Worst Controllers

Was that ever actually I thing, I see it posted in forums/image boards all the time but I've never seen a source of that being real
Very real.
Wanna know the strangest thing about it?
It also was super tiny. You can never see that on the pictures.

Edit: Hmmm.... Just googled some newer pics. Seems like I'm wrong.

The Jaguar controller face buttons were crap and the D-pad was basically unusable.

The numpad with covers was actually pretty fucking cool, actually. That is surprisingly the highlight of that controller.

Gravis was the king of awful d-pads back in the day...

I never had a Gravis pad that properly centered the d-pad.

These actually exist?! The first time I laid eyes on the Gravis gamepad was my shareware version of Jazz Jackrabbit. It was an item you grabbed for points. Holy moly!! I'm going to google this up now.

In my opinion, I would have to say the Jaguar controller is the worst. As a kid I didn't know what to do with the numberpad, I just wanted to play Gex.

Ps1, 2 and 3 controllers... Cheap plastic feeling and they can easiliy get damaged.

And i like Sony but they are really crappy i have gone through like 10 if you combine all versions. DS 4 is luckily way better and they both still work one works strange on GTA with shooting but works on al other games. i guess that has to do with a sensivity press wich ps3 games had alot and GTA 5 is a port after all.

I had one of those weird asymmetrical ones. It was total trash, and since it was pre-plug'n'play it wasn't always guaranteed to work.

I had a gamepad before all of that plug and play stuff. I enjoyed it for the side scrollers, but that was about it. I thought of picking up a game pad but I mainly use my xbox one controller as a gamepad.

Still, I went to amazon to see if they still sell Gravis gamepads. And yes they do, but I don't think by the company itself. Who knows, I'm still curious about them.

I will fucking fight both of you.

They're not wrong about build quality. Neo Geo sticks break like matchsticks. And their 1st party arcade stick decided to change the distance between stick and buttons and the angle on the ABCD buttons which takes a long time to get used to. Hori had the better product at the time.

Leaving aside freaks and looking at main controllers of mainstream machines, Gamecube and Dreamcast have to be the worst for the lack of a second analog stick. PS1 had the dualshock already well before these launched so there's no excuse.

...but the Gamecube did have a second analogue stick?

I had not even realized that the Dreamcast controller didn't have a second analog stick until now. I wonder how I missed that all this time.

This is easily the worst controller I've ever held in my hands.

Granted, it's still probably better than some of the controllers on older (pre-NES) or less popular systems, like the CD-i.

If MS rereleased that thing, 6 buttons in the front and all for the xb1, i'd instantly purchase one. Perfect size.

Obv i'd expect them to find a way to add the two bumper buttons to mirror the b/w functions.

Guessing a whole lotta halo players would do the same too.

Odd I had no problems with the N64 or Gamecube controllers, played through Banjo 1 / Tooie & Conker on N64 and don't recall ever being concerned with the controller, the only time I remember having a problem is when the analog stick wore out over the years which make it feel loose and inaccurate, but replacing the controller solved that problem.

From my personal expeirance I'd have to vote for Jaguar controller..that thing was a bulky cumborseome beast although I was able to (somewhat) get used to it.

The Switch Joycons made me spend $70 to get the pro controller so there's that. Terrible ergonomics, button placement, tiny buttons and sticks. Can't charge it in the grip unless you buy a special accessory. Yuck.

This. I just got my Switch and actually cracked up laughing when I pulled the joycons out of the box and put them in the grip. I can't believe they expect people to use this. Complete fucking trash in every way. If I don't chuck this thing after finishing Zelda, I'm going to have to shell out an absurd amount of cash for a real controller. Nintendo gonna Nintendo, I suppose.

C wasn't an analogue stick.

Yes, it is. It's internally identical to the left stick. It just has a different plastic topper. You can even take it apart and switch them or put in a left stick topper from another controller - which I once did. Turns out, I like the normal right stick topper better on that side - it feels better at that slightly different thumb angle.

Logically you'd think so, but that's not what it actually stands for. They were a "group" of buttons next to the A and B buttons. So, you have the "C" buttons.

It makes zero sense, but whatever.
It makes 100% sense and is literally what it stands for. I have no idea what you are saying here, it is a camera control d-pad, literally just a digital version of a right stick for camera control.

C wasn't an analogue stick.
I have no idea why people post things when they have clearly never used them or it would be completely obvious it is an analogue stick just with a different top. It's identical internally to the left stick.

The "bigger hands" western Sega saturn controller.
Those shoulder buttons were painfully bad.
Lets not talk about the d-pad.

Thankfully this sad excuse was replaced with the Japanese model in western markets.

Fuck that I played hours of Xmen vs Street Fighter, Marvel vs Streetfighter, and Marvel Super Heroes with that controller and never had an issue. Its my holy grail for fighting game pads.

I got the Ascii Grip on PS1.

When Final Fantasy VIII was about to be released a game store had a pre-order deal where if you pre-ordered the game you would get this great RPG controller for a cheaper price.
They said it was great for RPG's because it's a one-hand controller so you can write hints and notes down on paper while you continue playing with your other hand.

Yeah, it ended up being totally useless. And it was hell trying to play anything with it.

The CD-i controller is worse though.

Why do these threads always get so many crazy and clearly uninformed replies? It seems many here have only ever used a handful of controllers, otherwise people wouldn't say NES pad. Someone a few pages back mentioned that the Genesis pad was too small and therefore uncomfortable. The original Genesis controller was bigger than the SNES controller. That makes no sense at all. The analog Saturn pad is great too. More buttons than the Dreamcast controller, better overall feeling, better dpad and a very smooth analog stick.

