They have replacable iphone4s already?

a guy on SomethingAwful got his phone at like 4 and made an appointment at 8pm at an applestore to get it replaced.

which makes no sense because they arent even for sale until tomorrow. But its true

Hadn't seen this posted yet, very fun read/interesting.

512 MB RAM Absolutely confirmed, 1ghz Samsung A4 chip, 1420mAh battery, Gorilla Glass on front.

Looks like they corrected the CDMA stuff they had earlier.

As for the antenna, it seems very unlikely that your hand could block anything, considering the exact same thing happens when you hold any phone. There are variables that need to be considered.

If we have them, doesn't it make sense that they have them?

my point is, i can't walk in and buy one until tomorrow

i know they HAVE them

either way, if you have the yellow spot just go return it

yes.

don’t drop it.

It's easier said then done. Accidents happen. I've dropped my Curve a dozen times without a case. Once I had it laying in the passenger seat when I came to an abrupt stop and it flew forward, ricocheted off the glove box down to the floor mat. Other times I had it sitting loose on my lap and was distracted for whatever reason, stood up quickly, and sent it flying. My phone still works and has no cracks, although there is a very tiny scratch that isn't obvious without close inspection.

It's not that you're blocking them. It's the fact that you're connecting the two together that seems to be the possible issue. Again, I can't believe Apple would have overlooked this so it must be something else, but so far the reports seem to be when you bridge the two antennas together by touching them both at the same time, that's when the signal drops.

why? if your phone does it..return it.

People have already gotten their yellow spotted displays replaced at apple stores.

because dude, it just is.

I understand and appreciate that it's a pretty painless task to drive to an apple store and replace it, but still. Some of us are really looking forward to the device, and I'd like to not be troubled with getting a replacement unit, should I have the reception problem.

Considering that this phone is apparently all glass now, does it instantly break when dropped?

Yeah it uses plate glass like they used in the early 20th century. I wouldn't squeeze it too hard either, you could smash it and cut up your hands pretty bad.

yes, it’s made out of glass but it’s super strong and much less likely to crack than plastic.

If you’re worried about impact damage, then cases are going to be available, just like before. but this phone is more durable than the old ones.

anyone got a link to a 960x640 jet black background ala iphoneEDGE/iphone3G/iphone3GS before 4.0 came and gave wallpapers on the app screen? i would like my black background back please, at least for right now...

Does the official Apple skin provide much protection? Putting the iPhone 4 in a thick bulky ugly case kind of ruins it.

on the bright side you have an apple store near you apparently.

I don't, i have to ship away.

Hopefully these bugs are worked out before whitey.

lol for those who have a 3gs

grab your phone and put it between both hands and it drops your bars down to searching just like the 4.

edit: wont recreate. but it did it the first time. Someone else pointed this out with their 3gs also.
weird. My 3GS didn't go all the way to searching while wrapping my hand around it, but it does drop from 5 bars to 1, like instantly, and almost immediately goes back to 4-5 again.

It did it twice, not anymore now.

Software bug? Maybe on the 4 also. (sure hope so for you people, that phone looks daaaaayyyyyuuuuummmmmnnnnnnnnnn SEXY)

My 3GS looks like granny sex compared to it.
still a great phone especially with iOS4, but I would like to have a 4. Apple knows how to get me hyped with their stuff recently... great technology and aesthetics.

yes, it had to be 960 x 640 even though it’s pure black. think of the retinas!!!

Bummer :-\

I'm really hoping that this is an issue that can be fixed via fw update, but it totally sounds like a hardware issue.

it doesn’t cover the back glass, only the sides. if you drop it, the glass won’t bear the brunt of the impact, it’ll be the rubber ring around the thing.

there haven’t been field tests to show how well it performs or how easily the SS ring gets scratched to see if it’s worth it.

myself, I’ll be using this thing bareback once I can get it. no skins, cases, rings, bumpers, films or lockboxes.

… I may get a case that covers the seams around the sides. ONLY THE SEAMS.

Ok.

Just to see if I'm going nuts here. Turns out I did have the antenna issue. I wanted to test and see just how bad the signal dropped with data.

I was holding the phone like in the video and the bars were dropping. I realized I was on wifi and so I switched to settings. Still holding the phone on both sides and with only one bar showing, I went to go into wifi and accidentally turned on Airplane Mode.

I realized my mistake almost immediately and switched it back on. The airplane icon went away and the bars came back. Full.

I've been trying for 15 minutes to get the bars to drop again by holding the sides and I can't get it to happen again.

Can someone else with the antenna issue try and replicate this?

most people can get it once but not again. Just like me on my 3gs.

see? perfectly acceptable.

May the Lord O’Malley strike me down for such insolence

Had the antennae issue in my apt (in NJ) I walked to my buddys apt a few blocks away, it's been fine. I'm in Staten Island now and it's fine. Been holding it in my left (slightly sweaty) hand and not one bar has dropped.

Gary, I tried to tweet at you when you were showing the Twitter app, didn't make it in time. :D

Question for all, has Apple made a way to combine accounts, or move items from one account to another? When I graduated college I made a new iTunes account with my actual gmail as opposed to my school address/hotmail account and now have to log into one or the other to re-download apps or update.

Can someone tell me what the iPhone is when you sync it in the Summary screen?

Is it clearly an iPhone 4 in the picture or an iPhone 3G or 3GS?

This screen (not mine; just Googled):

Apparently the Apple Store near me already has a line of 25 or so people...

...I was planning at going at midnight which I thought was plenty crazy enough, but I'm being outcrazied?! What the fuck?!

I'm actually calling them out to see if we can get confirmation, because in all my line camping days for hyped products, I've NEVER not been within the first 10 people, and I usually get there very very early in the morning the day of...

People are saying I'm already outside of that in the afternoon the day before?!

Tell me it isn't that crazy already...

I am getting 5 bars right now no matter where my hands are. Will continue to test whether it is dropping calls on the road in places where my 3G was fine. I am sure they will iron it out in the next 2 weeks.

The speed of this thing...

FWIW I do not have the yellow spot screen issue. And I don't have the issue with signal degradation when holding the antenna band either, and I held it covering the band with my hand more than I would in normal use.

I can confirm the dropped bars issue as well. The 3G performance for me was as follows:
5 Bars
DL: 0.86 Mbps, UL: 0.73 Mbps

0-1 Bar
DL: 0.20 Mbps, UL: 0 Mbps

Edit: This doesn't impact Wi-Fi performance (I tested it too).

Depends on how remote of a location you are in. If there isn't another Apple store in sight then midnight tonight isn't too crazy

did you try cycling the airplane mode option?

can anyone with both a 3gs and iPhone 4 do some webpage loading tests over wifi. some heavy pages. scrolling tests (hoe often does the checkerboard appear on the iphone4?)

or some app loading speed tests? curious to see the differences.

Did you get a chance to try your sim in the iPad? Curious if you could just use one paid connection.
