WWDC09 Thread of iPhones and Snow Leopards

1. all iphones get it.
To clarify, all devices get it. I just upgraded my iPod Touch 2G to the 3.0 final leak and it features voice memo. Might be useful to those with the earbuds with built-in micro on a touch...

What an amazing keynote. I had everything I hoped for: cheaper, faster unibody MacBook (now Pro) with backlit keyboard on the lowest tier (which I ordered in the low-end 13" flavor with a 250GB HDD a few hours ago), iPhone OS 3.0 and a Snow Leopard release date and price...take notes, Microsoft, this is how your conferences should be.

I was really excited when I heard about the 13 inch Macbook Pro. But now I'm wondering what exactly is "Pro" about it. I wanted all the power of the 15 inch into the 13, but no discrete graphics card? Wtf?

Backlit keyboard, better monitor that's also LED backlit, firewire 800, faster processor, 7 hour battery life all for $100 less..

Good stuff from Apple today. The MacBook Pros are so nice right now that I almost wish I was in the market for one. I'm happy they've made Snow Leopard cheap for Leopard users - they convinced me to pull the trigger. The 3GS is a nice upgrade, but nothing I can't wait a year to get (+ whatever new goodies the 2010 iPhone brings).

Also, fuck AT&T and that whole stupid oligopolistic industry.

Wasn't there a backlit keyboard/LED screen on the normal "Macbooks"? Putting back Firewire shouldn't be considered as a "Pro" thing to do, since it's on this Macbook that I bought last year. Faster processor and the embedded battery life are also just natural progressions of what Apple should be offering.

Idk, I just got really excited for a second about the discrete graphics card (mostly cause I'm going into video editing), but it kinda just seems like a bait and switch to me. Oh well, I guess its the 15 inch for me.

Backlit keyboard was only on the higher end models. Firewire 800 was never offered on Macbooks. Very worthwhile improvements for $100 less than what they were before.

The only difference between now are dedicated GPUs--something that Apple felt wasn't enough to really differentiate them since they share so many features now. If you really need a dedicated GPU, then yeah the 15" is what you'll be looking at.

My guess is that they promoted the MacBook to MacBookPro because they are making room for netbook-like machines below.

The WhiteBook has always had FireWire

Edit: Nvm, that was FireWire 400. Sorry :D

Figures, my important question was the last post on the last page.

Does anyone know about the user serviceability of the new MBP's? HD and RAM wise? Is the bottom still removable?

Because if the ability to replace the RAM and HD without paying Apple for it is removed, that's a huge deal breaker.

I am bummed they are not adding voice control to the 3G. One feature I am really missing because I can't change songs easily (or safely) while I drive.

Other than that I am content with the 3G and don't feel that huge upgrade urge.

Nice updates on the laptops. Too bad we are moving or I would snag a 12

you are thinking of it the wrong way. this is more of a backstep in terms of labeling. i think the unibody is now what defines the MBP (excluding the Air). apple wants this premium design to represent the pro lines.

the features standard in the base MBP = the highest unibody MB, which many thought was a pro anyway. the public has gotten used to the uMB not being pro already. when they were announced, everyone was asking "why arent these just the macbook pro? you cant tell a pro apart anymore!". now its the other way around, and better for it. also keep in mine, the BASE 15" MBP does NOT have the dedicated GPU card.

So has anyone confirmed that the new 13" MacBook Pro's can still be user serviced in regards to the HD and RAM? Because I'd be upgrading both before I even boot it up the first day I get it. So I would hope that they kept the ability in to access them without breaking warranty. I ask because of the new integrated battery. Is the bottom still removable?

i asked this earlier and someone answered but i forgot. expect it to be similar to the 17" which are doable, just not as easy obviously. its just some screws and your in. i think he posted a youtube clip.

I really like the idea of buying the biggest, fasted SD card I can find and just keeping it as another storage option.

