Without checking, how would you pronounce these Irish names

The only reason this is difficult is because the way Irish is transcribed is as awkward as fuck. If you wrote a 'v' instead of a 'bh', and so on, nobody would have these problems. The names themselves aren't inherently hard to pronounce.
Yeah, agreed. It's not my pronunciation that's wrong--it's the spelling of the names that's the problem.

Since a couple people didn't know Aoife in my last thread, I figured I'd make a new thread since I'm genuinely curious. No cheating dudes

Aoife - Wife
Caoimhe - Came
Orlaith - Orally
Padraig - Peja
Eoghan - Etregan
Sorcha - Sokka
Niamh - Nim
Saoirse - Scorcese
Feidhelm - Fandral
Tadhg - Taj

Irish gaf is naturally excluded (sorry guys!)

Tá geansai orm.
Is maith liom cáca milis.
Bhí mé ag dul go dtí an siopa.
Tá scamaill sa spéir.
Bhfuil tú ag iascaireacht amárach?
Is féidir liom dul go dtí an leithreas?
Is é sin go léir cuimhin liom.

Thanks primary school.

Chuaigh mé go dti on siopa inné agus cheannaigh mé milseáin agus buidéal líomanáid.

Ní maith liom obair bhaile.

I'm more than 50% ethnically Irish, but didn't get any of them right. I don't know Gaelic or really much on Irish names though.

They look like the names that come up when you hit 'random' in the WoW character creator.

Aoife - aay-ife
Caoimhe - kay-o-im
Orlaith - or-lay-th
Padraig - pad-rayg
Eoghan - e-o-ghan
Sorcha - sor-cha
Niamh - knee-am
Saoirse - sao-irs
Feidhelm - feed-helm
Tadhg - fuck no clue lol

I got them all wrong too.
English isn't my first language, so I can't really write down how I pronounced it.
Except for Aoife, which I pronounced as 'Ahoyfe'.

It's really complicated. If I ever visit Ireland and ask for directions, people are going to laugh at me for pronouncing everything wrong.

If these names were translated into English and are this far off phonetically from their correct pronunciations, my first thought is that they should be corrected. Pronouncing these names isnt hard because they're gaelic, its hard because the person who translated them to English was drunk.

I spent some time as the accounting manager for our Irish subsidiary, and we had a few employees with the names in the OP (and Grainne, which I saw mentioned further down the first page). Another weird one to me is a guy named Micheal, which is pronounced (ME-hall).

Living in Canada I was hoping to give my kid an Irish name if I ever have one, but seeing how they're going down in this thread, I think I'll spare my kid a lifetime of correcting people

lol

I stayed on a farm in Ireland for a while. The family's names are Aisling, Aron, and Cullain. Not completely unusual, but it was hard to get used to the woman's name- Aisling "Ash-ling".

Cullain wouldn't be a particularly common name. Aisling is very common here. You get Aron's everywhere I think, though some spelled Aaron.

Caoimhe -
Kee-va

one of my best mates is called Fionan, it's a rare name even in Ireland

He had to start introducing himself to people as Fin to cut out the questions

Dang, I only got a couple right. And I really wanna learn Irish, too. ;-;
I have a friend named Kelsea who goes by the pronounciation Kaysha. Always wanted to confirm whether that was correct. Sounds like it from the examples here.

Definitely not Irish - there's no K in the alphabet, with the exception of it popping up the very odd time in Irish translations of modern English words. Such words would have had no real Irish translation so Irish words are sometimes made up for them.

Thanks for this thread OP!

I have an Irish brother in law coming to love with me in a few weeks, I will keep these around so I can casualy use them in examples.

Literally none of them.
Ditto. Got 0 right. I'm French Canadian btw.

Siobhan is another good one (sha-fawn/shi-vawn)
I knew this one because of Orphan Black, haha. Though in my head she was Shevaughn, until I looked up the casting on IMDB... >_>

Steve -
John
I laughed.

Feidhelm isn't that common is Ireland anymore unfortunately.

I have one for the thread though:

Proinsias.
That reminds me of --

prawn - shas
if I recall correctly.
Hahahah dammit beaten.

Aoife - Ahwaf
Caoimhe - Caoymeu

I'm french.
Laughed at those, because I thought the same thing. Then I thought nah, can't be it, it must be "Ee-fee" and "Kaym-hee" or something, more Englishy... nope, not even close.

You could add my name to the list. It's a rarity anyone knows how to pronounce it.
Let me guess (very likely to be 100% wrong), uh, like... "Wayne"? >.>
