With the tetralogy complete, which is the best Uncharted game? SERIES SPOILERS

enigmatic_alex44

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
Recently replayed the original trilogy through the PS4 remasters and just finished Uncharted 4. I used to think 3 might be my fave (at the time) but the replay made it clear that Uncharted 2 was the best game from the PS3 entries imo.

WARNING: series spoilers below for all 4 games

Uncharted 1

Pros:
- Obviously the most dated but still a fun game that did a great job introducing the 3 core characters: Nathan Drake, Elena and Sully
- Fun, lighthearted story without any excess or loose ends
- The environments are extremely samey. I know it all takes place on one island but man, it was not visually interesting.

Cons:
- Encounter design becomes really repetitive with obnoxious bullet sponge enemies. It's obvious when you're walking into yet another firefight with all these rectangular waist high spots to hide for cover.
- Really poor villains when compared to the other 3 games. Eddy Raja was okay but Navarro and the old guy were... boring
- I do like the supernatural aspects of the series, but the whole curse/plague thing was a bit lame.

Uncharted 2

Pros:
- Perfect pacing. This game may have the best pacing of any of the 4 games. Always switches things up before you have a chance to get bored.
- Stunning art direction that still holds up to this day. I think it's the best looking of the original 3 games.
- Great encounter design for the most part. None of the encounters feel that repetitive and it doesn't feel like just wave after wave of enemies like U1 and U3.
- Introduced my favorite female character in the series: Chloe <3
- Tenzin was an awesome character too.
- Train sequence is still probably the most memorable set piece in the series. The building collapsing while you're in it, escorting and injured Jeff, having a tank chase you through town, U2 has some of the series highest highs.
- Shambala is still my favorite "lost city" of the series. Visually stunning and the guardians make it feel otherworldly, plus the Tree of Life looked amazing.
- Has the most environmental diversity. Sad it's the only game with snowy areas.

Cons:
- Flynn. Annoying rat faced character. Super obvious he was going to betray you.
- Final boss fight was extremely obnoxious and frustrating, in a cheap way. I think it's the part of the game I dread replaying the most.

Uncharted 3

Pros:
- The teenage Drake sections were cool, and loved seeing how he met Sully.
- Marlowe was a good villain (however Talbot sucks).
- Chloe
hzcbx6k.gif

- Desert areas were gorgeous and new to the series.
- Enjoyed new character Cutter.
- Amazing set-pieces, the best of which was the horse caravan chase

Cons:
- Controls don't feel as tight as U2
- The pacing is a mess. The entire middle of the game (where you think you're going after Sully in that wretched, overly long shipyard) could have been reworked
- Talbot. Replace him with a cardboard cutout and I don't think I would have noticed? Ugh
- The "Sully died" fake out. I like the idea but it came off as really clumsy. If he "died" closer to the beginning of the game or even the middle, the reveal that he's okay might have had more impact.
- The plot with the hallucinogenic was a bit of a flop. I wasn't expecting an actual genie, but maybe something more interesting than what we ended up with? Marlowe's plan to "control through fear" using the drug was... dumb.

Uncharted 4

Pros:
- Visually stunning. It's the first game I've played the has actually felt "next-gen" imo.
- Story was told really well. Naughty Dog learned a lot from making The Last of Us. Uncharted 4 had a much more mature tone.
- Rafe and Nadine were great villains, my favorite of the series actually. I'm happy that bad ass Nadine got away actually <3
- Encounter design was well done, just like Uncharted 2. No bullet sponge enemies was a relief.
- The "Rope" and sliding were new mechanics that they pulled off really well.
- The flashbacks with young Nathan and Sam were done really well.
- Madagascar was incredible, and the truck controls beautifully.
- The huge environments and numerous ways to navigate made treasure hunting the most fun it's been in the whole series.
- Best ending of the series. The other games' endings were too abrupt, and I feared Uncharted 4 would just "end" as well, but then the Epilogue with Cassie happened. Just incredible. Really gave a sense of closure and finality to Nathan Drake's story. I was a bit emotional finishing it actually.
JZbssG3.gif

Cons:
- Not one singular original "set piece" to really rival the train sequence from 2, or the plane or sinking ship sequences from 3 (The chase that starts with Nate hanging from a crane was incredible but not something "new" except for the fact you were actually driving the truck at one point).
- Sam was not nearly as likeable as I had hoped for. It's also odd he's so unattractive, meanwhile Nathan is a supermodel.
- Final boss was a bit wonky. Throwing a new mechanic at you (sword fight) in the final encounter isn't great design imo.
- Pacing was great for the most part, but a few chapters felt a little bit longer than they needed to be (this ended up being the longest Uncharted for me at 4 hours longer than Uncharted 2).

