Wired play through all of Too Human

@previewers, does the game feel like a UE3 one?

It's ironic, considering that one of my favorite "sanity effect" tricks that (ahem) Eternal Darkness pulls on you is when the game suddenly stops after a few hours and you see a message that reads something like "Thank you for playing! Continue your adventure in Eternal Darkness 2, coming soon." Five years later, Too Human does the same thing -- except seriously.

that is pretty damning considering how pissed off I was when I thought the ED2 coming soon screen was real.

I'm sure Kohler meant to say that the game comes out on Aug. 19.

I just posted my preview on the MTV blog, based on 3 hours of play: http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/06/30/too-human-preview/

"Like “Metal Gear” the story is not spoon-fed."

wut? MGS4 has the most spoon-fed story ever even though I like it.

Yeah me neither, so is 10 hours good or bad. How fast was the previewer? I guess play time is pretty relative for such games?

RPGs, especially loot-fests are supposed to be really long.

Too Human is not an RPG either, unless you think Diablo is an RPG.

Diablo is an RPG

http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/diablo/index.html

Not sure which one I clicked on, but it was the one where he fights a big mechanical thing.

I was tenative on the game before, but that just removed any doubt. No. Thanks.

Game doesn't even show the boss emerging - some debris gets tossed in from off-screen, then the robot jumps out. And there's no feedback at all when he's attacked - he stands there soaking it up, no movement whatsoever, even for the big special attack. It just looked....dumb. The animation in general has appeared quite poor, but that entire battle was simply terrible. It didn't look like he was fighting a boss, it looked like he was fighting a big monolith that soaks up damage.

this is how the game has always looked. nothing's changed in the new batch of vids.

I'm pretty sure I'll "try it" the question was will i "buy it"

based on this preview alone, I would asy no, but of course ill wait to hear more before making my final decision.

What question? I'm definitely buying it. "FOR". Is that what you meant?

Kohler rips through games as fast as humanly possible. He's even admitted it on Retronauts before.

Anyway, I'm a console leaning loot whore. There's no way I don't buy this game.

Cliffhanger endings are nonsense.

As we've seen with games like Mass Effect it is possible to get a concrete ending in an episode of a serialized game.

I may seem hard on this game, but that's only because I'm a total loot whore. Diablo is one of my favorites, and I do want to enjoy this. Still, I have several fundamental issues I will need to sort out out for myself.

Those videos don't look too hot.

My thoughts exactly........unfortunately.

I really am trying hard to like this game but why am I doing that? I'm not supposed to do that, SK?

For the past 30 mins or so I've been going over a lot of the Too Human previews and the videos posted above, and really, it still is very underwhelming.

I mean check out this post I made over a year ago at Toohuman.net:

just made it even worse for myself by reading that article...I can't wait for Too Human.

It really bothers me how those who are skeptical of the game don't take into account the game as a whole. I'm sure the rough animation will be fixed but none of that really troubled me. Too Human's presentation is just too kick ass that it reminds me of games that are considered classics but aren't exactly remembered for their gameplay but for how well their different aspects were put together.

However, I'm not saying TH won't have great gameplay; on the contrary, I believe the gameplay will be awesome from what I read and heard form the previews, especially with all the RPG elements, classes and customizations implemented.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to upcoming previews and the mentioned cutscene, and congratulations on the site update.

The same worries I had for the game, I still see...Gameplay still stiff as ever, the whole engine debacle really fucked up the presentation, imo...It doesn't look as good as it did before. The User Interface looks utterly aweful, as well.

I'm still looking forward to it but really man, SK, this is a FAR CRY from what you've promised.

In Dyack's post that I quited during that time he even denied that it would miss 07.

It's just incredible. The team isn't small (120 people right?), rumors say the budget isn't small, the game was delayed for a long period of time, it has like 4 years of dev time, and they can't even come out with something that at least looks polished?

I don't understand. There's a word for that, incompetence.

The animation still looks incredibly stiff. The enemies don't react to the hits (like Ghaleon said, the big guys just stand there and take it) and the attacks themselves look really weak. The weakest moment in the vids is when Baldur juggles the enemy and does air combos, animation there is simply atrocious.

When reading about the game and looking at the feature set, one would get totally excited for this game, but then you see it in motion... christ.

Can the camera be zoomed in?
It's hard to see what's going on... on a SD set this might be a serious problem.

Why are you so sure it's down to ms and not their own mistakes.?