Maybe its already been mentioned, if so, i apologise.

Anyway, after seeing the lower pricing for Snow Leopard, i'll be buying when its available. Having never done a major OSX upgrade before, is there a way to upgrade without losing all my files? Or does it require a clean start.
I do have everything backed up with Time Machine if that helps.

Yeah, you can upgrade without losing anything. Hell, I think it even keeps your "open at launch" settings.

How does the Snow Leopard upgrade work?

Since this is the first time I am upgrading the Mac OS, what exactly do I get for $29? Do I get an install disc that only works with pre-installed Leopard and whenever I wipe my Mac, I need to reinstall Leopard and then reinstall the upgrade to Snow Leopard?

thats wat it sounds like, yes. however someone mentioned earlier that apple is very trusting. the editing of one file or something on their update disks allow the disk to go from upgrade to full blown standalone OS.

I would hope they implement something slick like on a clean install just requiring you to pop in your leopard disk for a hot second to verify.

Well I just bought a new unibody Macbook last week for my long trip to China. Now they updated it within my 14 day return period and I'm here in China for another few weeks. There's an Apple Store here in Beijing but they just said they won't have the new units for another month due to government certification.

I'm not really mad since I really like the thing but it would have been nice to get the update if I were home. Ah well.

Call and see if you can mail it or something?

I'm really annoyed that they updated the MacBooks, I bought mine about 6 months ago but it still bites, as I could really do with the longer battery life for travel.

Yeah tomorrow my partner is going to the San Francisco Apple Store to see if I have any options. It would be pretty silly to spend all that money shipping my computer halfway around the world to get a small bump. We'll see what happens though.

Horay, O2 are saying the UK release date is the 19th June! I was afraid I was going to have to wait till August.

It's an inbuilt battery though. I'd rather purchase and extra battery and have the option of replacing it, rather than a longer lasting internal battery

Looks like that, I guess they don't want to fragment their laptop lineup further. I saw Air as a prototype and will be phased out in time as its unibody and other features are used in the Macbooks. Not sure if they would call the the rumoured tablet a 'Macbook' though, but that could be a bold move to push tablet into the mainstream.

When we upgrade OSX, does it do a clean install or does it keep your files/programs (one partition) ?

EDIT: Seems so (from page 32):

Will I be able to keep my files and programs upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard?

The new MBP is really tempting but I can't justify the upgrade when my 2006 MBP CoreDuo stills runs really well for what I use it for. Only problem with the computer in the last year is sometimes it does not fall asleep or wake up properly. Otherwise the computer runs as smooth as butter as long as I am not running too much flash, but flash runs like ass on everything.
LCfiner said:
absolutely. it'll be the same as upgrading from tiger to leopard and no one lost any files or programs from that.

they "promoted it to pro" because sales have been flagging, and the parts they were using to differentiate the two have a marginal cost of several dollars.

i think what they've found is that people who just want the cheapest apple don't really care whether their case has a name that evokes 70s foreign automobiles, or how much it weighs. the netbook will probably slot under the plastic macbook, so it doesn't really affect the change of the al 13" to pro.

Very glad with the 13" macbook pro upgrade as I'm looking to get one in the near future.

Man I want one of those 13" MacBookPros :(

I wonder how much I could get for this shitty HP Laptop i bought a year ago. I fucking hate it so very much. Never again.

The free iPod Touch makes it even harder to pass up on the MBP (even though I already have an iPhone, I could sell it or give it as a gift to a family member).
Where?

Hmm, I haven't the foggiest... If you log into the student site for your college it should be on the front page the offer. It was for me when I signed in that's how I found out.

Did some digging and there's something similar...but no ipod touch, just a price reduction. New 13" macbook pro is 1300euro instead of 1450euro...so that's pretty good. Will have to be fast cause my student card will be running out soon.

