With all the hype for season 2 I thought I'd try going back to this after dropping it last year, some sensible chuckles but nothing much else for me. I'll give it one more episode since the party is all assembled by the end of the episode.

It's pretty funny to see this discussion of Maid Dragon with MetroidPrimeRib, dimb and others reference every other series / genre label but not directly say Oh My Goddess!. I mean c'mon guys! Is it just so obvious that you don't have to bring it up?

Oh My Goddess was different though in tone and comedic approach. It's not as gag heavy for starters as Maidragon.

I'm not old enough to reference that.

I don't think having a girl being the magical girlfriend of a girl somehow makes the concept novel either unless there is some sort of commentary on being gay either. As it is the gender of the main character is not really relevant. In the end the show is pandering to men so who is that stuff really for?

But I think that having a main character being a) female and b) a working adult, makes it different than other similar shows, which mostly feature schoolboys from my understanding. I mean, sure, I don't think the gender will play such a big role either outside of some jokes, but it creates a more interesting dynamic and it's almost like it tries to parody the "genre". It remains to be seen if they'll develop that, as I can see that the first episode didn't really do much with it and, in addition, the MC is a cliche otaku.
And if the animation does a good job with the attention to detail how much does that matter if the jokes do not see the same careful curation? We get a skit that ends with the maid dragon stripping, then we get some skit about how the clothes are actually her scales, and then somehow she changes into an outfit that was bought for her. Drop the thinking meme here.........

I thought this was a reference to how lizards shed their skin and scales.

Yeah, it's not a great fit for what the first episode of Dragon Maid was. Though I suppose if you're just breaking it down to the "magical girl comes to live with you." it works.

I only watched the first two episodes, and I remember liking the gag where they work as normal laborers (fast montage included), having forgot the whole thing about being adventurers. That's it. Maybe it's funnier in ep 3, I dropped it at that point.

Konosuba S2-1
The animation does look worse. I could care less though as the every frame could be off-model and I would love the show just the same, if not more. This was a great S2 opener in that while it both serves as a somewhat clever recap of the events in S1, it also gives a motive and setup for S2.
That interrogation scene was hilarious due to how broken Kazuma was
. The opening theme is pretty fun, the midair sequence was great.
I appreciate all the reaction faces this show gives.

What is going on with AnimeGAF today? I can't believe what I am reading!

I won't disagree on tone, but everything else is a match.

- Ordinary-ish main character (although because this is 2017 I guess they're now a maid otaku)

- A supernatural main character who becomes entangled in the life of our protagonist

- A supernatural main character who has to deal with living in the "real world"

- A focus on the relationship (?) between these two characters

- Magical hyjinx

- An expanding cast of magical characters - if we're going the Oh My Goddess route this will include a little girl (already covered) and a sultry older women.

It's kind of a well-worn formula. It's certainly tweaked here because the show is a different genre (comedy vs romance) but the individual elements are as old as, well, Oh My Goddess!

Ah, at least I'm not the only one that noticed something was off because I started to think that I just remembered S1 wrongly. And I completely agree with the rest. In that regard, both of the Deen shows managed to have good recaps that weren't boring expositions and used the show's strong points to their advantage. Pretty impressive.

That could describe so many shows nowadays, Monster Musume for starters. Hell, I think Tenchi Muyo would sorta fit into that description.

The execution though is almost completely different.

Edit: Wait wouldn't Urusei Yatsura fit into that definition too?

The OP was funnier than the actual episode.

And the actual episode was pretty damn funny.

Are those game-like transitions and titles new? I don't remember anything like them is S1. They look pretty slick either way. Shame the animation looks so rough but that's the nature of the show I guess.

In anime/manga you can usually trace the roots of the genre all the way back to that one work which really 'defined' the genre - and it's often surprising to see how little has changed over the decades.

They had the game pause thing in the first episode in S1 for commercial breaks but stopped after that. Hopefully they maintain that all the way through the season now as I absolutely love it as it gives a JRPG feeling to the show.