Before the epilogue happened in 4, I would have ranked the games as:

U2 > U4 > U3 > U1

With the epilogue, I'd rank them:

U4 > U2 > U3 > U1.

So I guess I'd say Uncharted 4 is my favorite. Maybe that'll change in another play through and Uncharted 2 may rise to the top again.

What is your favorite game in the series? 1, 2, 3 or 4? Or maybe it's Golden Abyss? (LMAO. Seriously, I played it but I can barely remember anything that happened in that one. Is it even canon?)

2 > 4 >>> 3 > 1

UC4 is a beautiful game with a shockingly decent story but it's not nearly as ground breaking (pun not intended) as 2 was.

3 had way too much shooting and I'm glad they toned it down considerably in 4 and focused on platforming.

1 was fine for its time but doesn't really hold up as well as the rest

Sam is unattractive? Could have fooled me, I'd say he's pretty good looking for a guy his age. Shame about the hair line but it comes with the territory.

Anyway, Uncharted 2 is the best with 4 bringing up a VERY close second. Followed by 3 and 1.

I don't know what it is about Drake's Fortune anymore, but I still just fucking love it so much. A Thief's End was really close though to be honest. A lot of the game felt like Drake's Fortune (which is a very good thing for me).

EDIT: That epilogue, though. Probably the best part out of the whole series. It all built up to that moment, and it felt fucking great.

Uncharted 4 is the best.

Best combat.
Best visuals.
Best pacing.
Best performances.
Best new characters/villains.
Best story.
Best locations.
Best final *boss*
Best ending.

Did you play Drake's Fortue recently? IMO it doesn't hold up like 2 and 3. Any way for me it's:

U4>U2>U3=U1

IMO this was genius. Drake is not a skilled fencer or swordsman, so making the player learn to fight with swords right as Nate is learning was super immersive. It forced you to think on your feet and heightened the feelings of danger and distress as it's made clear that Rafe is a veteran fencer.

At the moment Uncharted 4 is my favorite in the series, but this may change, if I look back at it in a couple of month.

I thought he looked good too! But he does look a lot more "weathered" than Nate.

I'm fairly certain the stark difference between Nate's and Sam's appearance was intentional, due to the fact that a) Sam is older, b) he's a chronic smoker, and c) he's had a harder life than Nate due to being in prison for 15 years.

U2 >= U4 > U3 > U1 > GA
There's a lot of things U4 does better than 2, but Among Thieves has that perfect pacing and its the sequel that literally improved on everything and more. It also came at a time where the PS3 need it a killer title.
I can't believe I have 8 Uncharted platinums, I'm going to miss this franchise :(

TLoU >
4 > 2 > 3 = 1

I would say UC4 and UC2 are close, but the combat and very human moments in the former put it ahead.

4 = 2 >>3 (Never played 1)

It's a big tossup between 2 and 4 really. Right now I'd say 4 but that's probably just for being fresh. They both had great moments, the train and car chase segments being the real highlights in my mind for each of them. I played through 2 at least 2.5 times, and I imagine I'll do the same for 4 eventually.

4 is the best. The combat is finally up to the same (very high) level as everything else, if not better. It's one of the most impressive games I've played in quite some time.

4 > 2 > 3 >>> 1

4 > 3 > 2 > GA > 1

Ignoring Golden Abyss which disrupts the trajectory, it truly was a franchise that got better with each iteration.

4 > 2 > 3 = 1

Such an incredible series. 4 took everything Naughty Dog had learned from their previous games and became one of the greatest games of all time.

Drake's Fortune, hands down.

1> GA> 2> 3> 4

Shame really cause Drake's Fortune was such a good game, ND just didn't know what to do with it. If the series continues i'd love to see it continue in Bend's hands. They almost made a better Uncharted game than ND managed

Looking at them right now, I think it's 4 no contest. 4 >> 2 > 3 > 1.

"For its time", 2 gets a boost for being so groundbreaking, and inversely 3 drops down a peg for stagnation. 4 = 2 > 1 > 3.

Uncharted 2 remains king for me, mostly because I felt like Uncharted 4's pacing was a bit wonky. I still like Uncharted 4 quite a bit though.

For me I guess it goes 2 > 4 > 3 > Golden Abyss >>>>> 1 (Really not a big fan of 1's pacing and combat lol)

I've warmed up to UC3 more lately, I really enjoyed it during my last playthrough. Still unsure where 4 stands in the canon but the second will always be my favourite.

This is purely based on how many times I beat each game.

U3>>u2>>u4>>u1

Nostalgia I think actually puts 2 above 3.

