my brother recently got their band logo tattooed on his arm while on holiday.

kinda corny lookin

is this your brother?

They openly say they made an album heavily influenced by Metallica Guns Maiden. Being surprised or shocked by that is stupid when they said thats what they were shooting for....in....every....interview.....they've .....done the last 2 months.

Number one album in the US two albums in a row in, metal no less, I think they can withstand GagaGaf thinking they suck.

The sound is so similar to Sad But True that I, until they say "no man, its all original and not inspired by that", actually think they made it as a tribute to Metallica...I mean its THAT similar.

Kinda like on Godsmacks first album they had that song that was exactly like a NIN song...names are lost on me right now..

Fake edit: Here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrqV736HAWM

(Granted, this was Godsmacks first album, and they were probably lacking material, as they have turned into one of the top acts in hard rock, Oracle was their best and most creative album yet...I dont think they ever have been accused of anything since either.)

I also think there are only so many riffs you can have with 6 strings, and so many drum beats you can make with a bass drum, a few snares and some brass...

A7X is on my ipod, its gym music, thats all any of this really is for me now, so as long as it rocks, its OK with me.

Wow that did sound a lot closer to Metallica than I was expecting. I always knew these guys were jokes but damn I didn't think they'd stoop to this.

Eh, Led Zeppelin did the same shit, lots of artists do. I don't care for sevenfold, but just because they took some shit is meaningless.

Damn. The drums are even mixed to sound like Metallica. I enjoy playing a couple of their songs on drums but really find them overall to be pretty uninspiring...

Garbage can be recycled. The circle of trash continues.

Waking the fallen was a great album live too. Lots of energy. Shows were at smaller venues. Mosh pits were rad. Everyone stopped for solos to rock.

I couldn't believe the transformation they went through.

I was waiting for this thread because their new album is SUCH A FUCKING RIPOFF OF THE BLACK ALBUM. Dude's even trying to sound like nasal James Hetfield.

I think so too. Sidewinder is specially awesome.

1. Waking the Fallen
2. City of Evil
3. Sounding the Seventh Trumpet

I got into 'em when I listened to Darkness Surrounding on the 2003 warped tour cd. Everything after City of Evil is extremely depressing.

These songs are just clones. Saying you're shooting for clones and delivering doesn't make it any better.

Oh snap, I didn't no that I was stepping into "Hardcore Teen" GAF when I clicked this link. It's so bad that people are actually claiming that their first album was good.

Sounding the Seventh Trumpet was trash, and it's embarrassing to see people admit to liking it. Waking the Fallen was awesome. City of Evil was awesome. Self-titled was slightly less awesome. Nightmare was just okay, but to be fair their drummer had just died. And I haven't listened to the new album yet, but I do love me some good old thrash metal.

Last time I listened to these guys was Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. Can't believe it's been a decade already. Always meant to check out their other stuff but never did. Plus I lost interest in this kind of music.

And Machine Head was one of my favorite bands in the 90's.

Not even remotely embarrassed to say I liked Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, it got me interested, and Waking The Fallen was releasing a month after I first heard it which prompted me to get that.

I like Sounding and think self-titled is pretty self-indulgent.

It's really, really uncanny, though - like, comically so - and of popular songs that many of their fans would know well. This isn't Led Zeppelin levels of artistic plagiarism, it's as close to copy & paste as you can get without trying. "Cover album" indeed.

Funny.

Sure, if you like bland, low-quality instrumentals and Shadows whining like his vocal cords are burnt out. But there's also some screaming and it wasn't popular, so it's awesome! Punk!

It's bad and you should feel bad.

They said the whole time this album was an album of their influences. I like the album, especially Doing Time which is the GNR influenced song.

You must've listened to the wrong songs from them.

Machine Head and Vio-lence - Flynn is awesome.

Sorry, I hate Machine Head. Never liked them , never will.

Now Vio-Lence on the other hand...YES. Eternal Nightmare is my favorite Thrash Metal album, hands down.

Pretty solid album. Coming Home is my favorite...not too sure who (and if) it's influenced by.

It's obviously inspired by Sad But True, especially the opening. But it's not even close to being a total ripoff. If it were a total ripoff it would actually sound good because Sad But True is a great song. The song sucks, and I like some of A7X's stuff.

Listen to more hip-hop and reggae if you want some real ripoffs.

I was listening to that new Eminem song wondering why the fuck I liked it, until I realized that it's basically The Stroke with different lyrics.

This is basically like the whole Bloodstains/Come Out and Play fiasco, with some people claiming it's a rip-off while others point out that it's just a tribute. The only difference is that Metallica won't spend the next few years whining about this.

I bought the album and liked it. Its not their best but its more straight up metal which is ok I guess. I'm weird since I'm the only person who likes metal alive that can listen to Bloodbath, Opeth, and then Avenged Sevenfold to Trivium to Dream Theater and like it all fine apparently. I know thats not the case but damn you guys are bitchy.

Also that blog post was funny.

I wouldn't call myself a metalhead, but I feel similar to you. I really like Opeth, Avenged Sevenfold, and Trivium. Haven't listened to Bloodbath or much of Dream Theater.

? Whatever you say. Just going to ignore you.

I like the tone of their instruments, but I don't like their singer at all.
And wow after listening to those songs, almost blatant ignorance?

I am on the same page with this guy, you're not alone metal brother.

I haven't heard it, but I can imagine since there's a lot of examples like that in hip-hop.

A real ripoff of Sad But True would be something like if Kid Rock were to claim that American Badass is a completely original song. Or like when Vanilla Ice was trying to act like Ice Ice Baby had nothing to do with Under Pressure.

Or like when this guy covered My Immortal, changed the name of the song, and put it on his album. lol

Avenged Sevenfold sounds like music for people whose favorite rapper is Kid Rock.

It's music for the sort of kid who would be a hardcore Linkin Park fan, but lives in a household where the TV is permanently stuck on Fox News.

Went to see a show of theirs in Colorado about a week ago. Pretty cool stage. Shame that the crowd was not that into it. Must be the new songs? They played Unholy Confessions and that didn't even get a moshpit.

Hell, VOLBEAT even got mosh pits on the same night.

City of Evil is pretty rad, tho.

Haven't listened to the album yet, but holy fuck that does sound way more like Sad but True than I was expecting. Jesus...

Yeah I didn't like Hail To The King at all, but as a whole band, they're OK.
Avenged Sevenfold is still their best album, imho.
I hate the first two christian pieces of shit to be honest, City Of Evil is good.

I only pick up the band because Beast and the Harlot showed up on Guitar Hero. City of Evil was a great purchase, but by the end of Avenged Sevefold I felt I had run my course with the band. Seems like I didn't miss out on anything.

Seriously though, the delivery of the vocals makes it sound like a completely different song from Metallica. Without the intro, most wouldn't even recognize the inspiration.

Are you being serious here? He sounds like he's trying to emulate Hetfield's delivery in that song, too...

I owned Waking the Fallen and City of Evil, but I was never really a fan of these guys. The most I could say is that I had to learn Unholy Confessions with one of my old bands so we could have more songs to play at backyard gigs.

A couple of friends of mine actually went to a gig they had in Nashville, and one of them said that the entire band left the stage so the guitarist could do some wankery for 15 minutes.