This season I have a very nice spread:

Tuesday - ACCA

Wednesday - Konosuba S2

Thursday - Kuzu no Honkai

Friday - Blue Exorcist S2
- Rakugo S2
- Seiren

Saturday - Sangatsu

Sunday - IBO2

Basically something to watch every day except on Monday. Friday is stacked aha.

No. Ah My Goddess! and Maid Dragon (So far?) appear to take place in 'the real world' but some supernatural elements creep into the setting. The main characters are living basically normal lives, but the 'alien girlfriend' element brings in some unusual flavouring. Both works, to some degree, have played on the concept of this magical creature trying to understand/deal with mundane reality.

Tenchi Muyo (which everyone should watch the original OVA's of - really) doesn't feature a grounded world at all. There's battles, action, space ships, aliens, robots, the main character has super powers and his school gets blown up pretty early on. There's an actual plot that develops over the course of the OVA's as well.

The world of Urusei Yatsura is strictly insane. A truly anything goes wonderland of madness featuring elements of every genre imaginable. It has no grounding. We don't have to worry if Lum will 'fit in' to 'reality' because the first episode is about aliens invading the Earth. There is no 'real world' to contrast with.

It looks good, but I'm not feeling it. Probably going to stick with Demi-chan for my monster girl fix this season.

KonoSuba S2 01

Still enjoyable, but maybe they embraced the S1 artstyle a little too hard, crossed the line from stylistically sucking to being just bad on more than a few occasions.

So I finished watching the Broadcast Dubs of Keijo and Joker Game last night.

Joker Game was pretty bad. Like, I dug the premise but that was a boring ass series.

Keijo, outside of it's concept, was a pretty generic Sports Anime. Main thing it had going for it was how ridiculous the Keijo battles were and how the characters took them so damn seriously.

I feel like there is probably something from before Ah My Goddess! that fits this pattern.

I mean, possibly - I don't really know as much about manga as I do about anime. Still, there's some very specific about the idea of a Magical Girlfriend moving in to live with you - it's a fairly particular niche as opposed to something more woolly like 'mecha show'.

Yeah, that was definitely underwhelming. It's not like I ever got bored or that it had unwatchable (because, let's face it, not even the worst KyoAni can be that bad) moments but it certainly wasn't anything special. All the gags were something we have watched a million times with mostly competent delivering but that's about it. It's still too early for the slice of life parts to kick in but the characters didn't show any ridiculous potential.

I will keep watching it but I am definitely lowering my expectations of what's to come.

Dangan Ronpa 3 12 and Dangan Ronpa 3: Side Hope

I...really don't know what to think of the ending honestly.
It's rather rushed for a start. Could have had an extra episode or 2 to iron things out. The DR2 characters come back unceremoniously and it feels half assed. Not to mention that there's no explanation for how the comatose characters came back. Munakata ending up with nothing is karmic in a way but he got completely screwed over given that Mitarai ended up with a happy ending.

I think the thing that irked me the most was
Kyoko being alive, or rather how half-hearted it was handled and felt. While her being alive does give Kizakura's sacrifice meaning, It's foreshadowed in the same scene rather than earlier in the series (seriously a shot of Seiko's medicine would have been enough), it comes way too late and worst of all it doesn't showing what happens when Makoto sees she's okay. I can guess what happens but I want to have the feels, godammit.

I think the ending sums up my thoughts on the series, a disappointment. It's a disappointing end to a series I really liked. Despair straight up sucked, Future had it's moments but otherwise suffered from some serious narrative faults
(not to mention AE and even DR2 to some extent has been made pointless in the grand scheme of things)
. Both sides have characters left underdeveloped and the characters that are developed and likeable get killed. I don't hate Dangan Ronpa 3, not completely anyways, but this is easily the biggest disappointment I've seen in a long time.

And now I wait for Dangan Ronpa V3 to come out over here in the hope that it's a return to form.

