[WIRED] Exclusive with Mark Cerny, PS5 specs detailed

LOL
3D Audio?
15 s x 0.8 s?
Zen2 instead of Zen1?
8k support?

3D audio nobody cares about.
15s x 0.8 it's called a SSD.
Zen 2 instead of zen 1 obviously it was going to be the newest architecture of zen. nothing new.
8k support, obviously it gets support for the future on this front. Doesn't mean anything.

Anything else?

I don't get the "Sony already won e3" comments given Microsoft could give us some actual numbers around things like the GPU and memory....like they did with Project Scorpio at E3 2016.

Don't read into those comments too much, ppl are just happy Sony finally gave some info and it's good info (I am one of them). Who wins E3s in the end doesn't mean shit and even if Microsoft reacts to this and gives some solid info you'll still have ppl anxiously waiting for the next Playstation as you will have those waiting for next Xbox.

Your edgy and cool. I want to be a big pessimist too? Can I? Love your trolling method 😂😂😂

While I do see that as a more cost effective solution, my only issue with this is that SSD drives only have so many read/write IOPS so once we start hitting those limits (which you will because the drive will be so active) and it ends up shitting the bed then what do we do? I think it will end up being a removable drive just because of this.
Samsung Evo 970 1TB has a 600TB write endurance, which equals 160GB per day over a 10 year period. I think the concerns about SSD write endurance are greatly exaggerated.

Does anyone imagine we'll see a better media carrier by then too? Improved blu-rays or whatever else I mean. I'm tired of everything taking a million years for installs and updates and all that shit. It's actually why I switched to, well, the Switch so much because of how fast everything works. But it feels like things are stuck in limbo with regards to that for a long time now.

Who put you in charge?

You seem wierdly oversenstive to someone expressing gentle reservations.
Its a thread to talk about the specs of PS5, not to talk about the 'problems' of PS4/Xbox/NS. Nobody put me on charge, but I can see bad faith in those kind of posts.
I nothing waiting for Nintendo/Xbox to reveal specs of their proper new machines to whining about the old versions on another thread. Just to keep that in mind.

I care about audio, I love real working 3D audio, listen to it, its a game changer.
No loading times have been mentioned now by several people, yes please.

You may not care but a lot of people do, thanks for your contribution.

This is such a fucking Sony way of doing this. Microsoft has had the press frothing at the mouth for months about next xbox, streaming, gamepass, backwards compatibility, Arrogant Sony... And then Sony sends out Cerny, on a random as fuck Tuesday in April, to have a casual fireside chat with Wired where he spills all the PS5 beans.

Never change Sony, never change.

Its me or this is the same dynamics that we had in 2013? I remember very well how every media outlet back then was talking non stop about how "the cloud" would "change the way we play"

It seems to me like "we bough 5 new indie studios" is the new cloud
Meanwhile Sony keeps doing their stuff, releasing a affordable and balanced console and having a lot of good studios making good games which is aparently what people want.

The article is way too lengthy, might want to do some breakdowns since people don't bother reading most of the times.

  • Zen 2 CPU
  • Navi GPU
  • Ray-tracing
  • 3D audio chip (possibly Audiokenetic/WWise that they bought earlier in the year)
  • VR support, current HMD works with it (potentially no break out box a la RuthenicCookie leak)
  • PSVR2 might be in the works but not talking about it at the moment
  • Specialized SSD build-in to save loading time, bandwidth higher than PC SSD's, tested on Spider-Man (PS4)
  • Dev-kit in the hands of developers
  • System build with developers input a la PS4
  • Supports 8K graphics
  • Supports physical media
  • Backwards compatible with PS4 library
  • Death Stranding most likely being developed for PS5 as well
  • Some kind/form of cloud integration (more news to come in this regard)

Looks fantastic to me, it seems evident that we will have a PS5 teaser in the E3 days, hopefully a full blown disclosure.

Either he is purposely running interference because hes a good corporate shill or devs dont trust him enough to give him any reliable information.

It will be the latter.

Why would anyone, with any clout, share information with him? He's not really a journalist. He's an activitist, pretending to be a pulitzer prize winner. His sources are always anonymous because they're likely the canteen staff.

Geeeez Capt Negative! I do care about 3D audio, just know that they have committed to any kind of SSD is a great thing, it is official now instead of just speculation, which is the same thing for the Zen 2, that was kind of up in the air as well. Nice to see 8K support (not that I personally have any plans to use that). No need to be so cranky...do you need a Snicker's bar?

Have to think a much faster cpu and SSD storage should help with install times...

Meh, going to wait for the Xbox One X follow up, really don't like the UI of Sony in their Playstation consoles. They rarely update the way it looks, and one of the console experience in my eyes must be a good UI, which Microsoft is always strong on.

I think many can agree. The xbox interface is a sloppy mess. This is something Microsoft can't seem to get right.

They had it right with the original "blade" UI for 360. It was perfect after the first update where they drastically sped up the animations. Every update since then has made the UI worse.

The only clown thats edgy is you.

Its confirmation of which was never really spoken about by Sony, not really sure what the purpose of your posts are. They are official unveiling some of the technology, its probably not in its final state yet so its not an official unveil of the final specs and physical box.

I don't really have much knowledge about specs, is this good? Expected or perhaps better than expected?

Nice to finally have some official information about the next generation.

Very True.