Color me impressed with Safari 4. I've been using it for various tasks and using the new features, and Safari has now overtaken Firefox as my main browser. I can't wait for iPhone 3.0! I was disappointed that the matte back was, for now, a false rumor. So for now I'll stick with my original 1st gen iPhone.

What are the thoughts on Safari 4 now that it's been out for a day?

I feel your pain. I have the 2.4 gig unibody that I bought 4 months back. I could have had the 2.53 with 4 gigs and better battery for less money. But if you think about it, when the Core i7 Macbook (pro) come out at the end of this year, people buying the current version will be really frustrated. If my iBook G4 hadn't broken, I would have stuck it out for the Core i7, since they are beasts.

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking too. These upgrades are REALLY sweet, but Core i7 will be hitting Macbooks in the next half a year or so. I just hope Apple sticks with the new reasonable prices for their models going forward.

I didn't realize that that 13" MBP didn't have imporved video-- not enough to make we want to upgraed after all, despite that nice case and increased mem capacity.

I recently got a Touch Diamond to use on SERO, but I hate the phone.
I really want to get one of these new iphones, but is it worth all the extra cost?

Is 32GB the largest capacity nand flash that's reasonably priced right now? What's the future look like in the next 12-18 months for these? Will we be seeing 64GB or better for the next iPhone release next year?

The big thing is the new battery.

The really big thing is the Pro-level screen.

Firefox 3.5 is out within a month and it's even better. But yeah, Safari 4 rocks, especially since getting rid of tabs-on-top (dreadful).

I have to say, I want a 3GS but given that the 3.0 firmware has references to a new iPhone 2,1 model AND to an iPhone 3,1, I worry that something even better could be just around the corner, as much as that'd be bad business practice.

I have an 8GB first gen iPhone and made up my mind back in December to replace it with the newest refresh to be announced at WWDC09. About six weeks ago my iPhone's screen developed a serious flaw (a portion in the middle of the touchscreen stopped responding to touch, making many tasks difficult and a few impossible). I'm bound to get one or the other of the 3GS models.

The question I have is... does anyone have a reason, other than convenience of having more stuff with you at a time, that I should opt for the 32GB over the 16GB? I haven't really felt much limited by the 8GB on my current phone, I just make certain to manage my music library and carry no more than one movie with me at a time. In terms of iPod media the 16GB will be fine.

So my question is more about Apps. Are there any current or expected future apps which will require so much internal memory that 16GB users will be hamstrung? Because of my experience so far with iPhone I'm aware that I'll be more-or-less locked into my current purchase for another two years.

I really thought my 8GB would be enough but throw in myst (700 mb) and a few movies and I'm all of a sudden limited to <1gb of music. I always get the lowest option memory iPhone and a few months later regeted it. I'm still not too sure if I'm going to spend the extra $100 on the 32gb version myself.

I guess the moral of the Story is buy as much as you can afford.

I suppose the TomTom GPS app will be a bit bigger than most apps.

I don't know if that's worth me upgrading ahead of my expected schedule. My Macbook is just a little over a year old. I think I'll probably wait another year.

Finally updating my First Gen iPod Touch to 3.0 GM now. (had about 3GBs of updates to do first). Ah, the perks of being a paying iPhone Dev :D

I was in the same boat. I am fine with my current 8GB OG iPhone, and 16GB would be more than enough for me. That said, you are signing a contract for two years that means you're going to be stuck with this phone unless you pay the exorbitant fee to opt out of the contract or upgrade with a non-subsidized price. For $100 more you get twice the storage capacity. I figured I may as well buy the top of the line model now and hope it can tide me over for the next two years. It'll be interesting, I've never even had an MP3 player with over 20GB of space.

So is it worth it for the new iPhone? Or should I buy the $99 one now that it's so cheap?

Saving $100 over 2 years isn't that great of a deal IMO. The data and voice plan rate will be identical, so I would say go for the higher storage and faster speed of the phone if you can afford the extra $100 up front.