How is this ground in the real world when you have a dragon flying in plain sight or a flashback where she's literally fighting with god? One gag has her literally blowing up the apartment when trying to clean it.

Oh My Goddess is much more focused on keeping a realistic atmosphere with just tinges of the supernatural. How much of Kobayashi's workplace did we see this episode? Even a minute? The focus is primarily on the supernatural hijinks. The dragon doesn't even bother hiding her identity and shows it off to Kobayashi's co-worker while in OMG, it was tried to be kept on the down-low.

Dragon Maid Episode 1

Nope.

Dropped.

OneRoom Episode 1

You know POV porn, where the male actor holds a camera, never talks, and just fucks? One Room is like that without the fucking aspect, but you still have to look at your reflection in monitor when the screen goes black at the end.

Aikatsu! 6:
I'm really enjoying this. The show is a lot more charming than I thought it would be, and all three of the main characters have developed a nice relationship together. It's good to see Ran warming up more with Ichigo and Aoi, and I want to see that relationship continue. The episodes are having a lot of really nice expressions, and it's just fun to see the characters working towards their dreams. I've already gotten myself wrapped up in their stories. This is just an example of a sweet little kids show that puts a smile on my face, and has some nice lessons along the way.

I'm not old enough to reference that.

Time to get my AARP card.

Way too many references to itself. This show was pretty good in the past at avoiding stuff like this but it is a pretty big error to make on a first episode after a year long break. Wish there was a stronger sense of progression for the story so it could take its comedy to new places more easily, but reset season starts like this never feel very promising.

I appreciate the fact that it's different but I'd be lying if I said that I don't miss Part 3. A lot. Lots of episodes have been really underwhelming. I miss the old crew, Polnareff most of all.

Kobayashi's Maid Dragon 1

Underwhelming. The jokes and characters are serviceable for a first episode, but nothing outstanding. The maid otakus acted like maid otakus. Tohru did a bunch of crazy dragon stuff, but the execution felt flat as they weren't funny or awe-inspiring. It works, but this feels like it should be going full crazy. Nice references at least.

Great point, and we're getting to one of the things I didn't like about this episode.

Now, I can why you'd argue that my position regarding the world of Maid Dragon is untenable. Tohru, in dragon form, certainly does do a bunch of pretty over the top stuff in public. However, the world continues to function exactly as normal. Kobayashi herself explicitly states that she considers Dragons to be purely fictional. The burglars who see the Dragon certainly seems surprised to see her. So from all this, I feel pretty confident in stating that this is a world where most humans live without seeing fantastical creatures - in other words, reality. But then how come we clearly see Tohru flying around brazenly, or standing fully formed outside Kobayashi's apartment? Its clearly just for the gag, but I strongly dislike how loosely defined the world of the show is.

I feel that for a comedy like this to work (for me at least) I would like the world to be a bit more defined. I would rather the gag world be

- a ) A crazy setting where anything goes a la Gintama or Urusei Yatsura because then we could just have loads of dragons flying around, blowing stuff up and no one would comment

or

- b) A more grounded setting, where the presence of a gigantic dragon would actually warrant some commentary form the general public

Instead it feels like the show exists in some fuzzy nowhere space between those two ideas.

While we didn't spend all day at Kobayashi's work, the focus of the show did remain on her living a normal life, doing normal things. Going to work, working, drinking after work, having her clothes washed, eating dinner etc with the added twist being the Maid Dragon making the situation 'wacky'.

So, as I was saying before, much of the humour/focus was derived from seeing the normal situation altered in some way by the presence of the magic stuff. I won't argue that the mix is more towards the wacky here, than in, say Oh My Goddess! but I'm just saying its the same template. Heck, Belldandy uses her magic power to fix / clean stuff in the same way as Tohru, and there's also stuff with Heaven / Hell / Demons and other wacky shit (apparently Belldangy fights Morgan le Fey at some point, lol).
