I will defend City of Evil until the day I die.

City of Evil is awesome. Way better than 80% of the stuff that has been released the past 10 years.

I think so too. Sidewinder is specially awesome.

I like you, all of you. I'm really surprised to see several people speaking up for City of Evil. My favorite album by them by a long shot. They lost me mostly on their self-titled, then Nightmare took care of any interest I had left. I still think Synyster Gates is a great guitarist, though.

Er...on topic, This Means War / Sad But True is ridiculous. Same tempo and tuning/key just makes it all the more obvious, not that it needed it.

When are they going to just go by their regular names? The whole silly names thing works when you're like 20...

Particularly given they aren't giving the new drummer a weird name.

The Beast and the Harlot sure was fun to play in Guitar Hero 2. That's pretty much the full extent of my experience with Avenged Sevenfold.

Last good album was Nightmare.

I stopped listening to that type of music now since it all sounds like the same and like shit to me but I can still tell if something is good or not. The new record isn't.

RIP the Rev

I bought the album and liked it. Its not their best but its more straight up metal which is ok I guess. I'm weird since I'm the only person who likes metal alive that can listen to Bloodbath, Opeth, and then Avenged Sevenfold to Trivium to Dream Theater and like it all fine apparently. I know thats not the case but damn you guys are bitchy.

Also that blog post was funny.

:high five:

If I enjoy it, I'm going to listen to it.

Been listening to A7X since sounding the seventh trumpet and have loved every album since.

Can't wait for Dream Theater's new album at the end of the month!

I would've stuck with Mike Portnoy

Portnoy tried to go back to DT, but they were mad and told him to sod off.

Man, Sanders vocals sound fucking rough on this; its like the improvment in nasalyness on Nightmare's been reverted and he's back to City of Evil era nasal whining. It baffles me because he sounded pretty damn awesome on Waking the Fallen on the singing parts.

Looking over their writing credits on wikipedia, The Rev literally wrote all their good songs. I didn't know he wrote that many, and that would explain why they're new album is so imitative. He wrote Bat Country, Almost Easy, and all their other more unique songs. When the lost him, they lost their voice. Didn't know he wrote as much as he did, but now it all makes sense. This isn't the same band at all.

I will defend to the death how awesome every Avenged album from Waking the Fallen up to and including Nightmare was. They're all amazing. The new one, maybe not.

Eh, I wasn't a big fan of Nightmare. It just didn't feel as inspired as their other albums imo.

Wow, thought the songs would sound 'sorta' like originals but those ripoffs are super blatant. I didn't like this band when I heard it in Guitar Hero either, so meh.

I don't wanna get into a fight over who listens to what here but ... doesn't it bother you that this band seems to base a whole album on ripoff songs? I mean I could understand one song, 2 could be a coincidence but this... wow. It's kinda depressing they'd go this way, reeks of creative bankruptcy.

Aww, I'm guessing you are a fan.

Though, i guess in a way they were smart enough to rip off songs old enough that the current crowd would not recognize.

it's not a coincidence though. They said this album was going to be basically a tribute album to the bands that influenced them w/o being a straight cover album.

It's really that simply.

Honestly, I think it's the worse of their albums because it's boring. If I wanted to listen to 80's/early 90's metal I will go do so.

they didn't do covers because that would cost em a lot of money.
shamelessly ripping off songs and selling them as "your own" is way cheaper.

If you want to do a tribute album to praise your heroes do it Trvium "The Crusade"-style.
write your own damn songs.

City of Evil and self-titled were awesome. The second album had one good song, the rest of the first two was bad. Still one of the best new bands from the 2000s. Which isn't saying much.

So how does it feel to know that someone's kid
In the heart of America has blood on their hands
Fighting to defend your rights
So you can maintain a lifestyle
That insults his family's existence

Hmm... I wonder what that could mean. lol

Well, Wikipedia says this fwiw

The songÂ’s lyrical meaning is a criticizing attack on people who, according to the band, are in their turn criticizing the soldiers of the United States of America for engaging in the Iraq War conflict, without trying to find a solution to end the ongoing war. Avenged Sevenfold lead singer M. Shadows has close friends who have experienced military service in Iraq.

The band sounds dumber and dumber the more I hear of them. M. Shadows, the great thinker of our time.

wat

And you think you can pull this sort of shit off in a song, why? Numbnuts.

That doesn't even begin to explain those lines.

Wrong. Whether you like the lyrics or not, that's a pretty valid interpretation and if you think otherwise your comprehension skills are lacking.

Don't hate just for the sake if it.

Maybe it is an indictment of homosexuality after all but that doesn't mean the wiki entry is bullshit.

What lifestyle do you think they're referring to? I'd love to hear your theories on this.

So the long and short of the thread is that the frontman of a plagiarizing pop metal act is also a homophobic jingo asshole, or am I getting wrong impression here somehow?

Is it not possible for me to say I love their music while disagreeing with some of their views? I mean, I dont agree with the sentiments in some of their songs, but they're still awesome songs.

Waht. Where did you pull that out of?

Well, this piece someone posted here earlier. I'm assuming this is saying that this insulting lifestyle is being gay, or are there other insulting 'lifestyles' in the USA I don't know about? Plus the guy is doing the classic 'faggot' insult shouts at the video someone posted.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting this stuff, though, that's why I asked. Haven't looked into this band before this.

What, no. It was basically what the quote above said. Listen to the whole song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTHv7UCiXf4

That quote was pulled from this verse:

I've had enough its time for something real
I don't Respect the words you're speaking
gone too far, a clone
So how does it feel to know that someones kid in the heart of America
Has blood on their hands, fighting to defend your rights
So you can maintain the lifestyle that insults this family's existence
Well, where I'm from we have a special salute we aim high in the air
Towards all those pompous assholes who spend their days pointing fingers

Ok :) Reading the whole lyrics makes it clearer what it's about. So it's just pro-war, 'shut up stupid hippies' kinda of thing. Not a huge fan still, but at least it wasn't as bad as it seemed separately. Thanks!
