WWDC10 Thread of iPhones and iProducts galore

Boom goes the dynamite.

Apple had the exact same problem on the 27 inch iMacs, and it took them awhile to fix the issue. Here is hoping the white iPhone will be fixed, but I doubt it since they are likely being manufactured now using the same screen and process.

Isn't the iPad processor at 1ghz? If so that can't be accurate cuz supposedly benchmarks are slower on the iPhone 4 over the iPad.

In addition to iOS4 they may be underclocking the processor to increase battery life.

Is that on every screen or what's the chance of it looking like that?

I really hope the bad display is only a fluke and isn't a frequent problem.

And they could have underclocked it. They completely took the chip apart with the iPad and found it to be at 1 GHz. Time will tell and someone much more technically gifted than myself will test it and determine the exact speed.

Not every iMac had the problem, I think this will be the same case with the iPhone - some will have it, some will be lucky and will be clean.

I really hope they fix it within the month, but it did take them over 5 months to fix the 27'' iMac.

Just held the new iPhone and tried it out for a few minutes. Someone at the company we're contracted to currently got it in already so it was nice to play around with for a few minutes.

The phone is pretty nice with the new design, but kinda as I expected, the screen didn't scream night and day difference to me. Sure it was nice and bright, but it didn't feel like Nintendo DS -> Nintendo DS Lite difference in quality. I didn't have my phone on me to compare directly so maybe it'll be more noticeable then but simply picking it up, it didn't floor me like all the hype is being pushed around here.

The other thing that sorta sucked is signal is sorta iffy inside the building here; 3G fluctuates quite a bit but the guy said signal still sucks inside the building. I was hoping the new design would stabilize the signal, but I guess it can't solve everything.

Other than those two things, it's nice, a fingerprint magnet, snappy and should be a great upgrade from my 3G, but I think between my wife getting it, and having now played with it, I think I can hold out for white, especially after seeing how smudged up his phone was already.

So, crappy screen, crappy signal, crappy prints all over it.

Thanks for the review!

Any idea what the ratio was on the iMac? Just curious what the likely probability might be, also how good is Apple about swapping devices because of the problem?

Yay, thanks for being a perfect example of the problem here. Over exagerating the issue. Did I say the screen was crappy? No. Did I say the signal was crappy? No. Why not come down to reality?

Jesus. Let's say it was one display in every 2000. Does that help you in any way ?

If you buy one and it's defective, I'm sure you can take it back. Just breathe slowly and you will be alright.

Sure that would help a lot versus like a 50/50 chance. Geez, Apple fans sure are touchy. If I'm going to be waiting overnight for the phone, I would sure hate to wait for a screen that has to be replaced if there is a high percentage.

completely random, but whenever I see the word "Facetime" I mentally read it with the old NBA Jam announcer voice. It sounds like something he'd say.

I love how the bad impressions are mostly "the screen isn't THAT awesome" or "OH FUCK IT HAS SEAMS ON THE EDGES OH FUCK" or "I CANNOT HANDLE FINGERPRINTS"

All of this completely unimportant aesthetic minutia. Since when are fingerprints and border seams even remotely a metric by which to judge the quality of a phone? I don't get it.

Apple allegedly halted production of the 27'' iMac in early 2010 to fix it - so that kind of says how much it effected the assembly line, IMO.

Apple also offered 15% refunds to customers because of the problem.

Of course you can take it back. But good luck getting a replacement any time soon...

Who here would know what the numbers are anyway ? Even if I was secretly Phil Schiller, would I tell you what the numbers were ?

If you are worried about the screen issue, don't buy one. If you aren't worried, then buy one knowing you can get it replaced. Fretting about it won't help.

Marty, how could anyone possibly know how big of a problem the screen thing is?

It's like you're a machine that spits out insane, stupid ramblings and sincere hypothetical questions.

Holy crap, I'm not asking how many iPhones are defective. I'm asking how many Macs were so I can extrapolate to get an idea of how widespread the problem was before.

BTW Liu Kang, you're one to talk after attacking people for wanting a case because they were worried about scratching the back. Sure enough, there's already a report that the glass is different and is scratchable.

If those are the only negatives, I'd say that's great to hear.

I've yet to see a bad impression, unless you are considering everything that does not say it is the Jesus phone a bad impression.
"I CAN SEE FOR THE FIRST TIME. THANK YOU APPLE."
Everyone has so far seemed to agree that it's incredibly hard to top, and whether or not it's worth it comes down to the individual.

if you are waiting all night for it.. then at least you have the convenience of opening it up at the store and checking there.. not that hard...

Unlike the others who have it shipped and will have schedule genius appointments..

Not sure why you are complaining.. they'd just replace it with one of the phones not held for reserve.

Sure, you might have to wait a while, but it's a tiny yellow blotch in the corner, so who cares right ?

Oh wait... The same people who mutter insane ramblings to themselves while eating the dead flies collected on the windowsill and drawing pictures of women with knives in their faces.

I think people who had defective iMac screens would take major issue with you saying this is the "exact same problem" that the iMacs had.

The discoloration on the iPhone is like 5% of the screen. iMacs had flickering issues and entire 27" panels with yellow discoloration.

This looks annoying, and probably more annoying as you'll have to wait for a replacement until all the iPhone 4 hype dies down and they are readily available, but hardly that big of a deal.

Plus, 600,000 or whatever were already preordered, there will be problems with a launch of a device on such a massive scale.

I have seen what the resolution / pixels size looks like on Evo 4G, which has lower resolution and larger screen than Iphone 4. Still, the pixels are so small on Evo that it makes my 3GS screen look like I'm looking at DS screen in comparison with its so much more visibly chunkier pixels. It's quite mindblowing to thing that pixels on 4 are even smaller than that, they are near invisible to me on Evo already.

"You're one to talk" implies that what you're about to write is at all relevant to what's currently being discussed.

Again it's you taking one report of something and making it into a big deal.

Scratches in Glass are pretty easy to fix, just get a polishing kit. The stainless will scratch like a mofo but if you got a polishing kit it should be fine.

Here is a scientific poll which (currently) indicates that OVER HALF OF ALL IPHONE 4 SCREENS ARE DEFECTIVE:

I retract all previous statements made about Marty. Irregardless of whether or not they were made by me.

It might just be me, but the new phone is dropping A LOT more calls than my old 3G did (which almost never dropped any calls).

Really the only complaint I have so far. Just such a huge upgrade over the 3G. Everything is so damn snappy on it.

Dude fuck you, take that shit back. YOU'RE dropping calls.

Just want to join in on the fun. :/

No, you're making it a big deal. I wasn't saying fuck Apple, they suck. I was merely asking how bad the problem was on the Mac so I could figure out what reasonable odds were.

I didn't realize trying to learn about a problem before I made a purchase was such a crime. I'm buying the phone, I just wanted to have a better understanding of the situation.

But hey if everything isn't perfect and peachy, I guess you're anti Apple and anti iPhone.