Good if you like specs, probably not good if you like your wallet thickness where it is. (I would say good to very good, but we don't now everything yet)

Yeap. The initial leaks was about Zen, than the question was if is Zen1 and Zen2. Zen2 have some good improvement compared to Zen1.
Zen1 is a high jump vs Jaguar, so Zen2 is a even more higher jump.
Navi is expected, but little was talking about the gpu. For 8k NAVI really need to be a very custom made hardware. Dunno if will be archieve by upscaler or checkerboard, but still a future proof.
3D audio NAVI can do too. So some leaks are really talking the true. AMD and Sony are really that close to make a custom PS5 hardware.

In the end, all we need to know is a 'confirmation'.

Bear in mind what was demonstrated was an in-game load, so again I'd hedge on the side of it being some sort of SSD caching method.

As I've pointed out before, if a game is built to REQUIRE that sort of vastly accelerated throughput, then anywhere the code is stored must comply with that capability. Given that even this gen the expectation is that external drive storage is necessary for some users, unless they are also going to REQUIRE equivalently specced external HD's (i.e. no cheap and common USB3 devices), then it has to be some sort of pipe-line arrangement.

Now if you factor in situations where that rate of throughput is surplus to requirements (downloading/streaming) and situations where backwards compatibility may only be achievable by setting performance caps, then the cost vs benefit of having massive amounts of storage in SSD (or RAM even) balance shifts further.

Zero. Still bottlenecked by bluray read speed sadly... And the bigger games of next gen mean even longer install times unless they get a much faster drive.

Unfortunately this is very true, unless they throw in a much faster blu-ray drive or if you have a gigabit internet connection the install times are going to be just as bad. What would be nice is if you had the install disc while it is installing the game from the physical media it would also concurrently download all the updates and patches at the same time, now that would save some time!

Or you just get slower loading times and more pop in/aggressive LOD if you're not using the faster spec.

Current PSVR will be compatible with PS5 and will improve PS4 psvr games.

HUGE news.

So much for those of you that said Sony would ditch VR for PS5.

The importance of all consoles having SSD's cannot be understanded. When every single SKU has one, the games can be designed around that technology and it won't be just for load times.

Load times are dead! And way cooler open worlds. It is a game changer. Too bad PCs will hold back 3rd parties.

Yes and no, imo, everything is a cost vs performance balance.

Do you want a fast boat or do you want a luxury boat with 4 rooms, chances are you're not getting both... especially at normal consumer pricing levels.

This gen should be about going big or go home as we approach the end of Moore's Law, so even if its more expensive... this gen is going to be around for a very long time. (I kind of agree with you)

How about a boat where you have to wait 30s before entering a room?

Ok, well. It's a broad church etc.

By the way, you used the term 'bad faith'. That sets off my ResetEra alarm.

Point of order. Bad faith means you are misrepresenting your position. The closest internet equivalent would be concern trolling, where you are feigning one position to try and undermine another. It's not simply stating a contradictory opinion. So, for the sake of argument, if the chap is simply saying 'I think Sony are shit', that's not bad faith. That's just a contradictory opinion.

They use the term 'bad faith' as a banning reason all the time on ResetEra and IT MAKES NO SENSE.

UI is one of the biggest criticism MS received this gen.

It was trash for most of the generation and today it works but could be way better.

They need to do a complete overhaul of the UI for the next generation.

My gut feeling is PS5 will have a bunch of new features, and with todays tech. you better have 8GB+ Ram, Backwards comparability etc..

Sony consoles never have average parts. DVD elevated the brand two generations ago, Blu-Ray elevated the brand when it arrived last gen, and meeting gamers demands is always SONY's commitment.

So much for those of you that said Sony would ditch VR for PS5.

They were hoping it did as Sony was innovative in including it on consoles and it is a big differentiator amongst the consoles. It shows their forward thinking just like when they went with streaming before all this other streaming talk.

Jez people are even bring 'resetera' to the thread. I don't know what to say. Gonna just keep talking about the PS5 specs.

I maybe missed some specs, but is GDDR6 after all?

Doesn't the Ps4 already do that? I remember the ps3 did, but I only used 1 or 2 physical games at the beginning of the gen with ps4 and don't remember.

Seriously Xbox cluttered, slow ass ui was not its strong suit and Sony schooled them on tht. Even with tons of updates on Xbox ui, Sony's is still better and faster.

It's generally pretty good. Latest AMD hardware (at least as of mid-2019) with raytraced graphics, a fast SSD, backwards compatibility, 3D audio... Sony seems to at least acknowledge that the PS5 needs to represent a major boost in performance to convince people to replace their PS4s.

Install times on the PS4 are pretty damn fast, I don't know how they do their compression but it sucks off that disk much faster than the Xbox which is atrociously slow in comparison.

interesting....I recall last gen being "too long" with ps3/360 going from 2005/2006 all the way to 2013 when the curren gen consoles launched. The fact it'staling 7 years again for this is pretty crazy.

You really should stop. Even a PC cannot load this fast in RE2 and DMC5.

Seriously and I wouldn't be surprised if big companies feed off of big rumors on these websites and what players want and fit it in and make it a reality when thy can. Forums like these are great because thy catch the companies and devs ears.

"Sony undercuts Microsoft"

HYPERBOLE CLICK ME!!!!!

This announce has me instantly excited for E3. Two stumbles for me though are going after 8K support and physical media. It seems as if physical media could become a limiting factor in scope and scale of games very soon. Although, I guess you could ship on 2 blu-rays...

8k is a ridiculous thing to tout right now...how about we get 4k 60 or actual good AI, destruction and physics before we jump on the 8k bandwagon.

It will probably be a UHD BD drive so 100gb discs are supported. 8K support obviously is more geared toward video media but maybe we will see smaller, simpler games support it, who knows. I guess they will have 8K checkerboarding option too.
