City of Evil will always be incredible, but this new album is terrible. It's so straightforward with a 4/4 beat basically the entire way through.

Would've liked to hear a Iron Maiden "Trooper" clone song as well.

Papa Roach took a riff from the Iron Maiden song "Ghangis Khan" and turned in their big hit "Last Resort". The guitar player denied he ever heard the song.

Not only Iron Maiden's Genghis Khan, but also Infinite Dreams.
But then again Iron Maiden rips off themselves because they can.

Uh... WHAT?!

Avenged was good for Waking the Fallen. They were a small more underground band at that time though. The next album they got signed to a big record label and have been shit ever since.

I remember going to the new album tour at the time. The one after Waking the Fallen. Don't remember the name. The majority of the fans at the show were not happy.

Those fans are crazy. City of Evil is the only decent album these guys ever released. M. Shadows growly/screamy voice was even worse than his singing voice.

I'm not the biggest Machine Head fan, but dude's right on the ball about A7X, a band that should really fade into obscurity. I'm really disappointed that they represent metal to some extent for the mainstream audience.

I gotta be honest, Avenged have sucked for a long ass time, but I've never been one to get all riled up over the whole "ripped off" thing.

This is not the typical rip off thing though. To a point it's not surprising to rip other bands off, but this is really REALLY bad. I mean the worst I've heard probably ever. They were not influenced, they straight up jacked songs. I mean, did you listen to any of them yet? It's...wow.. haha

...
Its only in the last couple of years since the blackening (awesome album) that they have been any good and that was because they started copying bands like trivium, arch enemy and early metallica.

So I like early Metallica (check) I like trivium (check) but had never heard of Arch Enemy.

I spent some time digging around, and came up with enough to get a big taste of their music.

Dude... LOOOOOVE their openings and the power of their songs. Fucking insane!
Till that guy starts singing. Sorry. I mean musically they are like.... umm... a gorgeous tornado wrapped up in a sexy maelstrom that is stuffed inside a Lamborghini Murcielago that is then put through a wood chipper.

It's easy for me to listen to insane thrash stuff but I can't deal with the growling style one single bit. But that is quite a tough recommendation, because on one hand I L O V E it. I mean love it. On the other hand, I cannot listen to it. So what's a guy to do? :(

Wow. Arch Enemy... we could have been really special...

FUCK!

which era Arch Enemy have you been listening to? After their 3rd album they had a chick as their singer who sounded a lot more gruff and went way downhill.

Black Earth was a lot of Carcass - Heartwork leftover stuff from Mike Amott, Stigmata was average, Burning Bridges was basically early Ozzy + Judas Priest + Maiden + King Diamond tribute. Midway Arch Enemy is when they started to blend in with the Machine Head/Lamb of God/rest of the New Wave of American Metal type stuff.

I have a real love/hate with early Arch Enemy. At times they have some great ideas paying tribute to old Maiden/Priest/Ozzy, then other times it sounds like they wrote songs for a sitcom.

Well, this piece someone posted here earlier. I'm assuming this is saying that this insulting lifestyle is being gay, or are there other insulting 'lifestyles' in the USA I don't know about? Plus the guy is doing the classic 'faggot' insult shouts at the video someone posted.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting this stuff, though, that's why I asked. Haven't looked into this band before this.

Have you looked at the full lyrics, or even the title? It's clear that the people he's singing about are being "critical" and "pointing fingers":

All the way from the east to the west
We got this high society
Looking down on their very foundation
Constantly reminding us that our actions
Are the cause of all their problems
Pointing their fingers in every
Direction, blaming their
Own nation for who wins the elections
They've never contributed a fucking thing to the
Country they love to criticize

You could look at that verse and gather that he's targeting anti-gay activists. The song's clearly political, but assuming it has anything to do with homosexuality is a really, really big stretch.

Personally, I always assumed it was about the Westboro Baptist Church folks, who actually do go around mocking soldiers at their funerals and blaming them for pretty much everything bad. The WBC was actually a pretty hot-button issue when the song came out.

I liked a song off Avenged Sevenfold's first album. Ah, those naive days before I knew about metalcore and every band trying to sound Swedish.

I'd be pretty pissed if I were the frontman of Machine Head, too. It's almost as embarrassing as being Justin Bieber's backup singer.
Yeah, must suck being an integral part of a band that's responsible for one of the most critically acclaimed metal albums of the 2000s.

Haha i know what you mean.

Ive been saying for years that arch enemy would be my favourite band if they had a singer i liked.

As a guitar player i listen to the music first and learnt to block out the vocals.

Michael Amott is a beast, check out carcass for some more of his work.

Gotta give her credit for running with the men though, she has more balls than most of them, just not my cup of tea.

I'd say just get used to the vocals, but I guess they're not for everyone.

You might want to check out Disarmonia Mundi, Mercenary, Scar Symmetry, and the first three albums by Sonic Syndicate.

Scar Symmetry. Mostly clean vocals. Awesome song.

now we've gone from talking about crappy pop metal and groove bands to crappy melodeath.

also, growls are awesome (so long as they aren't frog inhales or pig squealing)

Maybe it's because I'm a huge pre-Angela Arch Enemy fan, or I've just been listening to "harsh" vocals for so long, but I don't even consider his vocals on songs like this to be that harsh.

The solo in Let the Killing Begin was actually sampled in the opening to Full House.

As someone who first discovered machinehead via "The Blackening," it's so odd to hear people talking about the nu-metal albums as if they actually matter.