I rented and beat u4. Then my gf bought it for me without me knowing. It's been at least a week and I haven't made it past the little drake section in the beginning. Really. .no real urge to go back right.

Great game, but the toned down nature of 4 just isn't what I wanted. Unfortunate because the few set pieces that are there are splendid.

Shame on you for not including Golden Abyss. Anyway, my list is:

1. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
2. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
3. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
4. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
5. Uncharted: Golden Abyss

Drake's Fortune got me back into gaming after skipping the PS2/Xbox/GameCube gen and it blew me away with what games could achieve. I still think it's one of the best-looking games ever made, even today. In terms of gameplay, the feeling of being stranded on an island and exploring its every nook and cranny really adds to the game in ways that 2, 3, and 4 can't match. Golden Abyss offers that same feeling, which is why I love it too.

The improvements to movement, aiming, and gunplay, as well as the addition of GOAT 1.04 multiplayer make Uncharted 2 the better overall game, but at gunpoint I'll always pick Drake's Fortune. It's just a personal preference at this point and probably nostalgia plays a factor too. And while I love 4 and its MP, the soundtrack was such a letdown that I have to put it below Among Thieves.

The separation between 1 and 5 is about 10 points. For example, I would rate Drake's Fortune a 100, and Golden Abyss a 90. This is the best series in gaming history.

I prefer the locations in 1. I like that it all takes place on one island over the course of a few days, rather than travelling all over the world for ages like the rest of the games do. Also appreciated the lack of big explodey set pieces which i'm not a massive fan of. The characters were, in my opinion, best portrayed in DF. The story didn't take itself too seriously like the rest of the games do, and it was good fun.

I must admit though i did like 3 more when i played it in TNDC. I hated it on PS3 but it was much more fun on PS4. Still lousy though.

Uncharted 4 is just dull as fuck. I honestly can't drag myself through it very quickly. The gameplay is boring, The story is boring. Too much darting around the world. Sam is annoying as fuck. Really don't like Nadine and Rafe as villains. Just the whole thing is just.. nah

Come on people, Golden Abyss wasn't that bad. It was kind of charming, passable gameplay, and really impressive for a handheld.

My rankings:
2>4>3>GA>1.

Granted, I'm only 3/4 through 4.

I'm kind of disappointed with the rope actually, it feels kind of gimmicky most of the time, though on a rare occasion it feels exhilarating. At least it reduces the amount of "Mash x to climb" segments. I like the rope a lot more for combat than I do for exploring.

Uncharted 2 is a really well designed experience.
Uncharted 4 is also, but it indulges in 'I'm really doing nothing' downtime too frequently.
Uncharted 3 is solid, but doesn't come together as well as the above.
Golden Abyss is a neat and fairly comprehensive experience.
Uncharted 1 straddles the line between good and just ok.

Yeah, the fact UC1 was all contained within one island was great in a way, plus Eddy Raja. I didn't enjoy Goden Abyss at all though. I think we can retrospectively appreciate UC3 more now UC4 is out.

1 -- reminded me how fun games could be again

2 -- nailed it.

3 -- extremely good [don't get the hate] but a bit 'more of the same'

4 -- matured the plot, perfected the gameplay

Honestly, I love them all. I can't really rank them. All of them hit the mark for me, even 3.

I guess, if forced, then 4. It perfected the gameplay, the added paths [especially when climbing] really made the game feel larger while maintaining pace.

Would need to replay them all to be sure, but for me 4>2>1>3.

Oddly I briefly considered placing 1 ahead of 2 given that I always found it the more replayable of the two, but the overall quality and step up in basically every aspect of the sequel gave it an undeniable edge.

3 is the "curate's egg" of the series, it has some terrific high-spots but is overall a bit lumpy and I found it very much a once and done sort of experience. I do feel I might be undervaluing it some though.

4 is easily the best in the series in my view.

Depends on how you look at it. Among Thieves and A Thief's End were definitely the biggest 'leaps' in the franchise. 2 set a new standard for action-adventure games while 4 brought in a lot from The Last of Us in the way of storytelling and calmer moments. 3 mostly just took what 2 did and did it bigger and better, but it did suffer a bit from having the set-pieces come before the story. Drake's Fortune hasn't aged all that well but will always be fondly remembered. Golden Abyss has to deal with the unfortunate fact of not being developed by Naughty Dog and being on a much weaker system. Some personal rankings;

Overall: 2 = 4 > 3 > 1 > GA
Most interesting mystery: 4 > 1 > 2 > 3 > GA
Best set-pieces: 2 = 3 = 4 > 1 > GA

Overall, Uncharted 4 is the best game in the series for me. Story telling and gameplay were the best in the series, especially the latter.
