encrypted drive on my PC storing work related stuff that needs to be encrypted (eg. GDPR), if I decrypt that drive and open files from it would it then screenshot that private file and so it is then stored unencrypted/elsewhere? Even if stored locally, this is then outside the realm of the encrypted drive is it not?

Isn't this suppos3d to be work only locally? Also they say it is an optional thing, and again, it is more for less the same thing that already happens...

Nice question... I think their point of view is that being it only used locally it doesn't affect any privacy concern... on the other end as someone that is studying for "red team" I totally can't wait to see which porn stuff you guys have :D

Once Windows 10 reaches its EOL cycle, it'll be finally time to migrate to a Linux distro. Valve's Proton is already doing wonders when it comes to game compatibility.
If I only could settle down on what distribution to use...
Currently running Mint (Ubuntu & LMDE6) Debian 12, Zorin OS, Bazzite in VM's to try them out...

I use Mint. There were a few others in the past I briefly tested off a USB stick but decided it was too much work. Mint was the first one I tried and it was close enough to Windows XP/7 in a superficial sense so that's good enough for me.

Short story, I picked one and rolled with it.

If I decide to give up on playing games on PC, then I'm leaning to either Mint (LMDE) or Debian, IF I want to play as many games as possible, that's when I'm not sure, I want it to be "install and forget" type OS for that.

Oh they will, not because of the privacy issues as the EU is a control freakery institution that doesn't really care about privacy but they hate big American technology sector companies and this will be too good an opportunity to miss going after one, again.

..and this is Microsoft waving a big sign at the EU saying 'come and have a go if you think you're hard enough'

If this sort of information is going to be collected, only a European controlled company should do it!

are in a big trouble
Yes it is stupid but it's only going to happen on co-pilot AI systems those are the OEM systems you would buy in a store.

In my opinion Microsoft really needs to work on making Windows more fluid. When I do a fresh Windows install I have to run a program to remove all the bs bloatware and other bs this have.

As awesome as modern AI is and everything, I don't fucking need it in everything. I want my operating system to operate, not be some bloated resource hogging piece of shit. If I want to use an AI i'll open an app for it. Feels like the early fucking 90s again when everybody was trying to dotcom everything in the early internet years. Some of it will stick and some of it wont but I really have no need to be constantly surveilled.

Well it says it's all local so Internet bandwidth wouldn't be an issue. Nor necessarily even privacy if everything works as intended but it sure seems like a privacy vulnerability and the implications on wasted storage seem significant too.
