Worldwide PlayStation 3 sales reach 80 million

There's little doubt in my mind that PS3 will hit 100 million. PS1 was at 70 million when PS2 launched, and it ultimately tapped out at 102 million.

But the PS1 was only 5 years when the PS2 launched and the in the past 12 months they had shipped 21 million of it. The PS3 is already 7 years old and has only shipped 10 million in the past year.

PS2 had way better legs, but it was too younger, 6 years old when the PS3 arrived, and the yearly shipment was also higher, 13 million (for a total of 107 million).

I think there is chance for both PS3 and Xbox 360 to hit 100M, but it's very small.

I agree. The PS3 is much further into its lifespan than the PS1 and PS2 were. I think it depends in large part on how much they are able to reduce the cost. The price is still relatively high. I suppose the opening of China is a wild card, too. I wonder how much demand there is for a $150 12GB PS3?

Mainland Europes bases all belongs to Sony. UK is pretty heavy Xbox territory though maybe 60:40 now, though it appears the UK will be Sony next gen judging anecdotally and from UK statistics we have available.

I have sell-through estimates for "Europe" * through Sept 30th 2013 as:
Code:
360	19.6
PS3	23.8
Wii	27.6

Caveats: Based on Nintendo's investor presentation charts, subject to measurement error.
*N.B. It's only part of Europe:
2005/2006: UK, FR, GE
2007-2011: UK, FR, GE, SP
2012/2013: UK, FR, GE, SP, IT, NE, BE

Here's a chart depicting six years of sales posted by Parmenides a while back, which I had previously saved.

So, the combined sales of six years in continental Europe (+other) and UK is 37 million, over 15 million more than in US, and well over half of the total sum.

Just what the hell kind of gibberish is The Antitype typing?

Back on topic, I would say congrats to Sony for making a big comeback with the PS3. They have done a good job doing so after what happened to them from 2006 to August 2009.

I believe he's just deducting published UK, US and Japanese sell-through figures from worldwide shipment figures. That's not actual sell-through figures based on any point of sale retail tracker.
