I've been to 7 of the top 20 and hope to travel to Phuket and maybe Rome in 2019!

Only been to Rome and London from that list.
Hong Kong leads unchallenged... the gap gets bigger every year.

Love HK, lived and worked there for 6 months in 2014 and I hope to visit again one day.
IMO it's one of the best ways to experience China without all the visa hassle. Hotels are a little pricey, but food and transport are cheap.

7.

My favorites:
Rome and Hong Kong! It's incredible sad to see what China is doing to HK. It's one of the most unique cities in the world. Rome is incredible. There is nothing that goes close with that amount of history to what that city has endured over and over. It's just on another level. Unfortunately, like with Paris and London, Rome has its fair share of bullshit- Scammers, tourist traps, overpriced hotels and hostels, too many people tourists. If you can go to any of these places, go in the off season with less people.

HK kinda cheats by the fact that it's the #1 closest destination for billions of Chinese just across the border.

Also, HK is not really China. You won't see the REAL China by just staying in HK.

Been to London and Paris this year, not a huge fan of either city tbh. They both have a lot of things worth seeing, but I'd never want to live there.

Similarly, you won't see the real china just by staying in Beijing, Shenzhen, Taipei, Gaungzhou, Ordos or Shanghai. Hong Kong is 'a kind of' Chinese city, and there are many kinds of those.

I'd like to visit Egypt for the archeological attractions, but sadly it seems unsafe.

Are layovers counting here ? looks like the very common long flight travel areas.

Yes, as long as you exit the airport and stay for at least 24 hours in the city.

For most tourists HK offers an easily accessible introduction to China and a good representation of a cantonese city. I know people might argue that it is too westernised, but I feel the western influence has only made it more unique as a destination and does not detract from its rich cantonese culture.