I would like to think a Dev wont just give up on their product and rush it out ...and then post on GAF in the hopes of getting some publicity.

I know Baldur's animation is bad, but I was marveling at the boss itself. I hadn't seen any footage of boss fights, so it surprised me. It was...incomplete.

Well thats probably not in dyacks book but the phrase ''blame everyone else'' certainly is.

I was really looking forward to this. I actually thought it may be a diablo replacer for the 360. But, ughhh, those videos and 10 hour length? I'll pick it up after it's cheap and the sequel is closer to release.

To be honest the major issue with SK is they can't animate action in scenes or gameplay for shit. It doesn't matter how huge the teams are, whoever's directing the action obviously can't do their job and for some reason hasn't been fired. The one hope I'll have is a lot of that staff were dedicated to modelling equipment and altering the combat instances based on characters stats to make it worthwhile to play until you're 50...

I was thinking the same, but given it stops dead in mid-air I'm hoping whenever it freezes it's due to a weapon property.

I'm guessing Dyack will either blame the media for not "getting it" or Epic for forcing him to steal their engine.

remember people, this is one of the top games coming out this year! better than ED! Stand and be counted!

wow ppl buy games that just sound OK now?

standards seem to be lowered this gen.

Standards are not lowered. Only the 360 owners have lowered their standards because nothing else good is going to come out for them Except Fallout 3 (multiplatform) and Gears of War 2.

10 hours is pretty bad. By the end of the review he made it seem like its going to get reviews between 4.0-8.9 depending on how much dopamine they get injected while they play the game.

All I'm going to say is, that I called this game out for what its going to be months ago. Mediocre.

Diablo 3 in it's current early stage looks more polished than this.

I was thinking of bringing the comparison, but didn't because i thought maybe it was unfair because Blizzard is probably the best dev house in the world but...with less development time, still far away from release, Diablo 3 looked 10x more polished than this.

There's just something wrong with that.

Graphics, animations, look of the battle, just looks crap. It's clear that whoever is in charge of those things at SK is shit at the job, i'm sorry, but you should be working in some lower budget games, this is inexcusable.

I got those videos to work, the environments look nice but the combat isn't reassuring.

Maybe they should have shown different classes or different levels, because all I see is a guy knocking enemies in the air and then hacking them, and then doing the flame bird attack. The boss fight doesn't look dynamic at all, and the 'boarding animation' during the Beast Slayer video is incredibly poor. I can't work out half of what the UI is showing either.

I would also like to think a dev wasn't that completely deluded about their product, I keep hoping.

On the first video, the top right says "camera: iso" - looks like the player locked it to this view out of preference

All this from one preview. Wow.

Even after Dennis tried being a pompous self-important muppet here, people are still against him.

What more can he do?

he should just not be allowed to promote his own games, and for god sakes get of the boards. His posts make him look even more arrogant. The E3 06 thing was retarded.

I've definitely been on the fence about this game since it was first talked about (on the PS1 I think?), and I suppose I still am... but ten hours? Really?

I expected something a lot more epic on a project in the works for that long. Still going to try it, almost entirely due to the hype and backlash at this point.

Lack of polish in the gamevideos: yes
Lack of story length: probably
Jumping on the robots head for the umpteenth time: repetitive

Still buying the game: yes

Why, you ask? Because on consoles Earth Defense Force is the closest thing I've seen to a proper fun loot game in years. And that sucks.

Got the preview build today, but since MS is getting retarded since a few months with the media restrictictions, I'm not going to do any videos.

Looks really slow, especially the mid-air combat. That cutscene of the tanks blowing up the door didnt look too good either, completely stopped the gameplay, drew the player out of the moment for a pretty stupid slow cutscene.

Can't see the vids, but is the camera worthy of being patented? Cause Dyack was pimping the camera a lot...so was EGM.

Are you restricted from showing later levels or anything like that?

Seems to be stuck on the Isometric option on those vids, which looks practical but doesn't seem dynamic at all.

This will still be the top seller the week it comes out even if it garbage. X360 owners proved that when Turok came out. It's probably a good rental though given it's length.

I don't think so. There was a point where a large enemy became transparent so as to no obscure the main character.

What's that jumping on the head thing going on there? Cinematic kills? In this type of game? Odd. I didn't know that. Sadly, I'm not watching every video with that obnoxious Hail to the Chimp ad playing every time.

I really do not like how Kohler harps on the time it took him to complete games in his previews, but outside of that, this was a pretty good.