Anyway, in my opinion the Master System controller is pretty bad. The dpad is imprecise, the buttons feel mushy and there are only two. I've always used a Genesis controller instead.

The shape can get uncomfortable after long periods of time sure. But the dpad uses the exact same tech and style and almost identical parts as the SNES pad, if yours is stiff it's because of wear or grime, a new one plays identically to a new SNES pad.

I still dislike both the NES and SNES Dpads. They both feel shallow and stiff. Still, the NES one was worse because it was smaller. I remember using new and mildly used NES pads since the late 80s and I always hated how badly they wore down my thumbs. It wasn't until more recently when I stated to rebuy all my systems that I discovered the dogbone controller, which I greatly prefer.

lol

Like the DC controller but worse. Analog stick was pretty smooth though.

Wrong. In every possible way, this controller is superior to the DC one. 6 larger, soft edge, convex buttons. The best Dpad of the Saturn. Slightly better grips, but much better shoulder triggers. And a goddamn cable that comes out of the correct side of the controller. If anything, Sega should have built on this design for the DC. Instead they went backwards and fumbled it big time.

This. But my main entry:

Although it feels great in your hands (very, VERY ergonomic!), there are a few problems:

- Weird shaped face buttons (probably my biggest beef)
- The Dpad is just... LOL.
- C-stick... Actually, to be honest, I don't fully understand the concept behind the C-stick
- Uneven shoulder/trigger layout... Both on one side, but only one on the left side?

It makes it impossible for me to play fighting games on the GameCube. Which is a shame, because there are some good fighting games on there (for one, arguably the best version of SoulCalibur II is on that console).

The worst post I have seen on GAF so far.

Not sure if I posted here before but I've seen this thread just now and I have no memories, so I come to say: the official standard Master System controller is the worst controller ever! A shame, because the console is my fav ever.

Fortunately, there were (are) a lot of compatible controllers, so the disenchantment didn't last too much!

Yet even 21 years later the analogue triggers feel better than anything Sony have released.

I, for one, liked the DC controller. It was very comfortable to hold but there was some pet peeves:

  1. Lack of second analog stick. At the time I didn't care, but playing now. I wished Sega revised the controller with two analog sticks.
  2. Cord was on the bottom the controller. There is a divot underneath to thread the cord through, but out of fear of ruining the cord I never used it.
  3. VMU. I'm kind on the fence about this one I do like the VMU and what it is capable of, but at the same time it was lackluster and nobody really utilized it except for visuals during game play (i.e. Quake 3, your VMU screen will show the face of the character you're playing as.)

This is always the worst example in threads like this. It hurts me every time.

Saying the legendary controller design is the worst ever, come on man.

Legendary? It sucked. Get over it. Consoles were god tier but the controller a sucked ass. It's ok to admit.

The PS4 controller is nice though but the analog sticks are it's weak point. Both in design and placement. I think it's pretty agreed upon the Xbox one has better sticks. Placement is obviously a personal preference but that's kinda the point of this thread. I don't like the triggers either and it's amazing all these years later Sony can't be bothered to give us actual triggers. MS can do it, Nintendo can do it, hell even the Saturn 3d controller had excellent analog triggers. Yet here's Sony trying to pass this shit off as triggers. I'm hoping the PS5 will improve on this regard. I think we'll just get a slightly modified PS4 controller though.

The GameCube controller is nice to hold but hot garbage otherwise. Stupid button placement, shitty triggers, dumb c stick, pointless z button. It's like they tried to make as obnoxious a controller as they could. Mission accomplished. The wavebird was a cool step in the right direction though for wireless controllers.

Every Dual Shock ever. It was a bad design to begin with and the iterations have been putting band aids on the wound. Cramped and uncomfortable. It's not The Worst, but pales in comparison to Nintendo and MS's improvements.

The gamecube controller is hideous but it was alright to actually use at the time. Of the controllers I've actually held the N64 was by far the worst, dreamcast was pretty awful as well

While it's not the worst, the shape of the Dualshocks 1 through 3 is just really not ergonomic at all. It's too geometric. I'm glad the DS4 was much smoother and better to grip.

And in other minor complaints, the buttons on the Switch's pro controller are way too... Off. Most of the buttons stick too far out, and the dpad is so stiff, playing Puyo Tetris is guaranteed to kill my thumb.

In terms of the worst I've used... It'd have to be these things.

The dpad on this thing is straight, spongy ass. It is awful. And for something meant to be used on fighting games, that is unacceptable. Not to mention it is way too small to hold properly.

There are definitely some worse controllers out there but the one that will always pop in my head first is the Dreamcast. The whole thing is a mess but I still get most confused by the cord being on the bottom of the controller; seems like it was designed that way just to be different, which is never a good idea imo.

Trying Microsoft controllers in a store is my first vivid experience of being grossed out by controller.

They had some of the most awful feeling tactile experience for a while.

I recall the Neo-geo CD controllers being fucking awful for fighters. Super embarrassing for a company known for its 2d fighters:

What? Other than hearing about people having to repair them, the neo Geo CD controller is loved. Hell I wish more controllers had microswitch thumbpads.

Oh man. Those fucking things where everywhere. It was the closest thing to a standard pc gamepad for a time. Back then if you wanted a game controller for a PC that probably meet a flight stick. Console style gamepads where much less common.
